Shell 'Fuel save' didnt save me anything!

I have a Octavia FL 1.6 TDI CR its now 18 months old,

 

So i like to monitor my fuel consumption, i reset the '2' avergae MPG on the maxi dot and also the distance via the little push button ever time i fill up. 

 

I fill up 30 quid from 1/4 of a tank and this takes me to nearly 3/4 tank. 

 

I normally use Texco, becuase its the cheapest around here (apart form supermarket)  and i seem to get the best average MPG and distance from it ( average 56MPG and 300 miles on £30 quid)

 

BP is my next choice, seem to get pretty good return but not as great as texco and its normally more expensive. 

 

Then for the first time EVER ownng the car, i used shell fuel...£30 as normal reset each of above and i have achieved....47 MPG and 220 miles.

 

I appreciate my way of working my fuel consumption is not very scientific, types of journey, traffic, number of short runs etc etc BUT

 

surely there's something not right with the shell fuel? it didn't save me any fuel what so ever!! 

 

Any one else have any stories/finding over this?

You really need to do a brim to brim test and then over a few tanks. It takes several tanks for the engine to adapt properly to the new fuel type.

It can take more that half a tank, mixed with standard fuel to see an effect, especially with your very non scientific method.

Run it down to empty and brim it. Drive normally, then brim it again and calculate the mpg. Do a couple of tanks of premium fuel and see how you go.

Ok, ill give it a try, i did think about the remaining fuel in the tank, but didnt know that the car has to get used to a different fuel!!

Shell 'FuelSave' diesel is not some magical ingredient to add 5mpg onto your average drive. It's mostly just a convenient marketing name, despite the presence of one or two chemicals that can, theoretically, help an engine to run efficiently. But anything Shell can do, BP, Texaco and everyone else can do too, so I don't think for a minute that you'll notice any difference with Shell. But even if any one fuel was scientifically better, we're talking splitting the finest of very fine hairs.

Probably save more if you did a de-clutter, make sure the tyre pressures are correct etc etc.

 

My take on anything like this is: "We can save you ££ if you spend ££££££ with us" ;) ;)

Im pretty good on de cluttering, i check pressure every week. I like to save fuel....less money outta my pocket!

The wife on the other hand.....she sees the car as a second wardrobe/cupboard! If im away for a week my car turns in to a TK Max outlet! Full of ****.

You cannot base your mpg calculations on £££ put in, the price of fuel goes up, and down, welll mainly up! so £30 will get oyu different amounts of fuel

If you want to obtain an accurate fuel consumption figure you need to check over, at least, 150 litres.  Start with a full tank (until pump clicks out) and make the last fill-up also until the pump clicks out (ideally at the same pump as the first fill-up).  Even better keep a running total of all fuel purchased and total mileage covered and periodically calculate the mpg.  With my last car I kept records of fuel bought and mileage covered for over 72K miles and so will accept the resulting mpg as accurate.

You'll find better economy with the Vpower.

I didn't get any better mpg with my 105/1.9 PD when I put V Power in it rather than Asda's standard, but it seemed to run noticeably smoother.  But not worth the extra cost I think.

You really can't come to any meaningful conclusion from the way you gathered your data.

 

Normal £30 gives you 300 miles at 56mpg - so you used 5.36 gal or 24 litres giving a fuel price of £1.25 per litre

Shell £30 gave you 220 miles at 47mpg - so you used 4.7 gal or 21 litres giving a fuel price of £1.43 per litre

 

There is such a margin of error there that comparison really is meaningless.

The brim to brim method over at least 3 tanks full is the best way to get somewhere near - even then you will get unrelaible results if, for example, 3 tanks are cruising across Europe on holiday and the next 3 tanks are commuting through city traffic

 

BTW I am an obsessive fuel consumption measurer!  I have recorded every mile and every litre of fuel since I got my first PC in 1986 and wondered what to do with the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet I got with it!!

Over a course of 2000 miles (4 weeks driving) The first 2 weeks I filled up with Shell Fuel Saver, calculated MPG worked out at 62.6mpg.

The second 2 weeks I used the VPower Nitro, same kind of driving, same route etc. Calculated MPG jumped upto 69.2mpg.  Ontop of the extra MPG, the car felt alot smoother, response had improved and it pulled so much better.

Shell is the only fuel my car runs better with. Averaging 59mpg :)

ive just had 1.6 tdi cr se estate two days now filled it to the top and i see wot it does the garage said you get easy 50 to the gallon out of it

i had 1.2 tsi roomster that was good on petrol any think to look out for guys with the octavias thanks pete
