Tracking internet usage on wireless?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a DG834G that I share my internet connection on with two other people in the house. I do this on a trusting basis of course.

Recently I got a letter from wanadoo saying I was using 9Gb a month, and I'm on a 6Gb contract with them, so they said if it persists they'll MAKE me move to their 30Gb package.

Now I'll admit I'm on the net a lot but I never thought I would get even close to the 6Gb cap, let alone surpass it by 3Gb, which is why I wondered if any of the laptops were downloading a lot?

Is there a package out there which will happily sit on my desktop / taskbar and monitor the total monthly downloading amount, so I can track it a bit? It would also be nice to know which laptop was using what, but I think thats a little too much to ask.

Can anyone suggest anything for me to monitor this easily?

Wanadoo is capped? Since when? I've always been uncapped, why? The computers that work it out don't work. That's what I was told when I last called them.

Well, I'm gonna carry on regardless.

At least with "dialling up" on a USB modem you could track the amount you were using inbetween dialing up and signing off. Now I'm essentially using a LAN affair, I don't have a way of accurately tracking the amount of downloading being done, especially with three wirelessly attached laptops (one mine)

theres some remote admin programmes on download.com you can use.they can be used to monitor other computers on your network ;)

I use a little proggie called "My Bandwidth". I think it may be what you're looking for. It willl give you your exact usage.

Why not switch to a different ISP where you'll get a more generous allowance?

edit: For example, instead of

I'd have a scout around at other providers and migrate away from Wannado. Some of those on the 30Gb package who exceeded their limit have had e-mails telling them to find another provider!

As Stimps says one of the PlusNet packages does have a cheap monthly fee but be careful of the hidden charges if you leave "early". Also, the

Maybe they are targeting you under a fair usage policy rather than an enforced limit. As I understand it, if you are capped and you exceed you pay, no friendly warnings.

Not sure I can get 2MB down here. I might consider migrating but I've been with freeserve/wanadoo now since I got my Athlon 750 new back in 199___ ahem, 9. :o

For now I just want to check and monitor my download usage going through the router. I'm not sure however the program I'm using it checking the whole internet usage - I think its only doing my usage on the PC, and not for example, when I'm using my laptop on wireless downstairs from the lounge. :)

I'm pretty sure you can set the router up to write logs, that way you could see the sites visited by your compatriates, that is of course assuming that you want to know what porn they are downloading!!!

As long as I can get to see the porn as well?! :naughty:  Might check out the router as I haven't logged in to it for a while.

Off the top of my head, I think the DG834G only allows logging of "security" issues, rather than logging all the websites visited...there's probably a way around this though... :rubchin:

Does it have snmp?

What os are your friends pc's?

Of course the other question is, do you have security enabled? It might not be someone in your house who's hoovered up the bandwidth.

Where our office is based, we have a block of flats above us. I can find 3 wireless routers that aren't on our network, and two of them are unsecured!

I have security enabled yes, and allowed the other laptop users individually using the admin login, and ticking each one as it tried to get it.

Had a scour around the DG834G last night and can't see any way of tracking what usage the 3 laptops are using in download terms. I could put a child lock on it though! mwahahaha! :D

Since you leave a machine on all the time, you might want to have a look at MRTG.

I'm sure there are other things out there similar...I have one here, but it's a bugger to setup and needs snmp, mrtg might still need that, but I can't recall.

Either that up put the rate up a bit and move to an unlimited account..as said, I think I pulled files of IBM last month almost non stop, have the thick end of 40gb in iso images on my HD.

My laptop sometimes stays on for a long time, but I don't leave my main PC on 24/7 at all, which is why my folding amount has dropped a bit recently.

Currently got one of my previous number crunching towers on ebay - The farm is being split & sold. :D

I've heard something about plusnet today, so going to look into that now. ;)

Easy way round this, put a firewall rule in that only allows the bill payer to use usenet, P2P and other 'hogging' protocols. That won't allow you to monitor who is using as such, but it cures the problem instead of reacting to it.

Dave.

Plusnet don't do caps anymore as such - they now go on about contention ratios -

Jason, why not use one of the programs suggested here on all the computers and just say it's to check that all the usage is coming from your house? Like Phil put, it may not be as secure as you hoped and monitoring it for a month would highlight that, or would highlight that Wanadoo have got it wrong.
