All you really need is a nice Windows PC with Windows Media Player to sort out your album art and you can get more albums than you can shake a stick at on a 32GB SDHC card for £20, or you can go up to 128GB SDXC if necessary, and no trailing wires! BTW, I may be wrong but as far as I am aware, Amundsen does not play video, you would need Columbus for that, there is a comparison at the back of the brochure and video formats are greyed out for Bolero and Amundsen.

To fully control your iPhone you need the Mitsumi connection. There's been a lot of discussion here about bluetoothing music, using SD cards etc as if the Mitsumi connection was an expensive extra. It's £100. You can perform all tasks from the multimedia, skipping tracks, repeat tracks etc and yes, it does display album art. Simple plug and play. It will recharge your iPhone as well. Bluetooth + only enhances the phone signal.

Do you recommend getting the Mitsumi connection rather than using Bluetooth/Bluetooth+  to connect the  iPhone/iPad  to the New Octavia Elegance Estate?  My worry is losing both 'Aux' and 'USB' ports which may be required in future (although I am presently an Apple user through and through).  For instance, my son has a Galaxy.  But I suppose he could connect via Bluetooth (or Bluetooth+ if you recommend it).  I use Spotify for music, rather than iTunes or a memory card, which allows up to 3,333 tracks at a time downloaded onto a media device.    When I did a test drive on the test model (Elegance with reg Bluetooth, USB & Aux ports) , I had to connect my iPhone via Bluetooth.  I had to select tracks via the iPhone as the list did not show up on the screen.  Once I was playing a saved album on Spotify, the name of the track & artist showed up (crude, B/W no graphics) and I was able to skip tracks.   If I specify the Mitsumi connection, will I be able to view / control all the Spotify tunes that are stored my iPhone on the Amudsen screen?  Does the media for the track or album show up?  (I do not plan to purchase the Columbus option).  Any other words of advice of what is essential to order and what is a waste of money?  for instance, are the Canton speakers worth the extra cost?  The sound system that comes with the Elegance seem good - but is the Canton absolutely amazing as in '£900 extra amazing"???

I'm using the Mistumi with my iPhone 4. It's brilliant and can't understand why anyone with an iPod / iPhone wouldn't spec it rather than faff around with Bluetooth (less functionality) or waste time putting the music already on an iPod /iPhone onto SD cards. Barking mad IMO. The fact that it recharges it as well is a bonus.

Pros:

Works with current iphone/ipod and in comparison to bluetooth streaming it offers ability to show album art.

Cons:

You loose USB.

You loose aux in.

Requires extra cable.

Considering six years ago iphones did not even exist, six years from now it might as useful to anyone as a six years old O2 rSAP bluetooth or nokia cradle hard wired on passenger side is now.

Going by experience - previous MDI dedicated i-device support was a PITA. Terrible connectors, terrible placement for someone who drives alone. With ipod/iphone it would only repeat in a loop within the same album/playlist and never move on to the next one on the list. Did not understand gapless albums. Plus it kept eating start of every song to read duration.

You can get a USB adapter to plug into the matsumi ami connection to give you the USB port back if you wish.

The Mitsumi is allegedly the same as the MDI fitted in my Fabia's. As such you can get both an Apple adapter or USB as Ollybroad says.

I didn't realise that the Bluetooth + system removed the USB and Aux in ports :-(

So does that cable mean I can retro fit an iPhone connection to the Octavia Elegance I've ordered??

Sorry what, who has said USB & aux is lost with Bluetooth+. It better bloody not be.

It doesn't. Don't get confused, Bluetooth + is an option that boosts the phone signal ONLY, any mobile phone. The compartment forward of the gearlever has a false floor under which is an induction loop boosting the signal by connecting electronically to an aerial built in to the windscreen. Not only does this boost signal strength but it also helps preserve battery life.  You retain the standard USB and aux in ports with Bluetooth +. The Mitsumi connection is a completely different option which replaces the USB and aux ports to enable full functionality of an Apple device through the Bolero / Amudsen / Columbus touch screen. This does nothing for the phone signal which connects through Bluetooth as standard.

Do you know if the wee sliding door needs to be closed on the BT+ for it to work.

I'm hoping to charge my phone using the USB slot and have it in the BT+ box

I don't have Bluetooth + but as the loop is under the compartment floor I wouldn't have thought having the lid open or closed would make any difference. This is only my guess though.

I have the Bluetooth+ No I don't think you need to shut the door -there is a tiny little LED light in the compartment that I assume goes out when you close the lid. The Bluetooth call quality in the Ocatvia is miles better than anything I have used before.

The Mitsumi interface just adds iPod dock like functionality to the stereo, which like the MDI interface before it is going to be subject to compatibility issues down the line if Apple decide to change things like when they changed over to the 'Lightening Connector' also it means that you need to have a cable hanging out of the center console all the time. At least with the old MDI it was hidden away somewhere. If you can't live without your Apple device then I say go for it, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

I once purchased an Alpine unit with iPhone integration, complete disaster in the end. The problem is that the iPhone/smart phone technology is moving so quickly and integration relies on them not changing the API's (the commands the radio uses to talk to the phone) - which of course apple being apple, they do. I've head of similar stories as well, and it all makes sense - manufactures of these things don't really care for firmware updates to fix it, they'd rather you had to buy a new bit of hardware.

In my example they changed the charging pin's between iphone versions which rendered the entire stereo useless for charging.

The flexibility of an Aux IN is something I would want to keep (personally) should the Mitsumi suddenly become not compatible after a software update (thinking of the upcoming IOS 7 update)

I would be happy to stream over bluetooth and i'm thinking of going for a Ambudsen - but are people saying BT streaming doesnt work? - I also use spotify not the default apple music player - I very much doubt Mitsumi supports that but I'm going to have a google and check.

My argument isn't the £100 - it's the fact you lose the aux in!

Don't know if it would work with the Mitsumi, but I bought a cable for the MDI in my Fabia that had a 3.5mm stereo jack on the end - which worked perfectly as a aux in.

Waiting for the first person with Bluetooth+ to confirm for certain what it gives you above enhanced signal. The official Skoda video talks about giving more control of your phone but doesn't go into detail.

The Octy Elegance I've ordered neither has the BT+ nor the Mitsumi. I'm assuming I can make voice control calls with my iPhone via Bluetooth. I know the reception won't be as good as with BT+ but I'm hoping it'll be usable and an improvement on using the loudspeaker on my phone as I do now.

Music - is it right that I can listen to music via Bluetooth but can only select tracks on phone rather than through the Amunsden screen? I suppose I could also listen to music as I do in my current Octy via the aux connection.

Charging - can I charge my phone via a normal iPhone lead plugged into the USB? I hope so, being able to charge my phone whilst on the move will be a huge bonus.

It's all very confusing.

I haven't found that it does anything for functionality other than improve the signal, which it does do noticeably. If it does add more features, I'd be curious to find out what it is supposed to do.

I can confirm that you can listen to your music via BT with good clarity, only issue is that you have limited control via the car; most has to be done via the phone

The normal USB socket charges the phone no problem

Voice control of the phone and contacts works OK for a voice activated system ;)

I did enquire about retrofitting the Mitsumi, and I will receive a price shortly; however whilst I was at the dealers having the rear light cluster re-fitted as it had become loose; I found somebody placed a new Mitsumi cable in the glove box and the service guy said to me you may want to remove the panel under the multimedia unit and have a play??? I will be investigating at the weekend.

Now that is very interesting! I can just imagine that Skoda would put a Mitsumi in every car under the multimedia box then have an extension to the box by the gearstick giving USB/aux!

I so hope its not true as I've just paid 100 quid for an extension lead if it is! Lol

That's very interesting can you please keep us updated on that, I haven't ordered the Mitsumi so that would be a real bonus!

Am very interested how you get on with this! Also can the Mitsumi lead be purchased separately or is it a universal connection so another lead could be used?

just used the bluetooth for music 'by mistake' and it is absolutely fine.

the only thing I would want to do that I cant do is to change albums, but that is not a big issue for me.

Would be interested about the findings of the cable etc

@ wantsaskoda - can you change tracks on the car screen through Bluetooth without having to do it on phone screen?
