Jim Clark's Border Reivers D-Type

Featured Replies

Was lucky enough to spot TKF 9 on a visit to Duns (where I live) yesterday. It was in the area for a photo-shoot for one of the classic car mags (not saying which one, was asked not to by the snapper). Legged back home for the camera & got a few shots of it with Ian Scott Watson in attendance, outside the Jim Clark Room, here in the village.

I last saw the car in 1993 when it was here for the re-opening of the room after refurbishment, a great weekend, lots of big names from Ford & Sir Jackie Stewart who was most obliging when it came to signing books & setting the stage for photos. Brilliant.

A rare opportunity to see such a valuable & iconic car, no silencers & it sounded magnificent.

Hope you enjoy the shot.

Cheers.

Interesting that there has been several motorsport legends fromt the Borders ie Steve Hislop and Colin McRae for such a sparsely populated area.

Not sparsely populated by Farmers, Engineers, Mechanics, Moneyed People, Fathers/families that are talented/involved in Motorsports,

then great Motorsport Cubs, Events, Members & very good back roads.

( A great current and not widely recognised driver from near the Borders is David Bogie.)

McRae was not from the Border.

Ian Hislop, Jim Clark, Andrew Cowan, Doug Niven, Louise Aitken Walker all were and the last 4 were all local to Duns. Success breeds success.

Ahh Colin was from Lanark, lived (and died) in the Borders, God rest his soul, and and excuse to show a picture.....

Wrong again i'm afraid. He was from Lanark, lived not far from Lanark and died not far from his home. I would love to claim him as a Borderer but sadly cannot.

You are correct, apologies to a Legend.

Now he did live and died in the Borders

I'm not from Scotland but I have driven a D-Type.

Jim Clark has been voted Britain's greatest ever racing driver by readers of The Sunday Times - it was his death that made Jackie Stewart realize just how dangerous motor racing at that time was - at the Hockenheimring where he tragically died there were no barriers (his car came off the track and hit trees). The likely cause of the accident was apparently a deflating tyre - quite topical given today's events at Silverstone.

I've never been in the Motorsport section before - only wandered in by accident - fat thumbs on the iPad :o .

Have you ever been to rural Lanarkshire or the eastern Borders? If you had, it would suddenly become very  clear.

Eff all else to do?

That and seriously testing roads. This from someone who remembers when the A82 up Loch Lomond was like it presently is from Tarbet to Sloy Power Station all the way from Balloch up to Glen Falloch.

I remember it as well - much more interesting drive than it is now - one of my earliest memories (1973 or 1974) is going from Glasgow to Minard (on Loch Fyne) in my grandfather's Triumph Vitesse (he was driving though!).

The road from Moffat to Selkirk is a fantastic twisty drive.

Jim Clark Memorial Rally uses a lot of those superbly challenging roads each year. Including one stage (used most years?) that goes right past Jim Clark's farm near Chirnside. Brilliant stages. My favourites: Bothwell / Moon & Stars.

Have several more shots taken the same day, was a bit grey & showery, so quality not the best. If anyone wants copies, email me at [email protected] & I'll shoot some over to you.

Altho the Jim Clark is one of the best rallies in the country, even as a Dinger, it pains me to say that the Mull Rally is even better! I was up there for the first time on Radio duties last year.......what an event. For those who have never been, make a date in your diary for mid-October. If you want to use the Oban-Craignure ferry, you'll have to book well ahead, but the Corran ferry & Lochaline to Fishnish are turn up & take your turn in the queue. It's well worth the trip, believe me. Fantastic roads, scenery & hospitality make it worthwhile.

Cheers,

thedinger
