Steel wheel with 'max 50mph'

How does this steel wheel differ from any other steels? Like why is it recommended only 50mph whereas 'normal' steels are not.

I asked my skoda this when my car was being repaired after an accident ( was running on the spare for about 2 months while the insurance got its act together) they said the spare is used in other models and therefore they all have the sticker on incase the other model doesnt have the same size other wheels. In the case of the vrs the steel is the same size and therefore has no reason to be restricted.

Not sure a policeman would agree though should you get pulled at 70, but thats what i was told anyway.

Not sure what you have got on your car but it could be because the steel wheel has a different tyre size fitted than that of your alloys. Nothing to do with the actual wheel itself but more to do with the combination of wheel and tyre sizes.

Ye its the tyre that is only rated for 50mph. So if you were doing over 50mph + had a blowout.. the tyre company would not be liable.. and if you had a crash at over 50mph with a space saver on.. you wouldnt be insured

Usually they are only a 100 section tyre and smaller than standard (hence the term space saver) if I ever have to use them I always make sure to swap them onto the un-driven axle to prevent damage to the drivetrain. Also the load on the rear of a fwd car is nothing compared to the front so you can forget about the 50mph ... Just watch out for a bit of extra oversteer!

You could have two front tyres just above the legal limit. Would you really want to put a spare with 10mm tread, maybe a slightly different pressure/grip characteristics alongside one of those front tyres and then do 70?

It doesn't, if all your other wheels are steels and the tyre size is the same, no problem, remove the sticker.

On my octavia It isnt a space saver type spare wheel its a standard steel wheel with a standard tyre on it (same as a lower spec octavia) im guessing the 50 mph sticker is on as a warning as  when its fitted to my car the other standard alloy is a 18". mine is a h rated spare which is safe for speeds up to 100+mph. I agree the space savers should be limited to 50 mph as they are no wider than some bike tyres.

If the steel wheel is the same size as your normal wheels and the tyre is the same size and speed rated similarly to your normal tyres I would just take the sticker off. Otherwise you have totally different grip and handling and the 50 mph limit should be adhered to. The steel wheel itself will, almost certainly, be one that is fitted as standard to another model or a lower spec version, unless, of course it is a space saver.

Ah my bad assumed it was a space saver you were refering to not a full size steel spare :D

Ye as said full size spare steels or tyres arent restricted to 50mph

The sticker on mine came off when I was jetwashing it ;)

Yeah It is a standard size steel 16x6 I think. 205/45/16 continental tyre.

My oem wheels are 17x7 205/40/17. So just because the steel is different to my normal wheels basically.

My steel spare has a continental sportrack 2 or 3 on it ... a good tyre

the 50mph is due to the wheel bolts.alloys and steel wheels usualy have diffents studs/bolts/nuts .

so its to stop the wheel coming loose I believe

Tightening the bolts correctly stops the wheel coming loose.

Allot of makes I know have different nuts for steels /alloys

Some use different shammfers for different wheels. Also different torques for different wheels

But that point said. Ill be going over 50 if I ever use my spare haha

It's your funeral, but unfortunately it could be someone else's as well. I am sure that insurance companies and the police look very carefully at the circumstances of accidents where the car has a wheel/tyre fitted that is not the same as the others. Handling, in all its forms, is severely compromised when you have a different sized wheel/tyre on one corner.

I would think the bolts for the alloys are the same ones used on a OEM steel spare other wise you'll have to carry a set ( 25 ) different bolts just incase you have to fit 4 spare wheels.

VAG wheel bolts are the same for Alloys and Steels :)

It has been discussed many times, and I'm still not sure if a definitive answer has been found.

 

Is age got to do with it?. I have a 'w' rated Michelin Pilot Primacy XSE tyre the same size as the rest, but it was made on Week 35 of 2004. In saying that, when the car and tyre was brand new, it still would have the sticker on!

My spare is a 16' 205 45 16 with a Conti tyre that came with the car (same size as the rest) but still has the big yellow 50mph sticker.

VAG wheel bolts are the same for Alloys and Steels :)

cheers. I wasnt sure but I know that landrover amd toyota have diffent nuts for different wheels. Aswell as mini's

a steel wheel wont make your car handle differently when it uses the same sized tyres

same tyre on spair as on one of my rear tyres. And same size as all the tyres and on car. I dont intend on doing and laps of bridgestone with spair wheel fitted. It must be because as stated the normal fabias have different sized wheels.

On my 2005 Fabia VRS my steel spare wheel uses the same sized tyre as the alloy's on the road, but the steel spare wheel is more narrow.

The steel with it's tyre fits flush with the top of the well it is stored, whereas when I place an alloy road wheel is much higher.
