Traffic sign recognition

Featured Replies

Any info on the vrs having traffic sign recognition displayed on the maxidot? Lots of pictures of the maxidot showing this feature but nothing mentioned in the brochure.

I have ordered the Columbus and the car has lane assist which is the same camera used for the traffic sign recognition

I've seen the same pics but I'm not sure if that information comes from the camera or from the nav maps info.

Traffic Sign Recognition

With a traffic sign recognition system, you will never again overlook a no passing or speed limit sign. A multifunction camera capable of recognizing signs monitors the area in front of the car, and compares any signs found with examples stored in its database. The speed limit or no passing warning that is displayed on the instrument panel or on the Columbus navigation system panel can save you from many unpleasant consequences.

The system is capable of recognising signs located on the right, left and above the road, as well as variable traffic signs (informational light boards). Sign recognition precision is increased by intelligent cooperation with the Columbus navigation system.

Types of signs displayed:
speed limit
no passing
end of previous signs and general end of restriction.

The system can even recognise supplemental signs (when wet, trucks, motorcycles, direction arrows).

The traffic sign camera, if fitted, is in the rain/light sensor mounting behind the mirror

I've got the lane assist camera but my maxidot does not show traffic signs.

I'm not sure, but maybe you have to activate it?

The traffic sign recognition is an extra and works only with the Columbus stereo/nav.

In UK, optional on SE & Elegance with Columbus.

In UK, optional on SE & Elegance with Columbus.

The implication here is that it is standard with the optional Columbus system:

"Using a camera mounted behind the rear view mirror, the Traffic Sign Recognition (as part of the Columbus satellite navigation system) recognises traffic signs relating to speed limits and overtaking limits on the road. These are then displayed on the infotainment device and the Maxi DOT computer."

Is that what you meant?

Have this system in a c-class that's at my work. When I drive that car I don't even look at what it's showing as I have already read the same sign. To be honest i think the system is a waste of time and another gadget that will also add to the degrading drop in driving standards as to many people are relying these gadgets to drive there cars.

I wanted to check if I would have it on my build because I know I didn't spec it.. so, I had a Google.

I found this: http://www.skoda.co.uk/models/HotspotDetail?HotspotName=New%20Octavia%20Estate%20-%20Traffic%20Sign%20Recognition&WebID=3e1f7ded-131f-435f-8be0-87500e18c873&Page=technology

and assumed it was only optional on SE & Elegance...

...until I re-read it! lol

It refers to the Columbus being optional on them both and by that it must infer that, yes it is on ALL Columbus, including vRS etc.

I checked Page 161 of the Columbus manual and there too by it's inclusion must mean it is included with ALL Columbus.

As it shows on the MFD, surely the head unit is irrelevant? Or is it Skoda UK have decided it'll be a Columbus only option?

Strange about it only being on the Columbus, if you read the Amundsen manual it says you can turn it on in there i'm sure?

Or maybe it was just the standard Oct MKIII manual I was reading? I don't remember it saying that it is dependent on the Columbus though.

I'm pretty sure it does manually need turning on though (from what I remember)

I think it can be useful at times. We have lots of villages and some of them are kilometers long, some even with large parts with no houses in between. It's easy to forget you're still inside one of these villages and you might not even remember if/when you saw one of those restriction-off signs and step on it and then you see a radar waiting patiently for you. :) It's one of the things I use on my phone nav quite often.

Unless this is something paired with HUD or speed recognition gives audible warning, I don't see how it ever comes to use. Surely nobody is watching maxidot instead of the road and in just about any condition you would see road sign on the actual road faster than the camera would?

I got a SP30 in Lincoln on a dual carriageway. This is because they only post a 30mph sign upon entering and no more signs in the town. For some places I guess it is good as a reminder.

I think the idea is that you drive normally looking at the signs itself.

Then on those occations where you maybe miss a road sign or in areas where lots of limit changes are in place you can glance down at your dash to check the current speed limit etc.

I was told by my dealer that it isn't a feature of the Columbus on the UK market but as I'd asked for it explicitly they argued the case with Skoda and that my vRS should be coming with it on. Mind you it won't be arriving until December at the earliest because I've specified options (custom build not factory!)

Oh good, more confusion over the specs.

I don't know how the system works in the VAG group, in the merc at work it only shows it for a couple of seconds the disapears. so its not really any help, maybe you can call the signs back up to show the last 5 or so.

I can't get the sign recognition feature to work on my vRS. It was included on my order back in July. Only got the car two days ago after 27weeks. Everything else I spec'd is there and works, although I feel the auto wipers go crazy when driving above 50mph!

Can you post up the list of option codes from the label in the boot, or the sticker in your service book (but I think they have stopped service books now?)

Particularly interested in any beginning with QR
