I have been to the weighbridge today, now you have to picture my car, it has no interior except dash and door cards, it has bucket seats and harnesses, I also have me at slender 13 stone and 1/4 of a tank of fuel.

Step onto the scales 4 motion...........................

1480kg     to say she blushed would be an understatement  BUT I find this a bit hard to believe as all the info I can find on the internet about kerb weight suggests 1401-1420 kg and I have removed plenty of unwanted bits that were quite heavy when I lifted them out  unsure.png   might have to have a second weigh in I think.ohmy.png

  • Well after a really early start this morning I have sold my Golf to a guy from Dartford, he has big plans for more power, a roll cage and getting it road legal again, I agreed to deliver it for some b

  • 2015 is now here, the next chapter in the life of the Golf is about to begin!  After the low boost set up in 2014, I am happy to run that in 2015 whilst I go collecting parts again, the plan is 450 bh

  • Just spoken to Wayne and paid him, he has squeezed 280.6bhp at 6450rpm and 274 lb/ft torque at 4300rpm with 6psi boost, so I am quite happy with these figures, from a stock block and piston, he has al

How much fuel did you have in, I'm suprised it's that heavy

  • Author

1/4 of a tank, I am well shocked at how heavy it is, must be something wrong somewhere,

That's light! Can't get mine below 1650kg! And to think it did a 12.52 last year! Still managing a 13.1 this year with the 2.0 in it.

Not much you can do about the weight really, the body is heavy so is all the drivetrain, that's what makes it a quality vag product!

quality VAG product = Heavy

Now the Golf is on the Atkins diet, I am hoping to loose another 150 kg at least, this will be from the electric window motors and side impact bars, also the rear wiper motor, Air con will also be chopped as the compressor is a fatty and the condenser removal will make way for my FMIC, radio and other bits of internal tat will also be chopped, I noticed I still have the front inertia seatbelts in so they can come out too.

Target is 1200 kilo ultimately, I will also go on a get fit diet to shed some weight too.

1200! No chance man! You will need to remove the doors and boot to get that! Plastic windows will help too, glass is heavy. Wing mirrors are heavy, just about everything on a golf is heavy! So disc changer will have to go!

Get scraping all that horrible sound deadening out. Any interior plastics, basically anything you don't need :)

Disc changer has gone.

Really though, electric window motors have to be a few kilos each, four of them, the side impact bars are at least a kilo each, rear wiper motor also a kilo maybe. Then the A/C pump and pipe work etc, maybe your right, but no harm in aiming at 1200 as a target weight.

I will inflate the tyres with helium too     then you have that short runner of yours, that will ad 10 kilos at least  :giggle:

It is gone Si, every last bit horrid job, sticky and messy, I will have another rummage about to tomorrow to see what else can be removed.

Indeed take the carpet up there's great wads of insulation I used to to remove the stuff from the rear in my octys weighed 5kg at least, air con removal and secondary air pump should get around 25kg if not more, I bet my bora is heavier then a golf then too :(

1457kg kerb weight for mine apparently, ill be down on the weight bridge in a few weeks to get rid of some scrap so will see what mine is for a laugh

Was that including you in the 1480?

  • Author

yes Trev, what are you saying?  :wonder:  :wonder:    I am a racing snake mate

  • Author

ME = 89 kilo

So that makes the car 1391 kilos

Average blokes gotta be 80kg so that will take you under 1400 :)

Beat me too it

  • Author

meet Mr Average

Exhaust you running? Standards weigh a flipping ton lol

Exhaust you running? Standards weigh a flipping ton lol

Yep my milltek was loads lighter plus minus the middle box :)

  • Author

at this moment in time I have a standard exhaust on there too, so going on what you have just said, when I remove it the car will weigh 400kg      sorry couldn't resist that one.

Yep, a standard system, this will be replaced with a 3" custom made system when the turbo goes on, quick swap CAT too

Just make more power, sod the weight!

I bet the sound deadening will weight quite a bit as well!!

It was quite heavy, just the tar patches were approx 5 kilos from all foot wells, seats were the biggest loss, they were really heavy.

I assume you'll be leaving the side crash bars in the front doors?

  • Author

No Richard, they will be out too but when I do remove the front crash bars a roll cage will be added which is bad because it adds weight.

With regard to crash bars, Caterham or Westfield do not have crash bars or crumple zones, does the Golf really need them?

For the kilo it would save by removing them from the front doors I guess they are not doing any harm really and could have a stay of execution.

Peugout 205's don't have much crash protection, I still drive one of them with 235bhp occasionally at 120mph! People ride motorbikes too...
