To buy or not to buy.. VRS

Featured Replies

I like the return to the more angular. Not overly chuffed with the halfords exhaust or the spoiler or the lack of LSD apparently.

Anyhoo, being chuffed to bits with my LE - which has a nice value retention... because it's a wonderful car... which only cost 17k

The similar spec III will cost me 50% more at 25k with a likely 8k part exchange - what do I have? A car which in 9 months will probably be on the 20% off deal + normal dealer discounts...

So - is the new car any better? (I don't like the idea of brakes braking on corners... that's just weird)

Skoda has over the past 2 cars and 7 years delighted & surprised me... but I hear to calling of full electric and kia...

WWYD ?

I think I'll wait and see what the new Scout looks like!

Sarge.

I quite like the idea of the extra 20 ish bhp in a lighter body the petrol now offers and with supposed official mpg figures of 40 odd to the galleon I may set sail in that direction next time. However I'm not paying all those soverins for one so I'll be keeping my powder dry me hearties until the inevitable happens and they knock a chunk off

I have been thinking about a vRS but not so sure now as I don't think it is as good a value for money product as it was. May jump ship to Seat as the Leon is looking better value at the moment.

If the scout is anything like an RS4... that would be good

I'm not sure how u could compare lol

I agree, that would be a bit like comparing a Golf with an Octavia. The Leon is the only true like for like with the Golf as the Octavia now has more room than a Passat.

Why would you think the braking of the inside wheels is weird? That's exactly what a differential does anyway and everybody loves them for it. Obviously, a purely electronic system won't be as good as a proper mechanical one, but do remember that the GTI PP was only 8 seconds faster than a base GTI over a very long Nurburgring lap (which takes more than 8 minutes for that car). That's a difference of about 1.25-1.5%. As a regular daily driven car, are you sure you're really gonna miss/notice that?

I would take it if it were available, but you shouldn't worry if it isn't. :)

How so? The only thing stopping me from being interested in the 4x4 or scout was the lack of a proper engine. The RS4 has a proper engine and is 4 wheel drive.... There is of course an Alltrack passat but that still only sports limited horses.

So what would the nearest thing be to a decently powerful scout, if not an RS4 ?

A lsd is nothing like braking the inside wheels. For one, you don't eat brake disks.

Surely coming off a left hander into a short straight into a chicane would give you massively variable braking - as when you brake sharply on the short straight the right hand brakes would bite better as much cooler and then the chicane would give you variable feedback on the left and right pegs. Or have I misunderstood the severity of the braking applied? - I don't mind active ABS controlled braking for skid control; but cornering should be taken care of with diff and suspension imho.

RS4 is in a totally different league. It would be like me saying my Yeti is a Golf R beater! ;)

It's nearer to the VW all track as it doesn't use Quattro like the RS4. Every element of the RS4 would be more performance orientated, not just the engine. :)

I'd be off to the Seat dealer to talk about an Leon FR which I thought looked rather tasty at Goodwood - especially in red.

A different league yes - that's why I would want Skoda to make something like it ! :) I still stand by: "If the scout is anything like an RS4... that would be good " - I would like a performance 4x4 Skoda.

Alternatively, your probably looking at a 2 yr old A4 or A6 Allroad for new Scout money, when it eventually arrives!

At least with the Leon FR you actually get Colour Maxidot & cruise as std.

I have been waiting for a local dealer to get the 1.8 TSi version in & got a call on 10th July that they have one, a decent test drive & make a decision.

I like the look of the new car, but do wish the PP was available as the Golf. I won't be buying one anytime soon, but if my current VRS starts costing me money in the next year (out of warranty in Sept) then I guess I will be tempted.

Is that the glovebox or boot? ;-)

It is not even the right car!!!! The Leon has a 380litre boot

I'd wait six to twelve months for the new range to calm down and see what's introduced that may take your fancy.

In the meantime, be smug you haven't fell for the "oh, new car, got to have it here's my bank details" marketing. :)

If you are lucky, you may miss out on any issues too, so you get a car when some of the bugs have been ironed out.

I had a company car on a 4 year lease that expired on 3rd July - and took delivery of the Octavia on 5th July. So that is very good timing, or very bad timing, depending on how you look at it...

is the leon FR only 180bhp?

I think the leon cupra might be the sweet spot, now they have a better looking dash this time round.

Me too, my lease car went back on 31st May, new Octy III was collected on 1st June, having opted out of company car scheme, I was also assured by the dealer that if there had been any delays, they would have loaned me a demonstrator. As for bugs, I've had one but that was fixed on a single while I waited visit, while I used free wifi and drank their complimentary unlimited coffee! I also keep banging on about the deal I got which equated to over 16% total discount, ok yes, I missed out on front assist, but I did get chrome window trim, so all in all, I'm very happy, and we also have SWMBOs TSi on the drive for when I need a high revving petrol blast!
