Cone filter

Featured Replies

Is anyone running a cone filter? If so what difference does it make? I've Hurd it can damage your engine not sure how though. Any feedback would be appreciated as in thinking of putting one on

Only the filters that are oiled could present a problem to the maf I believe.

On a diesel it's debatable whether there are any performance gains to be had by using a cone filter. Some of them do give a nice turbo flutter though

I thought the general concensus was that OEM filters were more than adequate unless going for more power?

Yes as Lee says the standard paper filter is sufficient.

Heard from a reputable tuner that the oem filter is more than enough for oem+. Cone ones also suck in more hot air than cold and can also suck in small particles that smash up yer turbo :)

I really didn't know what to expect when i clicked this thread after reading the title!! :o

That's the only reason I opened it. Bitterly disappointed :(

jabbasports cone in a box is the answer.

been cleaned and reoiled three times by me already - no MAF issues at all.

"Come filter"?  Isn't that a condom? :giggle:

If it's only acting as a filter I think you might find yourself in trouble very soon

Very true :D

Some people re oil K&Ns etc and over do it a bit and then the maf/map whatever can get a coating of the oil on it that affects the reading it gets, but no harm to be had.

Over the years various mags and companies have done tests on filters, usually proven that the standard filter has slightly higher filtration properties, but provides more resistance than most after market cones.

PiperX ones always perform well on the performance tests, K&N ones i seem to remember usually do very well on the filtration but are usually bottom runner performance wise.

A honda S2000 cone filter is a direct fit on the fabia. Thats an OEM spec filter, so isn't oiled, isn't 'long life' and will need replacing after 6,000miles or so (thats my interval, skoda reckon on 40K but **** that) but offers good filtration etc.  that will get you the slight induction noise you get and cone filter looks.

Don't expect it to be like a N/A petrol though and scream through the cone or a turbo petrol and be fluttering its chuff off it will be barely make any more noise than standard.

Since putting my huge cone filter on last week my MPG has risen by over 4-5. I wouldn't believe this either but it's true!

Also the cone does add a lovely growl to the old oil burner. Gives it a nice deep grumble which matches the performance nicely.

Mine gives the induction roar when it gets to 2500 rpm. Gets quite loud actually teamed with the 0 box exhaust

Intake noise sub 2000rpm is loud! It's like I've a thousand people under my bonnet just sucking air in all at once. (Honda s2000 cone)

A clean OE paper filter will filter more air than the car can use (in std form) so unless it is mighty modified you are waisting your hard earned... unless you are only doing it for more induction noise

You can hear mine sucking like mad at around 2000rpm but it has a change in tone at 2500 and gets alot louder like vvt on petrols

Make it as loud as I can

Run a decat and mufflerectomy too :) sounds awesome after a remap I couldn't believe how much it changed the sound of it

Have the muffler ectomy, just thinking wether to hollow my standard cat or get a dummy one made up

I'd say go dummy only because on petrols when they're hollow the sound tinny and raspy but don't know on a diesel if you'd get a sound like that. I think the jet engine idle and growl when your going would drown it out probably

Probably another trip to hiQ mr tyre (powerflow).

The entire purpose of this otherwise pointless thread was just murdered by a well-meaning mod with Aspergers, try a lighter touch Giz, you have the modfingers of a rapist.
