GFWC MK1 VRS Estate!

Featured Replies

Richard is indeed correct.

16V is 1390 cc

8V is 1397cc

Taught me well you did. :D

My concern is, i personally am not a fan of the 16V, but if i say to buy the 8V, then i am encouraging the purchasing of Fantasy Green Fabias. which puts me in bit of a dilemma.

I'd prefer the green one to be honest chaps! I just thought the lower mileage one that's close AND cheaper and doesn't have s dent in both the doors would be the easier option, despite the V5 error saying that it's an auto!

whats your plan for it tho?

if its a quick spin then go cheap, but why is it cheap? a more economical, more powerful 16V engine with lower mileage cheaper?

if its to keep, then go with what you want from the car

Gearbox is out of the estate.... Was difficult. But it's out. :)

The steering rack ball joint is fooked, so going to have to chop it off and replace it. I absolutely hate them.

I've also still got to remove the 5 speed gear linkages, which are behind the exhaust and then behind the heat shield... Not fun.

Going to tackle that tomorrow, and order a new end for the steering rack!

is it just the outer track rod ball joint?

Yeah, the OSF track rod end.

Thought I should post a picture of the car, don't want an empty page :p

Not sure how to remove the flywheel .... Hmmmmm

Can't you lock the crank?

Shame you weren't closer you could borrow my crank locking tool for changing the cam belt. That ought to do it

Easy to do, put one of the gearbox bolts back into the block, then hold a pry bar into the flywheel teeth up against the bolt you've put in. Then crack the flywheel bolts off. Same technique for tightening up, handy if you have a second person to hold the bar too

As Taylor said, you can lock it.

We did that to get the other one off.

Thanks chaps... I made a little tool, using a bolt and a double ended ring spanner :)298FB19A-AFC7-4CFC-9D7C-7B9BA543DE1C_zps

Here is a video of the issue I'm having. It has this much movement even when the pressure plate is all torqued up.

Record the number of teeth it rotates, there is a safe range of movement based on number of teeth it rotates. I don't know the number though, certainly looks sloppy mind.

Odd, was almost rigid when it came off.

Could be wrong, but just doesn't look like it's on 100%

I'm the proud owner of the FGF from Shaftesbury now haha

I got a second hand flywheel and fitted that, it had far less play.

The box was all ready to go in, but I simply couldn't lift it and get it on the car, literally impossible. So had help from Dan and Rob on here who came down on a Sunday snd helped me get it in.

Once the box was in I carried on putting the car back together.

I fitted the standard Vrs brakes 288mm so desperately needed 2 wheels to clear the brakes before I could put the car on the ground.

Found some on eBay but still looking for something more permanent.

Once the wheels were on the ground it became apparent that the PAS had stopped working, it worked perfectly before so I was extremely confused. But after much debate on here and talking to various people I tried a many number of different things but decided to change the steering rack to a VRS rack.

This fixed the problem which made me incredibly happy.

Broken rack and Vrs replacement next to each other

The speedo does not work because the speed is taken from a sensor above the diff on the 5sp box and the 6sp box cars get the speed from the ABS sensors, but hopefully will have this fixed soon.

Didn't take any pictures but just got in from bleeding the brakes, sorting out the blowing exhaust. Fixing an annoying rattle which turned out to be the dog bone mount a little loose, so tightened it up.

Then I put a new air filter and oil filter on and changed the oil.

I really need to run it next to someone else's fab as I still think it sounds rough :(

The car is almost officially a VRS estate. The only thing missing is the black head lining bits ... Which I already have, so just need to fit.

Also have a HUUUUUGE update happening this week if anyone wants to have a guess as to what it is :)

Here she is, waiting to come out to play
