Hi Andy.

Yes if you take everything out you still get the booming noise. However. It seems putting a wheel in there seems to suppress it.

So it is resonance then. Try bunging a piece of carpet or something in there that will alter the resonant frequency and absorb sound?

I have a space saver wheel in mine. Tried it without the wheel in there and then put it back but with foam matting and rugs and all sorts of stuff stuck in there.

Still makes the noise on continuous bumps so that isn't a fix for me.

Funny thing is this car is so quiet otherwise i.e in the Scout I could hear when you ran over old paint lines or rough marks in the road, this car its fairly suppressed in comparison. Could be the tyres Conti 2's?

The noise is definitely reactive to continuous sharp bumps so its like the resultant movement causes something to move enough to make the boom. I'm thinking rear hatch or parcel tray, roof/boot lining or rear seats. I can't see how, looking at all the rubber bushes on the suspension underneath it can be transferred to the body from there to resonate so something's moving.....

If its the body flexing making the inside air move around then we will never fix that so.....

Is everyone else getting this just on Conti 2's or another thought, if you have rear seat passengers do you still get the nosie????

Hi everyone,

As you know from the post of Peterbaarlo, we have the same problem in the Netherlands. As a result of not being helped by dealer and importer, I emailed to skoda HQ. The answer was 'there is no problem'. Maybe it helps if not only mails from the Netherlands, but mails from GB as wel go to Skoda HQ. My complaint was about two things:

- cabin pressure

- noise

Email address is: sks.service'at'skoda-auto.cz

Please let me know if anyone likes to try this. If it isn't helping I'm thinking of using twitter to make our point.

The vents are on the side panels behind the bumper, above the level of the boot floor.

JsymVrs - do you get the booming without anything at all in the spare wheel well (so no wheel or polystyrene tray)?

It could just be the resonance of the spare wheel well?

Seems like it's the floor of the wheel well that resonates, so damping that oscillation with the tray (or just maybe some carpet) stops that happening. Floor design could use some additional pressed ribs to bring the frequency above audible range.Think you should get an SUK award for sorting the problem out for them - and for those owners who suffer.

Hi Andyvee

yes i still get the sound with nothing at all in the well. But putting a spare wheel in seems to deaden the sound.

As I said earlier, I don't appear to have that particular problem. Just for curiosity I will remove the spare wheel and rubber mat to see if I can get it to happen.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have tried driving with the tail gate closed but not locked so that air can pass, and then the noise is gone, so I think the problem is the vents that control the cabin pressure.

Ahem :p

I was in the dealer today taking a look at my vRS and they had another hatch in the showroom. I noticed that every time you shut the boot the fuel flap popped open. I wonder if this one will also have the booming noise issue when it hits the road. Certainly seems they have air problems with the Octavia 3 design

So either the interior is too well sealed for air to reach the vent, the bumper is too well sealed to let the air out, or one vent isn enough.

Not sure how many cars out there only have one vent. Most have one on each corner

Mine was doing this as well. They fiddled with the vents and it stopped it. It now seems to have started doing it again.

I don't have any booming though.

Pretty sure the Octavia II had 2 vents, one each side.

Weird! Surely the vent is just simply a hole with louvres across it. How can it be adjusted?

Maybe the flaps on it are prone to sticking shut?

Maybe the flaps on it are prone to sticking shut?

Possibly, in that case I assume they are not fixed but open and shut like a pressure valve. I have just tried removing my spare wheel and rubber mat (finally got around to it). It makes absolutely no difference as far as I can tell. My car obviously does not suffer from this particular problem.

Could it be that the problem is only pressent on models without the multilink aksle?

Nope on all models but not for all people ! reports from vRS and non vRS owners rules out suspension, tyres, wheel size etc.

Going on ctx400's post .... I wonder if cutting out a piece of the hatch rubber seal at a suitable place (centre bottom springs to mind) might sort it for those afflicted ?

Thing is that rubber seal is behind the boot wall at the back and if you look there are small round vent holes cut into the wall there (on both sides of the boot actually) to let the air get to it.

Feeling behind the wall through the holes there is like carpet underlay foam type insulation which I wonder if on some cars its actually covering up the vent and not letting the air flow through properly causing the problem? Mine I can just see the top of the foam through the vent holes and can't see the rubber seal but I haven't tried taking the wall off to see properly so.....???

Anybody know how to get in and have a look?

The interior trim in my combi only has holes on the driver side....

Which is the side the vent is

Which is the side the vent is

Yes it is drivers side looking at the pictures above.

Have you guys got the insulative material against the metal outer skin in veiw through the holes there? Can you feel it with your fingers?

Because I can't see how interior air gets to the vent if so, which seems to have with a layer of this in the way in mine, and I have the rumbling noise so....

The other thread here about having to slam doors to get them to close sounds like an air capture problem too. My GEN II was fine but now its real hard to close the Doors/boot comparitively so I reckon the air inside really does have issues getting out based on that too???

Where can i find the other tread you (snala) are reffering to?

The point I was making was that my combi only has the vent holes on the drivers side while he says his hatch has them on both.....

I've just been out to check, my combi has the holes only on one side too. I've not had more poking around as it was poring rain today so will get a good look on Thursday
