Daniel's Seat Ibiza Sport PD130

Hey.

I was looking for a Seat Ibiza Sport with the PD130 engine as i've heard amazing things about the torque, economy and how much power you can get out of it after a few mods. So I finally found one...

It was in Kent (I'm from Leeds). So I booked the train tickets to go see it, bit of a gamble really as I kinda had to buy it!

I got there and was instantly let down :( The wing mirror was held on with tape and it had quite a few dents around the car despite the guy telling me it was in really good condition.

The worst part of it was the horrible horribbbleeee sound that started after a few mins when the engine was on... suspected dying DMF. I was even more annoyed.

Cash exchanged I drove it home at 8pm from Kent. I got home at around midnight, went straight to bed as I'd been travelling on trains for 6 hours haha! The car seemed to go well considering its been neglected a bit.

Anyway, I know with diesels they get super clogged up due to the EGR. My aim for this car is to get it running absolutely spot on before I remap it. So I started with cleaning out the EGR and inlet manifold which took forever. It's done 120k miles so it was safe to say it was pretty clogged up!

I'm a bit of a MPG hunter and always strive to get the best when I'm on long runs but I also absolutely love back roads, a nice combo of both is good I think :)

This is the car!

I then ordered a single mass flywheel and clutch kit from eBay for a price of £260. I've heard loads of things about the chatter being stupidly loud on the 6 speeds at idle but there is absolutely none. Really happy with the kit, all the shakes and awful sounds have now gone!

10195167315_ac998dfb1b_c.jpg

I then performed a LiquiMoly diesel purge, supposed to be much better than Forté as its concentrated not diluted in the tank.

10195151145_779527dfe9_c.jpg

I do however think I am losing boost, lots of oil on my connectors and I can hear a wooshing noise when going for it. I think its the intercooler too so I might upgrade to a FMIC asap.

10195038584_9d68f953ea_c.jpg

Finally I created my own boost leak, but the system isn't even holding 10 psi so I think I do have a big leak somewhere! Can't seem to find it though as I have to hold my hand over a pipe to keep the pressure in so can't look around the car haha

10195130345_0626f45d47_c.jpg

10195124965_4520f12863_c.jpg

And finally, after servicing the car fully and doing all the cleaning of the inlet etc I managed to average this across 26 miles from Uni the other day. Was really happy, but I did have to work for it

Mods to come are:

FMIC

Remap

Sort the paintwork out

Hybrid turbo but not for aggggeees!

Thanks for reading :)

This was a week later:

I had a "mufflerectomoy" done and I'm really happy with it. I can't hear any noise when I'm normally driving which is perfect but when you press on it does sound a little deeper, can't hear any owl hooting noise though when I let off which is a bit of a let down :( .

I've definitely noticed the turbo spooling faster and coming back from Newcastle to Leeds the other week at around 70mph I noticed around a 4mpg improvement compared to the week prior with the exact same driving conditions/speed!

The mufflerectomy/cost £120 to do then I took my cat to a place in Leeds and they gave me £60 for it! Was gobsmacked haha

This is how it sounds now.

Cruise control kit is on the way too

I beat my personal best for MPG today! Managed 83mpg average on a steady run from Uni back home!

I've been doing a few sorting out issues, my boost pipe is still leaking despite shrink wrapping it, so I went with a tried and tested method of cable ties. Seems to be holding boost a bit better now, might all be in my head though haha.

Notice the oil leaking at the bottom of the pipe!

You can see why it's leaking, the lugs are worn and the pipe is all scratched. Seal looks dead too compared to the other one (Pictured)

My passenger side doesn't lock when you press the lock button in the car, it simply pops back up so I took it apart to see the root of the problem. Apparently the microswitch wears at an angle on the cam which plays all kind of havoc, so I took it apart and switch it around to give it more contact area. Fitted it all back together and the door isn't locking at all now haha, no power so I must have not connected something. Not all swings and roundabouts haha

Can see how it is on an angle, where it has worn away.

nice write up so far and a good gauge of the simple things that can be done to keep a hile mileage car running sweet.

Are the yellow dial surrounds a retro fit by the previous owner?

I had them on my Ibiza PD130 but the car was yellow so i assumed they were colour coded to the body (having seen black ones on a black car and red ones on a red car)

Cheers mate! I've got this inner itch to sort out all the niggles, espcially to improve the running and mpg before doing anything too advanced! :)

This is the thing, i've seen another blue ibiza sport the same code as mine with the yellow dash however i've also seen blue ones in a blue car? My first thought was that they were retrofitted because the 6 dial dash solder behind tends to crack and needs to be replaced so I thought that too. I'm not sure, it's just annoying that I get the question of why is your dash yellow when your car is blue question quite a bit haha.

Just updating some more now

I hope you're happy the car was at least quite a bit cheaper.

I would be well peed off if I'd got a train that far and the car was not as described....!

Yeah I was, like, I said straight up to him that i'm really really let down with the condition despite what he said. He picked me up from the train station in his van and on the way to see the seat I told him of how I went to go look at another Seat Ibiza a few days back and it wasn't as described, he did seem to go a little quiet after I told him that haha.

I suppose it's a live and learn thing, definitely won't be doing such a spontaneous decision again!

I've put down a deposit for a hybrid turbo which should be with me next week.

And as my boost pipes are not all that I've also ordered the Airtec intercooler kit with all pipes, can't wait.

My cable tie cheap mod is working well and no more oil is leaking for now yay.

I went to get the car tracked yesterday as the car feels dodgy to drive and my tyres are wearing away on the insides. Turned out the bushes in the wishbones were really badly gone, so much play.

So I drive to the other side of Leeds to pick up some new ones and bushes, really wish I'd gone for solid mount ones now but maybe another day, this has been so easy to do so far. Only problem I'm having is inserting the bush back into the console so im waiting for the garage guy to nip down to help me - be nice to people and they'll be nice back! haha

Drive to the other side of leeds was hellish, 2 hours in traffic and some dozy bast in a leon nearly rear ended me, ended up skidding and drifting right past me!!

Gave the car a little once over with some stain remover as the seats are pretty awful. It worked to an extent but they could really do with being wet vacced properly!

The marks on the seats are where it is drying not the stains themselves. I really love the interior on these now, I just find it hard to look out of when at junctions. Might just because i'm a borderline midget though haha

How are your boost pipes holding up?

I got fed up with mine popping off, and was loathed to pay the extortionate prices for replacements, so I fixed them properly :)

They're still holding up fine, not a problem since the day I did it.

I never had any of mine pop off completely, just kind of rocked to one side if that makes sense?

Looks like a good idea that though dude, I've just ordered the full kit to replace them now so I won't need to worry about pop off / leaks again woo.

What were VW thinking when they incorporated these bayonet clips with awful alu lugs? Surely it would have been cheaper to produce straight through pipe with T clamps / jubilee clamps?

Possibly a cheeky tactic as they knew they would wear = more dollar for them.

This following week is exciting, hybrid turbo, intercooler and cruise control stalks! I've literally exhausted my money until xmas so I can't do anything else to the car. Maybe a remap, depends what the overdraft says haha

Nice write up, looks like you have saved a PD130 Sport and hopefully with have many many more years on the road now!

IIRC the yellow 6 dial cluster is standard. They all came out yellow for some reason, go figure!

Thanks for the replies guys, means a lot to hear positive words and makes writing it all up worth it!

I wish the paintwork wasn't as shoddy as it is, it's just dented everywhere and makes me lose interest in cleaning it etc. Suppose it can add to the sleeper effect though.

So today I wanted to see where I could locate my boost gauge that I kept from my old car. I didn't want it on the A pillar as I find it restricted my view quite a bit before. The other choice was in one of the vents, the middle ones are a pain to get to and have to remove quite a bit of stuff and I wasn't prepared to do that so I chose the outer vent nearest to the drivers door.

Started disassembling the vent to see how I could go about it, bearing in mind this is the first thing i've done like this, was taking a bit of a gamble really as I know I could get a replacement vent for pennies if I mess this up.

So with my trusty snippers, files and measuring tape I cracked on!

10514183385_2af25fcf87_b.jpg

Snipped this but completely off:

The gauge!

10514429583_08cbb609cf_b.jpg

More snipping, not that tedious really

10514312575_c7262dc8f5_b.jpg

I measured the diameter of the boost gauge, then deducted that from the diameter of the vent where it will be sat, I then halfed the final figure to determine how much plastic to leave in the middle to make the boost gauge sit bang in the middle. White dots show where I measured it to:

 10514267235_6e87f4ffee_b.jpg

10514366796_6b74085f64_b.jpg

The vents were loose ever so slightly loose as I had to remove the frame that held it sturdy, so out with the silicone I sealed around where it sits, currently drying.

Final product! Really happy with it to say it was a spontaneous decish today!

Thank you!

I've fitted the boost gauge, it's not plumbed or wired in yet though as waiting for the EGR delete pipe first. I also cut the plastic couling behind it back a little and taped it off so it doesn't heat up the silicone sealant in the vent. Silver kind of stands out, I wish I had a black one now!
