LED showing gear is use stopped working on Fabia automatic

I have a Fabia Skoda automatic, about 5 years old *bought second hand. Today I got into car and found the dashboard LED showing which gear is in use was not working. Just  displaying black and yellow bar mishmash of lines like bar code stripes. Anyone else had this - it is an easy fix? (everything else seems to be working OK.)
