20k from front tyres? Anyone?

Featured Replies

Anybody got close or over 20k from

Front tyres on a TDI VRS?

what brand did you use? My continentals that it came from the factory with are done at 12k so looking for replacements now.

What did you go with?

i've almost reached 55k on my factory fitted conti 2s.

has another few thousand left in it.

i've had the car now 2.5 yrs.

12k is too soon to b replacing tyres!!!!

But your roads are all in a straight lines, trillions of miles long and no bends. You must drive around at 30 mph :giggle:

Not a VRS. But my scout came with Bridgestone Adrenalines: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Bridgestone/Adrenalin-RE002.htm on the front. 20,000km later they aren't even half worn. I was expecting them to disappear really fast. But they won't. Which is a shame because their replacements are taking up space in my garage.

I have only driven them through summer so far. Currently got winters on.

The dunlop SP wjatevers on the front of mine have done 16k since I bought the car second hand, and they weren't brand new at the time either - I'd say they would probably last 20k in total.

They're total crap as far as gripping the road goes though and to an extent I can't wait to get them off. I considered ditching them from the start but kept finding excuses not to.

Next time I buy tyres it'll probably be back to Bridgestone potenzas which always served me well on my petrol VRS

My brother got near 40k IIRC from his fronts (original Dunlops) on his diesel vRS. He wore them much lower than I would though. I got more like 12k but that was prior to alignment adjustment.

Sarge.

12k out of bridgestones as well for me on my last one.

Contis on mine and I have just passed 26k since new last May. There is still about 3-4k left on them, however they were swapped at the 10 and 20 service so I will need to change all 4 at the same time.

A friend of mine has a DSG version of the VRS, so same car and his fronts last 12k as he uses mostly A road (quickly) while I use motorways for most of my commute.

Are we talking kilometres or miles. I got about 30'000 miles from my front tyres on my vrs diesel, they were Michelin premacys. The cars now done about 45'000 and the Backs are still going strong.

My car has now close to 100.000 km, so give it a 50-50% summer-winter... Still have the original Michellin Pilot Primacy that came with the car, but I do rotate them every year (front and rear). Still have another 3mm 'till the marker, so I reckon that they'll do for this summer too...I really recommend this tyres :)

My Octy (as signature) had Conti SC2's from the factory.

I replaced the first 2 at 30k miles - as they came off it was apparent they still had some life on them.

Switched my other 2 originals to the front which are now on 36k and if I had to take a punt - I'm gonna see 45k on them.

It was one of the reason that when I bought two new ones I went for some SC5's - feel the brand is serving me well.

It would be nice to have actually had a set of tyres on the car long enough to find out, as so far in the last 3 years I've had to prematurely swap out 5 of the bloody things due variously to bad alignment, 2 potholes and one knackered sidewall from clipping the kerb! :(

My CR vRS DSG had Conti SC2 on from new (June 2012) and I am at about 9,000 miles and I checked the depth on them the other day and they are a shade under 3mm, which seems pretty crap, I could understand if I ragged it all the time but I dont, its due its first service in the next few weeks so I will ask the dealer to swap back to front as the rears are almost new still, that should give me another 12 months at least, I presume that is Ok to do??

I could probably get 20k from fronts but they'd be pretty shot by then and borderline legally.

I've been getting about 17k.

[edit just noticed you're talking about derv]

I believe the factory-fit tyres have less tread on them than the ones you buy as replacements.

FWIW my original Conti SC's are approaching 17K and look like they may last to 20k, but of course I am not VRs I am a mere TDI. I did rotate them front to back at 10k just to horrify the VBH devotees.

I only got 15K out of the factory Conti's, I got 18K out of some Falken 914's. All in all 20K in my eyes is good for CR VRS.

That sounds totally wrong, sorry

Similar results on the same tyres - Primacy HP.

Not sure about this, but I did get the least distance on the factory Conti's one the work car. Every set since has done around 1/4 more, but struggles to reach 15 K.

Managed about 16k on my Conti SC2s with a TSI VRS. A friendly tyre fitter once told me that its the type of mileage thats important - lots of acceleration, cornering and deceleration (i.e. in town/City driving) will result in a much higher wear rate per mile than motorway driving. Common sense really, but would explain the large range of results on here (55K to about 12K for TSI VRS).

You and me both!! I have one of the originals left on mine, but it's on the front and not quite down to the marker at 31k

Barum Bravuris fronts - 17K - may have to replace soon

The rear tyres are hardly worn.

They are great tyres, seem to have a soft tyre handling, but worked in the snow.

Barum Bravuris on my VRS until recently - surprisingly decent for a budget tyre and lasted around 12k miles which I thought was pretty decent considering getting to grips with not planting the right foot everywhere! Have now swapped for the supposed holy grail of motoring, Goodyear Eagle 2s, which just seem far grippier but will no doubt wear away by the winter as the potholed roads kill the softer compound. But hey - I'm enjoying the driving for the moment (poxy radio issue aside) and since the Octavia is a heavy car, anything over 10k miles is probably good going and simply something to factor into running costs regardless of what spec you run.

I bought my car second hand with 16,000km and still the OEM set of Bridgestone Turanza and they still have lot of life... unfortunately.

I'm not too convinced by their grip or maybe I'm just rationalizing my wish to get rid of that utterly ridiculous, fake "Italian wannabe" name. Even if they were the best tyres available, it'd be hard to ask for them to the tyre fitter without bursting in laugh or turning red (depending on one's sense of humour).

I used to know Michelin's as the best compromise between grip and durability.

Yawn,

Got about 44,000 miles on origional "Turenzas", proper poor in the snow btw.

But still a bit of life in them.

Mixed and matched at random round all four corners.
