Why is Skoda going to make a bigger Yeti and not a smaller baby Yeti?

Surely boot size depends on circumstance. If I've needed more space I just put the rear seats down. But what do folk put in these cavernous boots? (other than holiday luggage,or the shopping once a week)

That is very true Anzio.  Normally the teensy tiny boot my Yeti (now even smaller with my thicker winter spare tyre down there) has more than enough space I grant you for day to day duties.  But when I do go away with four people and their luggage, then ten to one I will need my roof box... or my trailer....  since I do NOT like to pack vertically so that I can't see out the back window.

I dunno - I've seen more than one Ssangyong Rodius! ;)

The Juke is hideous.  It is a lesson on over styled pap.  We had a look at a cashcow when we went to see the Yeti and it had a high spec and was cheaper but the interior felt a class below the Yeti.  It was a lovely colour though. :)

Agree on everything said above, including that about the cashcow up until the new model.

I think the Yetis now behind the QQ in that regard.

Overall I find this thread really interesting in regards to the sales on smaller crossovers.

In the "Skoda" Class it shows that a lot of +'ve 2013 sales have gone on newer models.

On that basis what happens with the F/L yeti and the Qashqai will bear watching.

It could be argued some of theupwards sales are driven by "how new" the cars are?

It was a lovely colour though. :)

I've exercised all of my psychic powers but just can't determine what the lovely colour was.... :-)

Do tell.

Renault Captur vs Skoda Yeti: one possible answer to the sales numbers is that if you go into a Renault garage, how many models will you consider buying? [Captur, maybe Magane ST]

And in the Skoda garage? [Yeti, Octavia, Citigo, Superb are all considered near the top of their respective groups]

If you are a patriotic Frenchman, really what would you buy from Renault? ;)

A French racing bleu beret with a go faster Gordini white stripe and a Renault badge on it?

.......  Fine let's say they make double at £2,500 per car (which is highly unlikely for the brand).  Now let's assume they sell more cars than the Hyundai Santa Fe at 20,000 a year - DOUBLE its sales - again I'm dubious about them being able to sell that many.  That's £50,000,000 profit.

Now with a mini SUV let's assume they sell 70,000 a year (putting them in number 5 spot) and assuming a magic factory appears somewhere to make so many and they make the average £1,250 a car I assumed above (based on 5%).  That is £87,500,000 profit.

OK Johann, I totally agree your logic there. BUT now factor on top, you only have the capacity to build 20,000 more units per year. 70,000 is just a dream until you can bring an extra factory on line. Which option would you choose then?

That is the missing factor in Johann's equation -First fund and build a large factory and employ a workforce, then you could build 70,000 mock Mokkas and if they sell realise the revenues he forsees. Once you have paid for that investment then the profit per unit might arrive.

To think we have come to a time when people are waiting nearly a year for a Skoda (I don't mean anything bad by that).

I agree, if the limit is the production, rather than the orders, it makes more sense to sell more expensive, higher margin things.

I agree with that.

BUT that is sort of my point too.  VW's priorities with Škoda is NOT what Škoda's priorities might have been had Škoda been on its own...  But in saying that there would have been NO Škoda had VW not come into play. Oh well.

Škoda has the customers, they can make the right cars (apart from the cars no-one seems to want, like the Roomster and normal Rapid) so they just need the capacity in their factories. Had they done decent advertising all the time and had the capacity to make 10,000 Yetis a month instead of the current 5,000 I'm sure they'd have sold every single one. But because they seemingly are happy with this tiny factory only drip feeding the world with 5,000 Yetis a month they can in turn do no advertising as they cannot make any more cars...  Doh. This is a lose lose situation in my book for any meaningful growth. Again blame squarely on the shoulders of mamma VW alas.

These are the sales figures from 2013 in total for these segments:

Look at the pitiful sales in the large SUV sector.

In total Škoda made just over 60,000 Yetis. But look how many Capturs Renault have shifted in its first year of manufacture: over 90,000!!! With Nissan shifting 109,000 Jukes, a 100,000 Dusters getting homes, nearly 72,000 Mokkas sold and Peugeot shifting over 61,000 of the 2008 (also its first year of manufacture).

Why on earth would Škoda want to make something bigger than the Yeti and sell what, maybe 10,000 of them a year when they could make something in the Juke class and probably sell 80,000 or more of those a year?

Or will the Yeti II be made smaller still?l  I hope not. I don't want something much bigger than the current Yeti. Yes a bigger boot but just add say 100mm to it no more. I don't think I'd want a Snowman as it will be too big. I certainly don't want a micro-SUV like the Juke et al.

Are these UK only sales or international?

Are these UK only sales or international?

It is the total sales for Europe.

Are they looking to sell into the US market perhaps?

It is the total sales for Europe.

Then it really ought to be taken into account how some of these numbers are generated.

It could be far less about car appeal and far more about what market penetration each brand has into each European market.

But Skoda are not designing cars just for the UK.

Lead times seem to have improved, 7 weeks from order to delivery for my FL Yeti.

I ordered my Elegance with some specific options at the end of January and it's being built this week. So I expect delivery in around a month. Not quite 7 weeks from order to delivery but definitely nowhere near a year!

Anyone with access to that sort of magic would be better off conjuring up the money directly, rather than bothering with the factory.  100% profit!

But as others have said, unfortunately it is the big flaw in your reasoning, however much you try to make light of it.
