The Million Dollar Question

Featured Replies

Okay, recently won some money on the football, Thanks Mr Hill ;)

Looking to finally lower my little furb from its current 4x4 state. I do 100 miles a day to get to work and back so want something thats not too stiff and thats why I'm considering the springs and shocks as they would be more comfortable and still provide an amount on lowering, looking at the Vogtland 25mm drop set from DPM.

However everyone raves about the vRS on coilovers so i thought id ask this question yet again as its kinda suited to my needs. Coilovers im willing to stretch to the FK highsports at £385 but no more than that from DPM.

So Damain if you're about or anyone with an input it would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers.

Springs

If you do 100 miles a day you will be visiting a chiroprachter (sp) after the first day if you go for FK coilovers

Fk coilovers are notoriously harsh, id go springs and shocks, personally id probably go for AP shock and spring kit :) will be nice drop and a nice drive

AP stuff is great I like it... i may have mentioned it a few times in the past...

I dont want to sound like a broken record!!

If you can manage to stretch to £400 for AP coilies go for it they're great.. Otherwise go with AP spring/shocks, best quality/value on the market IMO..

I see you've got yours on 25mm/30mm any pics by chance?

I'm tempted by the AP coilies because everyone raves about them, whats the ride like? My drive to work is motorway then a very fun drive down the A84 from Stirling to Killin. If any of you are ever in and around that area of Scotland i highly recommend it!

Eibach pro kit springs will probably be enough for what you want

+1, albeit on a 1.9TDi PD100 Elegance. Good combo from AP IMO.

If i was going to go for springs i'd do shocks as well as i have the money there to do it. Only decision now is AP S&S or Coilies as everyone goes on about them and its only another £15 than the FK's

If you like the twisty bumpy B road stuff then go for the AP S&S, everyone goes on about coilies because they live in towns and want to slam it flat, not drive it. You need suspension TRAVEL for bumpy B roads with precise control, coilies take away that vital travel and are much better suited to flat tarmac. Personally I'd fit the Eibachs together with the best shocks you can afford, a RARB is useful but don't set it too stiff or you'll be losing the rear over the bumps.

Edit: Don't forget to do the front bushes, it's essential, more important than a RARB.

Get the AP suspension kit and at the same time spend a bit more to get a RARB, perfect handling for every day driving and longer journeys

I've already had my front bushes done recently. Ill probably go for the AP S&S then and a RARB

Im in the same position regarding what to go for. Has anyone got a picture of there car on the AP s&s 30mm kit with 17" wheels on?

What is an upgrade to the AP s&s kit with regards to keeping with a spring and damper combo????

And pics to show the results of the drop plz.

Next in line would be weitec shock and spring

Then above that kw shock and spring

Then above kw you could get bilstein. But no point on a fabia imo

I live in the middle of nowhere much of my driving is on bumpy, sketchy B roads.. The beauty of adjustable coilovers is the ability to alter the ride height to suit the environment in which you drive.. I've yet to find a road where my coilovers have ran out of travel, and on roads where car being thrown around on bumps I'm glad to have them..

Coilovers are more for looks imo.

Coilovers are usually set once and thats it, what loser goes around raising and lowering them?

Trust me you would be having a far far better time than you are right now on a matched spring and shock setup.

Coils can be good but you need them set up properly at a reasonable height and you need them to be adjustable dampening / rebound. A non damp / rebound set is always going to be a best guess from the manufacturers.

I don't think i would ever go for coilovers again imho, matched shock and springs kicks non adj coilovers ass

Johno you keep popping up just as I think i've made a decision. Jase, AP's are adjustable though are they not? Actually have no idea what to do now haha! The drop provided by the 25mm AP's does look about right for me though and i can almost guarantee that coilovers will neved get adjusted again once they are on so the extra £170 odd doesn't really seem worth it tbh

Adjustable height not adjustable dampening / rebound....

Coilovers are for 2 type's or modder, the hardcore who spends thousands on a proper awesome setup for a performance motor / track weapon. Gets it fully setup by a pro

Or the 'show goer' member who wants a cheap way to slam their car into the ground. And looks are all that counts (ride is a secondary thought)

If you are neither and the drop you get from springs and shocks is acceptable the ride on them will be way better than coilovers set at the same height :)

Cheers Jase, Decision made. Ill spend the extra cash on some detailing stuff for when the better weather comes around! and maybe a RARB but depends what the damage is to my insuance. They're only wanting an extra £19 a month on top for lowering it so we'll see!

For a daily I'd go with Eibach springs on standard dampers/shocks and also change any bushes that look tired. Should improve things no end while still maintaining the ride quality. RARB is also a good shout on the Fabia. Both springs and rarb are on my to do list for this coming summer lol.

I was of the opinion that if you left the standard shocks in then they wouldn't last as long as they would always be under some sort of compression due to the lower springs? Might also bottom out no?

Yeah stock shock now especially how old the mk1 fabia is are passed their best! It makes no sense just fitting springs

Haha, they are height adjustable, the adjustable dampers are about £200 more.. To be honest bud if your happy with the drop from the 25mm AP's then go for them they'll see you right..

Don't judge me Jase.. :hi:  I just like being able to adjust if i should ever change my mind.. And although the non-adjust damper setup is not perfect, It's still a massive improvement over standard..

Thanks for the help everyone, not been very active to be honest just lurking in the background taking in information haha! Only had it since August and its completely stock at the moment. Whenever i get the chance ill get the front grille surround off and colour code that. Order a splitter from seat and get a rear arb. Then its remap time! and also maybe an alloy refurb along the way...
