Phone connection Columbus

Featured Replies

Just picked up my Yeti today and all is well, almost. How do I pair my phone with the car?

I press "phone" on the Columbus unit and nothing happens apart from the radio muting. I've searched through Maxidot and there's nothing relating to the phone?

I suspect there's no Bluetooth module fitted.

Damn and blast if that's the case.

This is NOT a new car by the way so I haven't specified any options.

2 tests:

Does the steering wheel have a phone button on it?

Is there a black box under the passenger seat?

If the answer is no, you don't have bluetooth.

No & NO. Bugger. Ah well other than that all is fine.

Is there a black box under the DRIVER'S seat?

No.  :'(

Ah! Sorry. I feel your pain...

To be fair it isn't that much of an issue. It'd be nice but the number of times I use or answer my phone whilst in the car is minimal. I have an LG HFB-500 solar Bluetooth kit that tucks away in the top corner of the windscreen, this will come back out of the drawer I've just put it in  :giggle:

I presume this must have been a non-factory fit Columbus?

I presumed NOT. It's come from a Skoda dealer and I can't imagine the previous lady owner retro fitting the unit.

Having a Columbus is no guarantee that you'll have Bluetooth, both were available as separate options.

Having had three Yetis since December 2009 and all with Columbi as factory fitted factory options, I must have lucked in then.

I never specified or paid for Bluetooth as a separate option to the Columbi and all three have paired to my iPhone for hassle-free handsfree.

Isn't the provision of bluetooth more to do with the specification of the car (L & K, Elegance) more than the provision of the type of "radio" unit?

Ah, good spot. Two Elegances and an L&K. I was thinking laterally that a Columbus having a 'Phone' button was automatically Bluetoothed.

The same thing fooled me 4 years ago, as the Bolero also has a "phone" button, and I thought mine should have had bluetooth, but then checked in more detail.

Bolero on an SE F/L has Bluetooth now - advised by dealer on collection that this was an addition to the F/L. And it works with my old BT mobile.

I've just been caught out with this with our new 1.8 TSI Outdoor L & K.

It has the Columbus system with phone button, there's a phone button on the steering wheel but neither does anything.

I now find out that I should have order the GSM Bluetooth option at £120.

I'm left with buying the BT kit (VW part 3C8035730D??) at £180 unless anyone knows a cheaper source.

You don't need the GSM Bluetooth option on your L&K. Check Bluetooth is enabled and pair your phone using the menu in the maxidot. The phone buttons will then work when your phone is paired.

Have a look under the drivers seat for a black box. That's the BT module.

No box? Look for connectors (plugs) to see if the wiring is there.

If you have wiring, you could get a BT module for £60 or so.

If you're not sure if what you see, take pictures and post here.

Bluetooth is standard on the L&K - it should be there.

I've checked and there is a silver box bolted to the floor under the drivers seat towards the front with a black plastic cover  and connector going into it.

However, I've turned on BT on the phone and it can't find any device nearby.

There is nothing on any menu on the Columbus to turn on BT. I've read the Columbus and drivers manuals and neither gives any help on getting BT started.

What's the trick to doing this?

That silver box is the BT module. So that's a good start.

Could you see a long part number on it in bigger letters / numbers (something like: 1Z0 035 729 B )?

This will help us help you with any potential issues or problems.

I suggest that you contact a local Briskodian near you (your location as 'England' doesn't help us offer you any assistance but this owners map might help you contact someone near you) as your module may be broken hence why it is not working.

In theory, your phone should detect the module and try to pair with it. Unless your module is Hands Free Protocol (HFP) and your phone Remote SIM Access Protocol (rSAP) or vice versa.

Just a thought, are you making your phone visible while you are trying to connect it, on my phone in the BT settings used make phone visible (only visible for 30 sec) and it connected and asked for the code.

This is from the manual (you may have already read it)

Connection of the mobile phone with the hands-free system

In order to connect a mobile phone with the hands-free system, it is necessary to
connect the telephone to the hands-free syst
em. Detailed information on this is
provided in the operating in
structions of your mobile
phone. The following steps
must be carried out for the connection:
– Activate the Bluetooth® in your telephone and the visibility of the mobile phone.
– Switch on the ignition.
– Select the menu
Phone - Phone search
in the information display and wait until
the control unit has ended the search.
– Select your mobile phone in the menu of the units found.
– Confirm the PIN (as standard 1234).
– If the hands-free system announces (as standard
Skoda UHV) on the display of
the mobile phone, enter the PIN (as standard
1234) within 30 seconds and wait
until the connection is established.9)
– After ending the connection, confirm in the information display that a new user
profile was created.
If no more free space is available for creating a new user profile, delete an existing
user profile.
If you have not managed to connect your
mobile phone with the hands-free system
within 3 minutes after switching on the ignition, switch the ignition off and then
again on. The visibility of the hands-free system is established again for 3 minutes.
The visibility of the Bluetooth® device is automatically switched off if the vehicle
starts off or if the mobile
phone connects to the device.

I just get confused by all the different part numbers available, there's a bewildering amount to choose from  :wall:

No idea if this will work? Or do I need units beginning with 3C8035.......

Sounds silly but have you gone into the setup menu and turned BT visability on?
