Are all Fabia vRS's Noisy when cold?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone.

My Fabia is really noisy when it's cold (mainly at tickover) and I'm just wondering whether they're all like that?

Pretty much until they have warmed up. Diesel knock is more apparent until warm, thats why the heater plugs have a run on time to try to eliminate it.

Im sure that the PD130 Ibiza Engine Cover which Seat sell for

Its a bit of foam that sits under the cover, also fitted to the 105 bhp Octavia2 btw.

I stand corrected, it's 11.30pm and i've been up since 5am :orb_sleep

It is pretty noisy - after warmup it really goes away & I've already got it noisekillered by Steve - can still hear it very easily. the PD130 engine foam/cover thing is on order, it won't make it go away but it might help a tad.

Must admit it is a lot quieter than a diesel Golf, not sure which Mk it is, but it's a fairly newish one. You can hear that VERY loudly, and it makes the ground vibrate too :?

Just get louder ICE :D

I just tend to drive it - it's not that loud, just a lot louder than the hybrid vehicle my inlaws purchased recently :D

I have spent a fair bit on soundproofing and there is some more to come to improve it a little further. When the temperature gage is actually into say 60-70 deg C the noise starts to drop quite significantly already though.

Also I've noticed if you are very gentle it doesnt make that much racket either, but then the engine takes forever to warm up so you can't win

Taka taka taka...put put...

Hellfire but placing a jacket round the engine to reduce noise will also increase the engine temprature as well will it not ? The hotter the engine the more energy is being lost as heat = energy.

My car is noisy ALL the time - not just when it's cold. Every time I go out, like today, in my MX-5 I wonder whether going diesel was the right thing to do...

It's a bloody DIESEL ENGINE!!!!! :D

The PD130 engine is still a lot quieter than my old non-PD 110 Ibiza. Even when cold.

The only diesel engines I've heard which are quiet are the Honda 2.2 found in the Accord & the BMW 6 cylinder in the 530.

listen to an old diesel and then say it's not quiet!

Thats true, the PD100 in the Fabia is almost silent compared to the noise a 110TDi makes on cold tickover.

I'm sure my neighbours ten year old diesel transit van is quieter than my Octy in a morning. :D

Cheers

True enough compared to old diesels it's quiet - doesn't hurt trying to make it more quiet again though

Wonder why they are fitted to the Ibiza PD 130 engine as standard

Maybe they outweigh the sound proofing against heat gain

its only around the head really doubt it will increase heat that much

its only around the head really doubt it will increase heat that much

If it's only around the head then I would of though this should be fine but I doubt it would make a massive amount of difference to the noise generated then would it

My car share's got an old SDi polo - now that's noisy!

In comparison, the Furby's silent!

Compare it to a Land Rover diesel engine!!! ;)

Geeky bit....

It shouldn't increase the temperature too much..the foam used for sound proofing is open cell ie the cells (bubbles) are interconnected - this will allow the sound to be absorbed throughout the cell structure (like a bath sponge absorbing water) this open structure also allows heat / hot air to travel through/escape.

Unlike a closed cell foam, where the cells are independant bubbles and will stop the heat getting through and the engine would indeed get warmer due to the insulation effect (sound is also reflected rather than absorbed - so not much good at sound proofing)

The reason it works sound-wise also, is that the 'bad' noise comes from that location on the engine, mainly :)

My car is noisy ALL the time - not just when it's cold. Every time I go out, like today, in my MX-5 I wonder whether going diesel was the right thing to do...

To be honest, after about a month of owning mine, I wondered the same thing. When I swapped it for a 1.8 petrol hot hatch, I've never looked back, even though most of the time the diesel was quicker / more flexible. You just cant beat the sound of a petrol engine roaring away at 5000+ rpm!

Now you know why soundproofing is worth doing - the engine is not the problem, it's the road-noise caused by the low-profile tyres ;)
