Anyone tested the Citysafe option?

Featured Replies

I'm bloody annoyed! I was bigging up the Citysafe system to my dad this afternoon. Rolled up to an empty tall wheelie bin at 10 mph and guess what? One dead wheelie bin. Obviously I'm off to the dealers with it but they say that these safety systems are worth their money the first time that you need it. I'm glad I tested it as it wouldn't have saved me from a 'proper' crash. :@

yep, if you do a search one of the member did a good test and posted the vids as well

Don't think the Wheelie bin will be covered by the Skoda Warranty, ring the Council.

Joking apart , Hope you get it sorted. Wonder what would have happened if it was a real life situation and the system had failed then.

Think it was Davie aka sharkrider and his better half Ash that tested it.

Did you touch the steering wheel at all?

Dealer will do nothing except check fault codes, they can't physically test the system much in the same way they can't blow up an airbag to see if it works.

Sorry to say testing a safety system in this manner seems pretty brain dead to me. I've done it on a training course and it does work but there are a lot of criteria that has to be met. Deliberately driving into something without touching the brakes is quite difficult to do, I had to be blind folded before I could stop myself moving something instinctively.

The bin won't sue either, I shut its lid good and proper......... :giggle:

What difference does this make? This is supposed to help prevent a collision in stop-start driving conditions. I generally would have my hands on the wheel. To the best of my knowledge there are no 'touch' sensors in the steering wheel to ascertain wether I am holding it or not.

tested it loads... :) here we are :)

Air bags are a 'one time only' item. This is not, of course it can be tested. Simply drive at an object and see if it hits it...simple really.

It works with clutch up or down, in or out of gear... only time it wont is if you are on full throttle...... (or going too fast) remember its supposed to work aginst cars NOT wheely bins ;) however, our tests proved it works with people...... you can turn it off with the button, but it should reset when restarted.....

to be honest a wheely bin may be a bit "short"

The car is an ASG and was doing no more than 5 mph. The height of the object should have been sufficient, I think.

less than 5 mph doesnt work....... drive at it faster :)

Seriously? That sounds scary and this is the wifes' car!! I'll have chat with the bin and see if it's up for it!

I'm glad yours works, after watching your videos of testing it!!

Pressing the clutch, accelerator or moving the steering wheel will cancel the intervention.

If you are travelling at less than 3MPH or more than 19MPH the system is inactive.

If you have too much steering lock, the system is inactive (it can't look around corners).

Where was the bin when you started?

IIRC, if the bin doesn't cross the detection line 10m ahead of the car, the system does not intervene. The system is not sensitive to objects crossing from the side at a distance of less than 10m.

Just looked in the manual. It says it should work between 3 and 19 mph, but to be honest I may have been going at less than this. I certainly wasn't doing walking speed, which I usually estimate to be 4mph (it is with my legs, anyway). Looks like you may have a point!!

All very good points  but just to clarify, this was a test. The purpose was to hit the object and see if the system intervened. I drove straight at the object which was 20 metres in front and was 'dead ahead'. Thinking back, I now concede I was going a bit too slow for the system to do its stuff, so my test is flawed, but all other criteria I believe were met. I suppose based on my test description i.e. to hit the object you could say it was a success!! :giggle:

The other thing that is poorly explained is stopping distance...

Even though the system is active up to 19MPH, if you are travelling at more than 12.5MPH (20km/h), the system will brake but you will hit the object - and that's with new tyres/brakes on dry tarmac.

i.e. If your stopping distance is greater than 10m you will hit the object (at a much reduced speed).

So if you repeat your test, don't go too fast :)

It also won't work with any steering input as the system assumes you are taking avoiding action.

Edit, as already stated.

Dealers are also instructed not to physically test or demonstrate the system. As pointed out its a damage limitation system, not always a damage avoidance. Also make sure your screen is kept clean around the sensor.

Fair point, it would look bad if they went too fast/ too slow and damaged a car!!

Still not stopped me from being curious to know if it works, but my enthusiasm has been somewhat tempered by the tight constraints on when it will be fully successful (my description only!) and prevent contact.

Also, I would like to point out that the bin made a full recovery (I stood it up again) and is now taking **** from its owner as well as it always did!

As tests go, your's was RUBBISH!

Wa-hey! i'll get my coat....

I tested mine near the top of the speed range and left a nice pair of skidmarks on the depot floor. :)

Worked fine.

Mine has kicked in twice once when something was turning left off the main road which it must has registered. Made me jump out of my skin.

So yes it works.

  • 4 weeks later...

I just tried our Citysafe and worked like a dream. Did not do the wheelie bin test but got my kids to stand each side holding up a blanket at around 4/5 ft.
