All good stuff :)

What I don't like to see is people just blindly going for the biggest setup they can, that's all. Based purely on disc size.

Like on the Octy2, jumping upto the 345mm setup - it weighs a massive amount!

Ive driven both cars.  Im sure it is to do with cost as well, but IMO the Mk5 brakes are definitely better just as the rest of the Mk5 is infinitely better than the Mk4 (dont tell him that though lol)

More than my life is worth,

Plus his car hasn't seen stock setup in a longwhile so I think he would find it hard to give a fair opinion.

That's the last thing I want to do, just so happens I have a good friend in the Mk4 R32 fold and these are available at a cost I can swallow.

I can see that a Porsche Brake Kit with 323mm or 330mm could potentially be ideal but with priorities other than my car also factoring into budgeting cost does become a factor, the calipers alone are accessible but combined with adaptors for the carriers and brake lines and discs and pads............I mean :o

I fancy the R32 twinpots with boggo vented 334mm discs and even std pads to start with will have a marked impact for the better and can be done on budget.

One to mull over.

Sparkly, I am running the standard 312mm on the Golf 4 motion, I have standard Pagid discs and Ferodo DS2500 pads, my car stopped extremely well all day long at Oulton Park on the track day. Rears are standard pads and standard discs.

I have also run 288mm on our standard Fabia VRS MK ii, I made the addition of Yellow Stuff pads to this car, again with Pagid discs and on two track days the car had plenty of stopping power. Again, rears are standard pads and discs.

Brakes on my Golf will probably become four pot Brembo at some point when funds allow, but I plan to use the standard set up even when the Turbo goes on.

you can always cancel out the additional weight with some lightweight alloys.....then some 2 piece discs......then

Well any upgrade I run will be accompanied by some new uprated pads and fluid aswell as new discs so I'm costing these in to any kit I consider.

Likely candidates are some upper end Ferodo or EBC pads and either Motul RBF600 or ATE Super R Blue fluid depending on how expensive a month this turns out to be. Little concerned that online sources point to Ferodo DS2500 not being road legal.

DS2500 are really good, better than the Yellow stuff but twice the price, not sure they are twice the pad but definitely better, they are also black so do not attract attention.

I changed fluid to a Gulf high spec fluid, can't remember the numbers.

It's a sad little admission but I really like that EBC pads are colour coded

I was actually a little gutted when my H&R springs and RARB didn't match :(

Gulf RF800 has very similar specs to Motul RBF600 (almost identical wet/dry/viscosity). Or there's RF1000 as well, with a higher spec again.

I've just picked up some RF800 from Opie actually, for my next change.

Thanks Wardy, I can get a couple of litres of ATE Super Racing Blue for a good price and as the car will only be an occasional track day warrior, I'm thinking this will suffice. Plus it has the advantage of coming in sensible litre bottles. I have seen that you need approx 1.5 litres to change out your fluid, so having 2 litres will hopefully allow for wastage, plus it has the cool benefit of being blue which will be a good guide to say that we have flushed out all of the old.

Eurgh, I am being sucked in by the many many many sets of cheap 312/256 sets of calipers on offer out there.

The fronts alone could be as cheap as:

£100.00 to purchase (set I'm looking at comes with free 256mm calipers and carriers in with the deal), recently stripped and painted red.

£60.00 for a set of Eicher 312mm front discs.

£100-150 gets me a lot of option on the pads inc DS2500's

Thats £260.00-£310.00 the lot, it will be mostly as new and have friends who will help me fit. Even a well priced R32 kit will be more or less double that.

Oh and did I mention I would then have some 256mm calipers sat to one side ready for discs and pads.

I have made the assumption that I can use my existing lines, am I right on that? EDIT just double checked the 312mm pictorial, they do.

Sounds like a plan to me.  Will still look 100% OEM then as well.

Great progress so far and the colour looks great with a bit of polish :)

Plans for the brakes sound good 312s/ 256s are the bet compromise for an oem+ upgrade

At the last minute turns out these were for Mk5 platform.

Can get a fully refurbed set of 312mm front calipers and carriers for £200.00, bumps up the price for the kit and no 256mm's for free in the package but would come freshly painted and should hopefully be as good as new.

R32 calipers are still there if I want them.....................errm

Hey DH, how did you find the service from GB automotive, it's there ebay site I am looking at buying from.

What was the quality of the refurb and paintwork?

You got a link to those? Might be of interest to a mate who's looking.

And on the brake fluid, what spec is ATE Super Racing Blue? 1.2-1.3L should do you a full change.

Sorry Wardy, the item got resisted at £75.00 :o !!!! Plus postage as you might imagine they looks to have gone :(

http://www.funkypower.co.uk/catalogue.php?make=&model=&year=&level1=&level2=&level3=&id_product=5796 it's US so you'll need to convert from Fahrenheit.

I'll dig out the link where VrSy listed all the higher end fluids, ATE Super R Blue was a few degrees short of being the same as RBF600 on wet and dry boiling points.

Glad to hear 2 litres will cover it

So I was going to be indecisive but I couldn't make my mind up

Errrrm just bought some 7j 16" Seat Leon alloys (bargain)

Bit of kerbing but should be some nice 195/50/16 winter mode wheels

......and some gnarley 215/45/16 federal/Yokohama track beasties in summer

If anyone needs four budget 205/55/16 with near full tread will be selling the existing tyres v soon.

.........Not quite brakes or dampers
