Using an sd card in the bolero the songs do not play

Featured Replies

I have tried sd cards of various sizes. On the very first trial some mp3 files could be listened to. After changing the other files to mp3 they did not play. The original files could be played even though they had been deleted from the card and also would play when there was no card in the slot. Any help please?

Reformat the SD cards to FAT32 rather than NTFS if you haven't done so.

Hmmmm, how strange.

I think I just transferred windows media files to the card and they play fine.  Sadly they ended up within several folders rather than one big folder so random play is only within each album!

If you put one song in the root directory, when you play that one you can select shuffle and it will shuffle from all sub-directories beneath it, hence randomising all songs on the card.

This sounds like something to do with 'X Files' and not mp3 files! ;)

And now put that in words of one syllable and in English!!

At last a man after my own heart.

Not everything can be expressed in such a way. Including, ironically, your own post. ;)

I can assure you, though, that Weasley's post is definitely in English.

When you say "After changing

...", define how you changed them?

Top tip. I shall make use of that.

Stupid question, I know, but what's a root directory?

Think of it as the topmost level that you can see - ie the 'C:' drive and not 'C:/docc'

Is no-one capable of explaining what all this techno-babble is about?

Root directory?

The 'C:' drive and not 'C:/docc' ?

None of that is English to me!!

I fear, not only are WE showing our age.......it's painfully obvious also.

I didn't think I had an SD card problem before, but now think I may have, as in not getting random playing of ALL its content.

My son, a 'network' engineer will probably be asked to fix the problem, but I'll be none the wiser afterwards because he is way past teaching 'pre-schoolers' like me.

One is not allowed to suggest such a thing, now go and sit on the naughty step :notme:

I'm going to try and explain it in simple terms. On your SD card I presume most folk have artist folders. In these folders you should have the albums of said artist. All you need to do is put one song of any artist on the SD card itself without it being in a folder. Using your computer just drag and drop any single MP3 file onto the SD card without putting it any of the folders. (When you look at the contents of the SD card on your computer you should see a lot of folders and this one MP3 file.) Put the SD card into the Belero and play this one MP3 file (it may start playing it automatically). When this song is playing, press MIX and the unit it will play all the other songs in all the folders randomly.

No. There is no evidence to support this. This vigilantism looks quite unpleasant and confusing to new members of the site, particularly when you are talking about them. If you suspect the return of a particular problematic individual, please report their post and it will be investigated.

Blimey Horacecoker - I am even more confused now.

Think I will keep on burying my head in the sand.

Directory is the correct term (in file-system parlance) for a folder. The root directory in this context is the top most "folder" in a hierarchical organisation of folders on a particular SD card. This is where you would be if you opened up the contents of your SD card in windows explorer and didn't descend any further into any other folders.

Sorry Nick, still none the wiser.

Expect Graham will be the same.

Thanks for trying though.

PS: your new car looks great BTW.

Thanks :) . Maybe I'll have a think and have another go at explaining it later. Maybe a screenshot / diagram is what's needed? :)

My method:

I go to My Music and choose an album.

I open the folder for that album, and highlight each track and transfer each of them to the SD card.

I then choose another album and do the same.

At the moment I have about 12 albums on my SD card.

Sometimes all the tracks show in numerical order and play numerically, so each track 1 then onwards, other times it plays each complete album. I like the first way as it gives a bit of variety.

On the SD card there is only a long track listing, no folders etc. It is simple to do and simple to understand.

Think of the SD card as a big box.

You need to put your songs in the big box so you can hear them in your car. You can put all your songs in the big box, or you can put smaller boxes in the big box and put your songs in the smaller boxes.

What songs you put in each small box is your choice:

They can be songs by the same singer. They can be songs from the same CD (or vinyl record or 8-track cartridge or cassette tape). They can be songs of the same music type (e.g. Acid Punk Jazz in one small box, Early Byzantine Church music in another small box).

If you have all your songs in the big box, the Bolero will allow you to listen to them randomly.

If you have all your songs in the little boxes, the Bolero will only allow you to listen randomly to the songs within each little box.

If you have all your songs in the little boxes, but also put at least one song in the big box (i.e not within a small box), by playing that song (the one in the big box by itself) and then selecting the MIX function, the Bolero will randomly play songs from all the little boxes.

The small boxes can also have smaller boxes within them, but there is a limit of 8 levels of box that the Bolero will read.

We call the big box the ROOT DIRECTORY.

We call the little boxes SUB-DIRECTORIES.
