Remap without rolling road...

Featured Replies

Just had my car booked in for timing belt and water pump (£336 all in, not too bad I don't think), and they also offered me a remap too, I asked if they did a rolling road and said no, they also said outright that I would get 50bhp increase. Now I know that most people with a stage one map on here see roughly an extra 30bhp, What do you think? I think a rolling road would be better as they can see the power and how it's being deployed and smooth it out, am I right in thinking this?

You don't need a rolling road to have a remap, all it will do is show you the output on a more accurate scale. You will feel the difference once the map is applied on a normal road.

  • You can have a remap without a RR but it is likely to be a generic plug and play jobby.

They plug in, chance the map on the ECU - bosh, you drive away

I had that done on my old PD130 Ibiza

  • You can get a plug & play remap with a RR

they'd probably run on the RR before and after the remap to show you the differnet figures and curves

  • or you can get a custom map on a RR

they'll run before and after and then carry out any tweaks to the map, to smooth delivery/limit torque, etc as requested

I'd also agree that a 50bhp increase looks a little optimistic

You are not going to get 50bhp extra without more work than just a remap, generic or custom.

Thats what I thought when I heard 50bhp. What are these plug and play maps like? I would prefer a rr before and after I think, just to know what I have! Also, would a down pipe, decat and cai be good to get before the map?

+50 Bhp is to sell you it realistically I got 33 when I had it rrd some time after but it depends what they are charging

I sent my ecu off and had it done and it was £99

I've never looked back best value for money mod ever

They can certainly take that into account but you'd be looking a more specific remap, and to be honest if you add a FMIC you'd be stage 2 ready (correct me if I'm wrong)

With just a remap you'll be happy,if you won't more(ie stage two) really you need to start looking at brake and suspension upgrades first then turbo back exhaust, intercooler and then the map....

Have a look at the Performance Upgrades section. AmD is the heading.

Dyno test is a must!

All my mapping is done "live" on the road.  I go out and run logs using VCDS, email mapper, get file, flash car, go out, run logs with VCDS whilst I monitor smoke, EGTs, boost spikes, exhaust manifold pressures and eventually you get a good map.

This reminds me, I need to flash my car with the latest map.... :D

There's nothing wrong with some mappers' plug and play maps. APR and Revo (I'm fairly sure Revo don't write custom maps) to name two offer maps at stages 1, 2, 2+, 3 and beyond with their own additional hardware.

All very fine and dandy if 'one' has VCDS!

The theory behind not needing a dyno run is all development work to write the file for stage 1-2-3 etc

This is very much more apparently on newer 2.0 TFSi TSI engines.

So is that a 'Yes' for dyno or 'No'?

Interesting stuff! Not looking for mad power, and handling will get a look in too yes. They offered it for £249, but didn't ask what brand of map it was. Seems the majority would say a rr is quite important, besides, how will I know what to say when someone asks how much power I got?!

RR is unnecessary for a stage 1.

Since they said "+50", your what to say is "180 + 50 + fudge factor" or "makin' toofifty brake eezee wif the map innit". :giggle:

and flashing cable/software. :)

Some of the very best mappers around actually only use rolling road to get base map on and then tune live on the road using live emulators and det cans ;-)
