To lower or not to lower, that is the question

Featured Replies

My wife works at a garage and can get me some eibach springs fitted for £150, I know it will change the look but I only have an elegance so will it be enough?

Your thoughts and opinions if you have them or have had that setup please

If it's a daily family hack don't bother. You will regret it forever more and a day... Simples.

Don't lower, my lad has a lowered Lupo, I would rather walk, the ride is dreadful! Too harsh and bangs through bumps, did I mention he has to drive miles to avoid speed bumps lol.

It's only 30mm and my car being an elegance is quite high and quite firm already I thought. Would be handy to go out in one to see what it is like

Only 30mm eh? Tbh the octavia rear springs are already far to hard on the back anyway as standard, all you will do is make it even more choppy.

Can't say I've had an issue with the rear.

Does anyone have their own experience of the setup I am thinking of please as first hand would be good as all cars are different

If yours is an Elegance, it may have sports suspension anyway - mine did.

I wouldn't bother. Pointless IMO.

Rear seats in the elegance are just about ok - hell isn't that 90% of taxis ?

Rear seats in a VRS are a PITA (literally) for adults with normal posteriors.

In my VRS going from 18's to 17's in wheel size has improved the ride no end, without loosing cornering, so it is fathomable that you will get a firmer ride, less roll ... but I don't think you will have the juice to do anything with it. Howevr it may well feel more fun and sprightly, and if that's a fitted cost... I would! Especially if they unfit for same money :)

I wouldn't have it lowered at all. It's hard and unsightly (not judging - it's just that I don't find it æsthetically pleasing).

My Ambiente estate has been lowered on Eibach springs and I'd say do it.

30mm drop over standard, much better handling & driving and very little difference in ride quality. SWMBO & kids never noticed!

I think it looks much better without being stupidly lowered. Only 15mm lower than the Vrs, so not ridiculous.

For £150 you'd be a fool not to. I paid £120 for the springs and I can't remember how much for fitting (probably about the same or more).

Only disadvantages I've come up with are increased insurance premium and having to be more careful over speed bumps ( the narrow ones in the middle of roads, not the full width ones) and if driving on rutted tracks.

Do it, the ride on Eibachs is very good - as KB points out his family didn't realise the set up had changed. I also found that the car was much better on Eibach springs when fully loaded too. £150 fitted is a very good price but make sure you get your alignment done too.

Thanks kb, exactly what I wanted to hear. My wife had them on her old gt tdi and they were great.

Where she works, they have been offered the springs cheap so like you say it would be rude not to.

Will give the insurance co a call and see what difference it would make. I think lowering the car helps the overall look and to be fair the current springs are pretty stiff so I'm sure I won't notice a huge amount other than the look and maybe fuel consumption?

Mine is lowered 30mm..Its now miles better in terms of ride and road holding..Take a look:

Looks great, not too low at all. Mine will stuff have a gap above the arch, but no where near what I have now. Will call the insurance company first, if they ask silly money then that will put an end to my thoughts

Id look at lowering it on a set of second hand vRS suspension. Best of both worlds then. Still tres comfy, still OEM quality but also lower and better to look at.

Id bet someone on here would be up for selling some to free up some cash.

Cars springs lower it about 15mm over standard and still counts as 'modified'.

The OE approved lowering springs are Eibachs.

These lower it 30mm over standard.

Both involve a rise in insurance premium (unless you have a very nice insurance company).

Go for the new Eibachs over use Vrs springs IMO.

I would mate, not fussed about OEM as I know how good Eibachs are. Spoke to direct line, they want £24.38 for 2 months which includes a £15.90 admin fee. I'll get them bought and do it for the new policy so I don't incur the admin charge, best way to sell it to swmbo

That's what I did as well. Waited until renewal then no extra fees.

IIRC it was about £40 extra for the year but that included ICE changes as well.

That's better than mine. I work it out to be £60 a year basing on what they quoted me today. I would check around though, but at least I know the worst case

Thanks again for your replies, always good to hear from someone with first hand experience

Only thing is doing springs alone will end up too bouncy, it did for me after a while and you will end up needing/wanting uprated dampers lol.

Octavia Greenline advertises a 15mm drop - is this the same as VRS factory spec? Can't see 'Greenline' spec springs for sale.
