Ma Schitroen était merde.

French cars must be more reliable these days - but I would never buy another.

Citroen sont beaucoup plus fiables. Il est certainement à ce jour par rapport à la Fabia

  • No idea on the 2.2, but the 2.0HDi is a massively reliable engine.   The problem with the French is they generally try to do loads of clever electrickery, that ends up going wrong.

  • I have to say, IMHO, car reliability on the whole seemed to peak about 5-10yr ago.   If you make a car 2x as complex then you have 2x as many opportunities for things to go wrong and modern cars are

  • I inherited a 1999 (V) Peugeot 306 with the 70bhp 1.9 XUD engine.   I ended up running it for 12 years and 170,000 miles with only a perished radiator hose to attribute fault with.   It's main adv

I've had 2 French cars in the past, a 1986 Renault 5 GTL 1.4 which I had from 1994 to 1998 and a 1999 Renault Megane 1.6 16v they were on the whole they were pretty reliable thought Both had issues with drive shaft boots and the megane had an intermittent fault with the Indicator which started indicating left on the off position and the only way to switch it off was to put the stalk up to the indicate right position, despite changing the stalk and a visit to an auto electritian no fault could be found or the fault went away only to return ON the day I traded the car in for my first Fabia

My schitroen van does a similar thing!

But it indicates for itself :o

Moves the stalk the lot when you turn the wheel!

Good idea from the french that one! No more use of indicators required

Its always a mistake asking if another manufacturer or model is any good in a car forum

There will always be a blinkered view

I once had a Renault Megane II...It was merde!!

As said...we now have a Citroen DS3 and its a far better car in every respect than the Fabia II vRS

Sorry if that's not what you want to hear..but that's a fact ....In our opinion of course

OR

My question is : Is Skoda still reliable ?

thats a whole different thread. ;) interesting reading so far though. :)

My Octavia is totally reliable...Nearly 4 years old and only had a new battery

The Fabia vRS we sold in August...two new shocks, rattled from new....oh and.... A new Engine !!

The 1.4tsi is a complete dog of an engine

Nice idea in theory but in practice.......

not to mention new alloys   :giggle:

The Fabia is a triumph of marketing over substance, both father in laws and Chris`s wife`s Fabia rattled  and squeaked. My wife had a Ds3 as well for 3 years, faultless. Many people maybe had a 106, a £3800 car new with free insurance for "Kids" which was 2500 so you got a new car for a grand, so a new car for peanuts and that is why they depreciated too

not to mention new alloys   :giggle:

Shush!! :giggle:

YES! Hellishly but thats part of the fun..i call it bonding

It's interesting googling some reviews of the 508 GT tonight. Autocar and Evo (generally the two that matter to me) say good things about it but its never been on my radar simply because its French!

http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/262696/peugeot_508_22_hdi_204_gt_review.html

I have absolutely no reason to doubt vag cars can unreliable btw and I try not to see anyone brand through rosé tinted specs hence the reason for this thread tbh. :)

My concern would be with the parent companies and PSA is not in a particularly good place at the moment. With a shrinking domestic market and a hard charge from the South Korean car makers they are suffering. Do consider the possible effects of this 3 years down the line.

Hopefully they can pull it around as the world wouldn't be the same without shonky french cars :giggle:

Not something I would buy TBH...It appears to be well made and innovative but looks too much like an Insignia, which is a dreadful car!!

I've had loads of French cars, Saxo's, 309's, 406, 407, Sxara's & to be honest they've been no more unreliable than the Skoda's I've owned.

My dad's last job saw him running French cars for the 1st time (sales rep) and he covered 100,000 miles or more in each of his cars over a 2year period with each one with only hand brake cable faults on his 406's, never had any problems on his 306 or 407's

Don't forget that many electronic parts in Skoda's are made in France (pic taken when replacing my speakers in my mk2 Octavia)

My friend owns a Citroen C4 1.6petrol (owned from new) and earlier this year it ran over 250,000miles  and has never broken down.

At the moment the most reliable car myself and SWMBO have owned is her current Rav4.2 & our S-Max, neither have required anything other than a service each year.

My question is : Is Skoda still reliable ?

I have to say, IMHO, car reliability on the whole seemed to peak about 5-10yr ago.

If you make a car 2x as complex then you have 2x as many opportunities for things to go wrong and modern cars are very complex.

never had any problems on his 306 or 407's

306 yes. I can believe that, barring a bit of wire burn on the glow plugs mine was faultless. 407? Not a chance, utter, utter garbage. If it wasn't telling you the tyres were flat it decided to disconnect the cruise control whilst on the motorway. If its not changing radio stations when you shut the door its turning on wipers in the brilliant sunshine. To signify a point a colleague's 807 has all the same maladies my 407 had. Ball-joint snapping trash can.

Used to be a huge fan of Pugs and have owned some belters, just couldn't bring myself to buy French again after that heap but then Aspman does have a point. Cars are getting far too clever for their own good these days.

I have a Renault Modus for a while, after scaling down from an original Scenic. Loved the Scenic, hated the Modus! Passengers felt sick in the back and you had to take the bumpers/valance off to change the headlamp bulbs!

Got rid of it and bought an Octavia, then my current Fabia.

The 1.6 Turbo engine powering the 56+ Mini Cooper S is a PSA affair, and has a fondness for timing chain problems and coking. I think the same engine went in to one of the Pug GTis with even worse results.

Worse than the 1.4 Tsi Twin Charge engine?

My 1.4tsi twinny is a peach, no oil use, in fact just no issues full stop

and it goes like a stabbed rat :)

Car might have the odd rattle

Non........Ils ont utilisé pour être. Mais pas plus

Google translate peut être?

Worse than the 1.4 Tsi Twin Charge engine?

No I don't think so.

There are several reports of timing slipping, chains going completely but mostly its the "death rattle" which if you react to it and get the tensioner and chain done won't lunch your engine.

The 1.4 tsi is probably worse than a rover k-series
