Columbus Maps V9

Featured Replies

I have just downloaded V9 maps from NavTeq. I see that it fully covers the whole of Europe.

I am never going to drive abroad so is it possible to delete everything but UK & Eire to save time installing and HD space?

Terry

Terry, as to HD space - one can not make use of it for anything else but maps. Except for those who are able to tweak FW files to resize partitions.

I'd look into using 32 Gb SD card for additional space.

I don't know anything about `tweaking` or `partitions`, but I have music on my Hard Drive.

Mike, are you sure you have music files on map's partition? AFAIK there are now 3 separate partitions on Columbus HDD: one for maps, one for music and another one (the 3rd) - for personal POIs.

By the way: personal POI partition on 40 Gb HDD is some 7 Gb size - IMHO an overkill...

I don't know what `map's partition` means.

I don't know what `POIs` means.

But I do have music on my Hard Drive. I put it there via an SD card in the slot.

Sorry I cant be more technical, but all this stuff is beyond me.

Regards

Mike.

Don't worry Mike you don't need to understand the techy side. Basically it means under normal conditions the drive is split into three parts of pre=determined sizes, one for maps, one for personal points of interests and one for your music.

I thought I might save space but apparently not but would it still load without Holland, France etc and if so I guess it would load quicker than the full Euromaps?

Out of interest how big is the 'music' partition?

Terry

Think of the hard drive as filing cabinet. One drawer has maps in, it the second has your music in it and the third has your Points of Interest in it you cannot use the maps drawer to store music or POI's so you only have a certain size of drawer to store each component hope this helps

The whole shebang only takes about 45 minutes to install.  Operational loading is not so slow that you get frustrated (about the same as my previous Garmin stand-alone).  I can't see any merit at all in faffing about with partial installations, personally.

The database is one big file and its encrypted, so you have to load it all. Then there is the POI database etc, they would all need editing. The system is unaffected by how much data there is, and since you gain no disk space there is little point.

Terry, if that question is aimed at me...I'm so sorry but I've no idea what a `music partition` is.

Sounds straightforward...a little!

No Mike ;)  Open question.

Looks like a full install then if it is less than an hour. Thanks.

Don't these downloads just apply to the new Columbus in the Octavia 3?

I think its only for Octavia III's...

There have been a few threads on here about it but nothing conclusive as I think anyone with an Octy II Columbus is too scared to try it.

I am and it would take years to download at 5mbps!

Partitions (or drawers...) size are as follows (AFAIK):

On 30 Gb HDD: Music: 15 Gb, Maps: 7,5 Gb, personal POIs: 7,5 Gb

On 40 Gb HDD: Music: 18 Gb, Maps: ? Gb, personal POIs: ? Gb

meaning that 40 Gb HDD owner has only 3 Gb+ of music space on 10 Gb+ HDD.

For 40 Gb HDD I have seen 50:25:25 ratio on some forums meaning 20Gb:10Gb:10Gb, but my Columbus reported 18 Gb left on music partition when it was empty.

Units with 30Gb drives should have two partitions (music in one and maps & POI's combined in the other). At least that how they left the factory.

Newer maps (v7 onwards I think) had a newer style POI file which also had to sit in its own partition. Hence the three partitions and these units having 40Gb drives.

It is possible to upgrade firmware on some 30Gb units to one with 3 partitions so that newer maps can be used: http://www.my-gti.com/3374/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-and-information

It is also possible to modify how these partitions are allocated (size of the drawers) to some extent: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/forums/f78/how-re-partition-hdd-your-rns510-62954.html

Or to change the HD for a larger / faster one: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/forums/f78/rns-510-hdd-replacement-ssd-swap-diy-60984.html

Yes the firmware I loaded for 402x split the 30gb into the ratio 70:25:5 for music:maps:poi. Much more sensible giving over 20gb for music and 7.5gb for maps which is comfortably sufficient.

Yes....i emailed Navteq and ask them...these maps will not work with older columbus units.  I also asked them if they were going to release free map updates for the older units...they declined to answer that one  - so i take it it is a no.

I was quoted around £200 for a map upgrade by the local dealer, compared to copilot on my S3 with quarterly map updates at 19 quid.

Had the same with my last car - a land cruiser - resorted to eBay for a copy and ended up with a half functional unit so won't do that again. Paid full price in the end to sort it.

I've come to the conclusion that factory sat nav ain't worth the cost.

Couldn't agree more with the last sentence.

(you did send from your nexus 7) lol

It is great to have it all built in but even the latest maps are out of date to a point and the update costs are a laugh.

I will be going back to my free regularly updated nokia drive maps once V9 maps become too outdated.

Or you could just use google and have access to the latest maps all of the time for the cost of a few DVD-R's

I wouldn't want to break the law and as I have a zero cost option it would be pointless.

But thankyou for the suggestion.

I was thinking of upgrading to v9 maps (via dealer) when the car goes in for its service soon but my firmware is 2760, is that going to be compatible or will I need to update firmware as well?

Martin

AFAIK you'll need 3xxx firmware or higher to support the new POI format.

Upgrading will wipe your music and maps as it creates three partitions not two.
