Dealer registering car before its in the country!

Featured Replies

My new fabia was supposedly loaded onto the ship at Emden yesterday so it could possibly land at the dealer sometime next week.

At the same time the dealer sent me a DVLA "confirmation of registration details" by email to sign and return.

This Statement is issued on behalf of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) at first registration of a motor vehicle.

Despite me clearly saying I would take delivery sometime in October (I expected mid to end) and not before, this document had the date of registration as yesterday, 18th Sept. (remember the car is still on the ship)

It was heavy going talking to the salesman who first kept repeating it doesnt affect me and it was perfectly normal (first time I've encountered it) and it wasnt "pre-registration".

But when pressed he did concede the registration date stated would also be on the V5C. It took a lot of talking to get him to change it.

I haven't paid for the car yet and the finance is not yet applied for. Also who knows, I may reject the car on inspection if I find any faults.

Why was he doing this? I suspect some bonus is at stake or some financial jiggery pokery. I certainly dont want them saying "but its registered in your name so you have accepted it" before I inspect and sign off payment.

It does not really matter, he has First registered it, he has not Road Taxed it has he,

& you would not be accepting the Warranty Running from before the car is collected other than a day or 2 difference.

You would also be getting the first MOT done 3 years on from October, not September.

Ask them for the explanation, because the fact you are the Registered Keeper of a Vehicle not yet in the UK is strange.

Being the Registered Keeper makes you kind of responsible for a vehicle you do not own or have charge over.

It does not really matter,

FIrst MOT is 3 years from date of first registration....

It does not really matter, he has First registered it,

I see "Date of first registration DD/YY/MMMM", I'm going to expect that it was first driven on that date and not a month later!

FIrst MOT is 3 years from date of first registration....

... which puts the first MOT in the warranty period, plan with no drawbacks?

If the changes that are happening with the DVLA or what ever the Dealership is playing at has the vehicle registered in the month early,

then the Dealer will have to be sorting it out, and that might have to involve money. So might be worth the couple of weeks out.

How I understand it is that this is only so the Dealer can allocate a registration to the car so it can be taxed when needed.

I got a similar notification from the DVLA to say that my personalised reg number had been allocated to the Monte but it also said that this does not mean it has been registered.

Don't know if this is the same situation but xman's right, the MOT is 3 years from the date that the car was first registered with the DVLA.

Ahem, you can MOT up to a month early anyway.

Steve is right though as registered keeper (my son) would be held responsible for the vehicle (including insurance).

Insurance

Included with the application for first licensing and registration of the motor vehicle described in this Statement was a

certificate of insurance or security in respect of liabilities to third parties which provides insurance cover for the named

keeper of the vehicle. The insurance cover is valid on the date of registration when the first vehicle licence for the

vehicle comes into force.

Making a false declaration is a criminal offence for which you could be fined and/or imprisoned.

Salesman did mention the complimentary 7 days insurance.......I dont understand whats going on....I can only assume hes going to try and get me to take delivery in September. "Most buyers want to take their car as soon as it arrives...."

Edited by xman

It could be the dealer wants it registered before the end of September for their sales quota as they get bonuses from the manufacturer for hitting targets.

My wife's Fiat 500 was registered before it was in the UK as the salesman rang to tell us he had the chassis number and would register it ready for it coming over, this was in September as well.

We had to wait another week or two after delivery to get her reg transferred from her old car onto the Fiat although the dealer did sort it all out and paid for the transfer and fitted the new plates.

Sounds to me like they're trying to get it in the September figures to me...bonus payment etc?

Could be something totally honest like making sure there's no delay on handover but why not just be honest in the first place IF that's the case?

Allocation is one thing - date of registration is another.  I'd not expect it to be registered officially until the day (or at least week) I collected it.  My Scirocco was registered 3 days before I collected it (paperwork delay) and was no issue I was aware of although it was taxed on the day of registration; Fabia was registered on the day I got it.  3 or 4 weeks is stretching it

7 days complimentary insurance is to allow you to drive away on the day - no delays for insurance, or for you to forget and not be able to drive it.

It seems odd, but maybe it is lik ethe example above - they've "allocated" the reg to the vehicle, but it isn't registered yet.  Although the date of first reg would go against that.

I disagree.  It does matter.

If the car is regestered in the OPs name before the dealer or the customer have actually seen it what happens if there is a problem with it?

I've seen enough cars damaged while on transport.

Sorry, but yes, of course it obviously matters,

to explain as i never made it clear. but i thought reading it might be clear enough how i meant it.

I did mention Being the Registered Keeper of a car he does not have the charge/keeping of (or the ownership off or actual  title of yet,)

But according to the V5 he does, as in Registered Keeper.

It does not matter to the OP really what the salesman says.  It does matter over their actions though.

Line 2 of post #2, 'and you would not be accepting.......'

Post #1, says he might not be accepting it has no finance on place on it etc,

in effect it is not his car and he is not the Registered Keeper, only the Dealership made him that,
