1999 octavia cold start problem

Featured Replies

Hi all. I recently bought '99 Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI, and since the first day I'm having problem when starting it in the moring. It takes too long for it to start. I have replaced coolant temperature sensor and changed glow plugs but still same. I recently read a post saying that its usualy pump timing. Thats why I timed my pump using vag-com app, and following this tutorial:

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-scope/TDIGraph.html

After I did this still nothing. Maybe I did somethig wrong since I couldnt find skoda in the graph list, and I was selecting Golf AGR/AHF/ALH>4.99 since my engine is AGR.

At the first photo is the setting before I played with it

and the second one is the one after setting it.

Hope someone can help me find the solution.

Thanks in advance!

Have you checked that you are actually getting volts at the glow plugs when the glow plug light is lit on the dash?

If not then check wiring, connectors and glow plug supply relay.

Thanks for the fast response. Well I have noticed that my glow plugs aren't getting volts in the morning, but I read somewhere that relay supplys the glow plugs only if temperature is below 5°C. Where I live mornings are around 7°C. So when i disconnect water temperature sensor I get 12V on the glow plugs, and it turns off after about 20 sec.

bit hazy but look at the fuel temp I think the sender (in the pump) alters the timing  there is a repair kit    it's under 3? tamper proof bolts

I didn't understand where I need to look? English isn't my native language, therefore I hope you could give me little more details. Thanks.

I think it's under the cover in pic1.       pic3 is the fuel cut off solenoid  ---  do a search on Fred's---http://forums.tdiclub.com  ---  you should be able to check the fuel temp with your Ross-tech gear

Thank you cheshire cat I will do a search. Do you know how can I check does the sender in the pump you mentioned, alter the timing? Thanks again.

Another thing I noticed today is when I unplug coolant temperature sensor my skoda starts rapidly. As it is new. I got that coolant temperature sensor from eBay. I checked it with my ohmmetre using the table below i took from ADBCD.

So to me it seems it's not ECT? Any ideas?

fuel temp should be readable with your vag com gear    those values "sound" in the right order but not sure   you don't say what you found with your ohmmeter   some sensors (mainly French cars do work the other way round  increasing resistance with higher temp (PTC) )     check you have the right one  for your car  NTC as per your table------ new parts may still be faulty (especially if it's BOSCH Shangai Div :-)  )

Thanks again for your replay. I forgot to give you any values, sorry for that. When I was measuring temp sensor, outside temperature (I was outside) was 10.5 deg. and  I mesured 3.3 k? witch was decreasing due to the fact I was warming it while holding in hand. The sensor I bought is 059 919 501 ELTI Made in Luxembourg - writen on it and its green.

The factory sensor was 079 919 501 B ELTI Made in Luxembourg (blue).

Here is another photo I took while measuring with vag-com

Hope I did the right measurments :)

I saw that injection quantity was 1.0-1.2 and it should be 3-9? Also Cold start valve 2.8% and should be 3-70?

Thanks

It was starter the whole time. I changed the grafit contacts that conects to the rotor and its starts great. It didn't had the nessesary speed to start the diesel engine. Something to do with compresion i guess. Now works great. Thanks
