Squeaky Vent Surround

Featured Replies

On a cold morning the silver vent surround on the passenger side squeaks until the car's up to temp and the vent heats up - presumably expanding and closing up any tiny gap.

I'd like to remove the surround and set it reseated with something to try and stop it squeaking - was thinking a little dot of silicone grease?

before I go at it like an idiot and try and lever it off I wondered if anyone else has removed this surround before and can give me a heads up on how it's attached

cheers,

Chris

I thought it was just me being paranoid - glad others have come across the same problem as I often think I'm just being paranoid!  I've had this before several times and I used a small amount of glue with a (very fine nozzle) and gently prised a small amount in behind the vent.  Just make sure to wipe away any residue. Solved the problem.  I'd worry about taking the surround off in case it made it worse

I had something similar with the centre air vents. I used some spray furniture polish into the gap around the vent.

Six months later the chrome surround started to crack all by itself and the chrome began to peel off!

I think that was due to the silicone in the polish.

It's fixed (replaced) now, but I wouldn't use any silicone lubricant near it again.

FWIW, the vent is made by Johnson Controls. So it's just another bought in part for Skoda. Johnson Controls make dashboard fittings for lots of makes of car.

HTH.

Better idea, beats taking the vent off. Cheers

Thankyou to the OP (original poster) for bringing this up.

I didn't think the air vent was the cause of the dashboard creaking that has been driving me mad but now I have a silent car.

It was obvious on dismantling that the garage had realised the vent was the cause as they had filled it with a silicon based lubricant in an attempt to stop the creaking.

They have tried twice but never told me that the vent was the cause.

Removing the vent is very easy!

1) remove the passenger side dashboard cover (opposite to the fuse panel cover on the drivers side)

2) hold the vent flap position knob with your right hand and put your left index finger through the small space behind the vent and whilst gently pulling with your right hand your left finger eases the vent out of the duct. It comes away from the left first/

3) remove the lamp cable by inserting a very small flat blade object as shown below to release the clip.

The chrome bezel is held on with four clips, one is a different shape and is obscured slightly by a brass coloured spring fixing.

This fixing can be prised away slightly to help unclipping.

I tried a few remedies but the solution for me was to use silicon sealant between the chrome bezel and vent assembly.

refit and wipe away surplus silicon, leave to set before refitting and check vents flaps move correctly.

Enjoy the quiet.

Yip. Agreed it is the black plastic trim on the front of the main vent housing. Put my usual foam tape in behind it. Sorted. Originally I had put tape round the outside of the main vent housing which worked for a while but noise eventually reappeared. Just for the record the chrome bezel separates from this black trim and I put a bit of foam tape behind it too for good measure.

My p/side vent does this too,but its intermitent and usually only from set off in cold weather or till the engine and car interior warm up.

That's exactly the way mine was. Surpringly irksome. If it squeaks again the whole things getting siliconed together permanently.

It's the one disappointment with the Superb, the numerous rattles. Both my Octavias were fantastic by comparison. Pretty easy and cheap fix though and well worth sorting out though as there's no other car out there that gives me the same mix of virtues and feeling of satisfaction.

Mine only does the vent squeak thing about 3 times in every ten run outs, the condition of the roads in my area is diabolical, must say though its the only rattle in the car,and like you,i love my car and its multi-role flexibility and overall build quality.

thanks for the info on this problem its driving me nuts I will give this a go at weekend

I'm beginning to think this is more to do with the chrome finish strip that runs across the dash. It's funny that none of the other vents make a noise. Mine still squeaks in the cold mornings even though I've put foam tape all round it.

Absolutely agree with Stinker. The rattles & squeaks really put me off...any of you've had any rattles from B pillar vents? I can hear something from Row 2 but just can't find what it is   This is slightly off the topic but my cupholder is another one....the cover/door is pretty bad with rattles. There is a bit of movement of the cupholders but not sure how this can be tightened or screwed together. My plan is to take it to the dealers as soon as I have a list full of cabin rattles/squeaks  :p  I hope this is covered within warranty.......is it?

Yeah should be covered alright. Can't see why not unless there is obvious evidence that something was physically damaged by force. The first visit back to a dealers is often with squeaks and rattles !

The front passenger vent and the dash chrome strip are both now squeaking on ours. Driving me potty.

The dealer removed and replaced the long silver trim above the glovebox on my Superb after sitting in the passenger seat whilst I drove, no more squeaks!

I've noticed these squeaks are back again in mine in the last few while just as the weather has become colder (nothing during the summer) so too much of a coincidence not to be at least partly due to temperature changes

Right, that's interesting, so does it just pull off retaining lugs or something; it's not bonded with anything? They really are bloody annoying, I know that. And they just need the smallest amount of pressure on either of them to stop them squeaking too.... Grrrrrr!

Ah, not sure, he found the same as you, whilst I was driving he was prodding and poking at different bits of the dash, after a few minutes he said "I think I've found it" as he held his finger on the silver trim.

We returned back to the dealers,I got out and he drove it into the workshop. 5 minutes later it was back, with a few greasy finger prints on the dash but no squeak.

He mentioned that he'd "popped it off and back on again".

I was that relieved I didn't push for more info!

Quiet so - good decision! LOL!

Daft question time! My Superb has started rattling around the passenger vent now it's really cold, it also appears to be a bit lose in the bottom right corner?.  The car is 14 months old so in Skoda warranty, will the dealer be able to fix this under warranty?

Yep, certainly will....

Sorry but I think the real answer if my experience is repeated is no. Or yes for a short time until the silicon spray they squirt into it wears off.

I have given a pictorial and detailed post of how to fix this previously.

They also lied about the cause telling me it was a bracket behind the dash that needed to be re seated away from an air pipe, I noticed something wet looking all over the vent as I left and on inspecting found the only bracket that could be seen was not adjustable at all.

Well the vent got fixed.  Now I have a rattle that's appeared from the dash trim strip!!! I took it off and the rattle stopped.  I've bought some felt tape off ebay, as I can't be bothered faffing about taking my car in for such a simple fix.

Does anyone know how to remove the long chrome strip from the front of the dash? Two years on and it's still squeaking and, oddly, it's noticeably worse when the passenger seat is occupied too!
