Are French cars still unreliable?

Featured Replies

Yeah, there was a known fix for the K-Series - a head gasket that wasn't made of poor quality chocolate.

  • No idea on the 2.2, but the 2.0HDi is a massively reliable engine.   The problem with the French is they generally try to do loads of clever electrickery, that ends up going wrong.

  • I have to say, IMHO, car reliability on the whole seemed to peak about 5-10yr ago.   If you make a car 2x as complex then you have 2x as many opportunities for things to go wrong and modern cars are

Bien sûr que non

I cannot for love nor money kill my berlingo works van

142k and it just wont die, bounced off the limiter everywhere and smashed through the gears. Yet it keeps on breathing

They are 'hi lux' indestructable, wish I had the same engine in my kangoo.

I have Audi, Fiat and Renault on my drive.

The Fiat has been spot on bar needing a new battery and normal consumables.

Mrs G drives that most of the time and I never feel like it's going to let her down.

Audi does so little mileage it's hard to have an objective view. (fewer than 800 miles in 12 months)

The van does most of my donkey work, but does show its age and mileage a bit now

and always needs something doing to get it through the MOT.

But it's pretty reliable really, and so basic in the cabin that there's not much to go wrong.

Very comfortable to drive though.

I find it interesting that Peugeot does badly in the JD power survey http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/overall-results/1206902

Skoda get good results.

There are always horror stories, but my wifes friend has just had a catastrophic engine failure in her diesel 306  just outside of the 3 year warranty. Peugeot don't want to know and want £6000 for a new engine and the cars not worth that!

Renaults have upped their act recently so yes some are better than others.   Peugeot do have very thin body panels and dent so easily.

308?

306 hasnt been new for. About 13 years

Sorry, yes must be a 308!

So.........To answer the original question in Post #1

No..No more than any other brand

Not difficult for renault if my experience of Clio ownership was anything to go by. Don't think Skoda have much to worry about as the french always seem to be at/near the bottom of the pile in the which/JD power surveys etc.

@Soot1e

My old 405 was built of much tougher and galvanised sheet compared to my Octy, scary thin.

I think it's only because they don't have as much of a cult following so people don't go out if their way to fill the survey in. I won't accept that clove is more unreliable than German cars. I think they're all much of a muchness.

I should report that my wifes friend has now been offered a free engine for her Peugeot 308 that failed just outside of warranty from Peugeot. She has to pay all labour charges which is about half.

it's from 2000 they went paper thin,   you're right about the 405, a bit stiffer,  as is my Mums 1998 306  1.8 auto and has been her steed from new, apart the alarm that packed up 3 years ago it's been faultless.

Yup newer citroens are paper thin

The berlingo's are a joke! Lean slightly on the front wing and its bent in on itself! Done it a few times to the works berlingo's

Hatefull creations

Too right mate,  Just washing them causes a dent here and there.

Did you use a pressure washer?

Anything more than a trickle out of a hose will cause the bodywork to ripple

I suppose perhaps the exterior body shell doesn't need to be as strong as it used to be with all the safety designed into modern cars... and yet they are still heavier with all that extra crap and extras we expect onboard nowadays.

More fuel efficient engines, heavier cars... no gain.

Better reliability(?)

More electrickery, compact and convoluted designs... higher user cost to maintain as diy maintenance becoming increasingly impractical.

The skill in being a driver is being lost.

When people say they just want a car they get into, tell it where to go and it does it automatically I say we have them already...

They're called taxis!

Sorry I seem to have ventured off topic.

You really don't know what youre talking about!!

The panels are paper thin and the post had ahint of sarcasm

But i honestly believe a decent industrial high pressure washer will buckle a berlingo wing i promise

Sorry...even with your noted sarcasm..you still don't know what youre talking about

Our DS3 is very well built indeed...in fact better than our Fabia II vRS was

OK..I cant comment on a Berlingo...but equally can you comment on all French cars?

No?

Thought not

I ran a Citroen C5 estate a while ago, 2.2 diesel. FSH, 1 owner, had done 90,000 in three years, bought it at the auctions, wasn't what I was looking for but it was that cheap I couldn't say no to it.

Kept it two years and did 40,000 in it, two cheap services and four new tyres on it, i sold it to a friend for what I gave for it. He's done about 15000 in two years in it, still runs like a dream and everything works.

Regards all

Where VW used to have top notch reliability & build, & people would pay for quality.

Now money & profit ( i.e. Greed)  being the main driver of ALL the manufacturers seems to have leveled the playing field, by either just hiking prices ( BMW - Mercedes), or trimming costs & tipptoeing prices up, the rest of them.

Putting the JD power results into perspective, this only shows customer satisfaction with different areas of ownership, this survey in particular allows manufacturers to pick the best results & use them to highlight in their advertising, also the number of people from each manufactuer can skew results.

One area i firmly believe that should now be included are satisfaction of quoted MPG v actual. ( slightly off topic i read on BBC news that the EU are now looking into these claims given the skewed tests used).

To answer the question - You get lemons no matter what manufacturer you buy from.

A friend is back in the country for Christmas and has a Captur as a hire car. Must say it looks rather smart and seems well screwed together.

I didn't comment on the ds3

Sub 2000 the body panels on citroens / peugeots was a lot more substanstial. My old 306 hdi was an awesome car

Obviously i cannot comment on the new citroens etc. well we do have new berlingo vans and they are still hateful creatures. The strung out 1.6 hdi turbo's (110bhp) sound bloody aweful. I had to check it had 4 cylinders
