Sparkly's Mk2 vRS (now sadly returning to stock)

New engine at 43k, hope not.

This is a new development, owned for about 12k now and this is my first unexpected light.

Putting it down as an anomaly for now, but will monitor.

I can stomach a little oil use, not a deal breaker for me if it starts using a bit more.

maybe change the oil you are putting in ;) I doubt it would "suddenly" develop a thirst ..... they generally seem to be either good or bad, and not change their minds! lol...

My thoughts exactly, think it's liable to be the oil used at service.

Hmmm 2.5k miles covered since serviced (3.7litres castrol)

.........and I have an oil light.

This is new

3.7 litres used to fill or 3.7 litres is what it burned in the 2.5k miles?

3.7 litres is the oil to fill to capacity (3.6+0.1 for luck)

So it is looking like my first mod for 2014 will be uprating my front brakes to 312mm setup and with some tasty new pads to boot.

Insurance is due for renewal in Feb so I need to put the Briskie Insurance sponsors to work to see if they can outdo Admiral when my renewal quote appears, am hoping to find someone that will be accomodating to future planned mods, have heard that Brakes are a killer for putting renewal up.

From now til Spring I shall mostly be getting the car ready for it's first Track Day

Shopping list includes

Bilstein B8's (still)

Superpro Bushes (still)

16" cheap track tyres (new)

possible Intercooler, zorst + Stage 2 map

nothing to worry about, fetch it to our track day on 21st Feb at Oulton Park and it will cure the consumption problem.. Honest.

Consumption was just a blip, I'm convinced.

...and you just reminded me to check my diary for Oulton.

also YHPM sir ref those brakes :)

Insurance renewal for Mean Green is due in early Feb, have started talking to our site sponsors and am hoping to get onto a mod friendly policy with one of them and pave the way for a few changes in 2014

Hows the plasti dip on the wheels holding up so far?

  • Author

Hi Dan, sorry, I'd meant to reply on this.

The plastidip is holding up fine, to be honest I'm happy with it as these are a spare set of wheels but I'm not finding the plastidip to be all that easy to clean, I am constantly worried about applying too much pressure with my wash mitt, probably my own cautiousness rather than a reflection on the durability of the dip but I am neglecting the wheels a bit because of it.  Normally they would be an important part of the cleaning routine but naturally as you can't be using Iron-X or a dedicated wheel cleaner on plastidip you kind of have to accept that you wont be getting the brake dust off the wheels.  It's serving a purpose I guess is my answer (will try and post some recent pics soon)

I think it should probably be looked at as a 6 month duration either summer or winter season.  Beyond that I think the appearance won't be as you would want.

Saw you on the ist for CC.

Look forward to seeing you and the car there. :)

I will follow you down Sparkly if you are going there and back in one day that is?

Sparkly, I see you are running 213bhp - 270 lbs ft, is that still through the 7 speed DSG ?. I heard (on here) with the the 7 speed DQ200 torque output is the electronic limit set on the box.

If you map a car with one of these boxes supposedly you'll never see more torque output than that despite a power increase unless you get the DSG ECU re-flashed as well.

Have you had your DSG ECU flashed or is yours an earlier model. Andrew from DTUK tells me they have no problems with higher output through the DSG box but, as you're running one I thought I'd ask.

Hey themanwithnoaim, sorry yesterday evening was a bit hectic, only nipped on Brisky for a couple of minutes at a time there.

My car was remapped by Awesome GTI using APR Stage 1 Software with a rolling road (dynojet) before and after as per earlier in the thread.  In reality I haven't been to another Dyno and it has been suggested to me that although the BHP reading on the Awesome Dynojet is usually pretty accurate it might overread slightly on torque.  My car ran near 50 ft -lbs over stock spec with just 99RON fuel and an ITG Maxogen intake so take that as you will, they are nice numbers and until I go elsehwere they will remain part of my sig

Not sure what you mean when you say DQ200 is the torque limit, this is the designation of this variant of the DSG box

Some numbers for consideration.

200nm - 147 ft lbs torque

200 ft lbs - 271nm torque

Car comes as standard with 177bhp 250nm - 187ft lbs torque

My car dyno'd at

Stock+ 184bhp 325nm - 240ft lbs torque

APR Stage 1 213bhp 366nm - 271ft lbs  torque

All I can say is that I have had no issue giving my car maximum beans with no DSG interference at this state of tune.  I have had no DSG remap, although I am curious about this, more for the speed up of changes in manual and to improve the auto modes.

The once useless 'Sport' Mode now suits my car better than D for spirited driving as the car just gives and gives right into the higher rev range, as Sharkrider commented previously in the build thread the car has near full power at redline and then changing up drops around 2k revs but keeps me buzzing at over 200bhp.

Is your discussions with DTUK regards fitting a tuning box to a 1.4tsi or a diesel car with DSG?

Sparkly, the DTUK tuning box will be fitted to my ordered Mk3 Octy 1.4TSI DSG when it arrives, I have a dying (turbo's farting like a vicar and the exhast is burning oil faster than the Arabs can dig it up) Mk2 Octy 2.0 TDI manual, I thought I'd replace it like for like in the Mk3 but, a friend suggested I try the TSI with DSG and I love it.

A tuning box is the only way to tune the Mk3 right now, I'd probably thrown a high flow panel air filter in too and uprate the pads but, nothing more really, its just a famly car that Dad can have fun in when alone.

Ok great, think that particular 1.4tsi 140ps is just the Turbocharged version so you should be fine to go for a box with it.  I'm not sure about adding a box to the 1.4tsi Twincharger on the Fabia vRS as I see it as a simple tune for a complicated little engine.  With that said the Rider of Sharks ran a TMC on his car with no issues.

Have seen the threads on the 3 and noone having unlocked the car yet, imagine noones rushing as the majority of owners will want to preserve their warranties anyway.

Not sure that even with a box the 1.4tsi 140 will get to torque figures to trouble the "alleged published" 250nm limits of the DSG box.  Edit stand corrected it comes in at a healthy 250nm stock.

As a fun Dad mobile, take a look into RARB availability, no ride compromise and nice improvement in handling.

I really tempted by one of these, the oil consumption does concern me tho, I don't know a whole lot about them tho. Is it that common? Is there a common cause and cure or just one of those things?

Thanks

Car currently smells of:

StripperScentPremiumAirFreshenen-3.jpg

Far nicer than the "Eau de Sweat and Shame" you might imagine.

So good I might ignore the slightly racist to Mexicans packaging and buy some:

I have no patience :)

Just ordered some of the Chemical Guys Chuy BubbleGum and the Purple Stuff Grape Soda from Juicy Detailing - which I just discovered is a DTUK (Diesel Tuning UK) company.

Definitely need some kind of Brisky discount B)

also going to have some of these to try out before I make the leap to machine polishing in the spring
