  • Well after a really early start this morning I have sold my Golf to a guy from Dartford, he has big plans for more power, a roll cage and getting it road legal again, I agreed to deliver it for some b

  • 2015 is now here, the next chapter in the life of the Golf is about to begin!  After the low boost set up in 2014, I am happy to run that in 2015 whilst I go collecting parts again, the plan is 450 bh

  • Just spoken to Wayne and paid him, he has squeezed 280.6bhp at 6450rpm and 274 lb/ft torque at 4300rpm with 6psi boost, so I am quite happy with these figures, from a stock block and piston, he has al

Nope, scales are spot on I believe the Golf is a heat beast.

James mine went on a weight bridge today weighed 1500kg with a full tank of fuel, so I'd say your at least 70kg down on standard which is good going already

Decompression plate has arrived, thanks to United Motorsport, I will be collecting this on Monday from Hook (where ever that is??) and then it will be a case of pulling the head of it (Golf) to get the party started.

hook is hampshire?

  • Author

somewhere down south yes, I have a postcode so should be ok.

I will go on Monday, down the M40 and get there for 9 AM, then have to collect somebody from Stansted at 11AM, looking on Google Map I should make Stansted in an hour and a bit from Hook, so all working out nicely, then to Leeds from Stansted and then back to St Helens.

Monday will be a long day.

smile.png OOH!  Look what I got today, decompression spacer, things are progressing now, just injectors now and the spanners will get an outing too.

Thanks to United Motorsports for arranging this for me and The Phirm, nice talking to those guys this morning.

Good stuff, how thick is it? Be interesting to see how you get on fitting it.

  • Author

it is about 2mm, drops the comp to 9 to 1 apparently the thickness is governed by the timing chain length.

That's correct, I ran a 4mm one, but took a bit of work to make it fit yo

A little  more weight reduction this afternoon, rear wiper and motor removal, door card and electric window removal too, I estimate at least 10 kilos removed, some of which has been recycled into the Lupo, tweeters and speakers have been listed as Lupo bits now.

I will do the other door tomorrow, also the door can still open via a pull cord like an old Mini.

 Rear window looks good too.

Looks great I'm glad the bora doesn't have one prefer the smooth rear end look, have you fitted manual winders in the back then?

  • Author

No winders at all! I have a piece of plastic conduit pipe with a groove cut in the top for the glass and it wedges in to keep the window shut!

This will be modified to something that allows me to open the rear windows a little when at the track.

Fronts I am looking for winders but the amount of weight it will save I might just keep the fronts in.

Is this not turboed yet? What's the hold up?

  • Author

The hold up is a MK II GTi sitting in the garage being finished off first, it has had a turbo make over along with everything else! I mean everything, nut and bolt restoration, the guy has owned the car from new and when it looked tired he has made it new again.

My turbo project will start in the new year now but this isn't too much of an issue as I can get in one or two more track days before we start and this is part and parcel when you are getting mates to help for very low rates, usually takes a bit longer.

How's things going with this James?

  • Author

Nothing has happened yet Si, I am waiting for the new year as my mechanic is overwhelmed with work, I too will be changing my job in the new year so have decided to put things on hold with the mods.

I am doing a few more track days though whilst I wait.

A little progress today, a new steering wheel, boss and airbag delete resistor fitted, not too sure about the wheel through it is quite thin, see how it goes though and decide later, plus side is I now have a decent boss.

Had a little trip out today (440 mile round trip!) in the Yeti to collect some goodies for the Golf, thanks to CNTuning, I now have some Brembo's   next weekend I will be fitting these along with some braided brake lines from HEL performance and some new fluid. Should have no problem stopping in the future. Also have the discs and Ferodo DS3000 pads.

DS3000's lol. Proper mans pads :)

DS3000's lol. Proper mans pads :)

I hear, they scare the hell out of you when cold on the road   but are excellent when hot

I had 2500's on the standard brake set up and they were really good.  Looking forward to seeing how these perform, might even do the 280mm rear upgrade too.

Yeah loved my ds2500s. Will have to get another set.

But yeah remember to warm them up :)

I don't think there will be a problem getting them hot  ;)

Started to have a clean up of the Brembo's tonight, I used isopropyl alcohol but the black stuff was a bit reluctant to leave, so I had a go with some MEK, that shifted it, kept it away from the rubbers.

I also removed the carriers and de rusted them with a wire brush on the drill, then applied some paint to make them look a bit better, at this stage I am not going to paint the callipers, just get them on and ready for February 21st track day, then when the bit of pad that is left is reduced I will replace the pads and get the callipers made to look pretty!
