New car has arrived! Should I fit a tuning box?

My new car is ready to collect!

Octavia 150ps elegance TDI, DSG, estate. Should I fit a tuning box? DTUK have a great proposition: Standard 150ps can "allegedly" be increased to 190-200.

Questions:-

1) Will it void the warranty? they say not; but its a big gamble on a 26K new car

2) Should I fit before the car is run in? 1000+ miles

3) will MPG be effected? Seems like owners struggle to meet manufactures figures, let alone with modification.

 

I'm curious, has anyone fitted a DTUK box to a 2013 engine? if so, do you regret it? Did it work? have you had a service since fitting? any drama?

I'm sure you'll get plenty of feedback on this, however here's my humble opinion on your questions;

 

1) Not necessarily although if the engine went pop, it would be a tussle between the Skoda warranty and DTUK warranty as to who would pay for repairs.

2) I wouldn't fit it until the car has done a good 5k miles to be honest.

3) It can improve the MPG although not sure the gains are likely to be as big as promised.

Oh dear god. Skoda will run away from any warranty that the tuning/extra go could possibly affect.

Get your asbestos knickers on and stand by for a possible flaming.

Oh and to preempt the flamers.... If you wanted 190 to 200 bhp you should have bought a different car.... Think that sums up the basic argument.

I think you would be wise to listen to JamesVRSmk3 & Telboy5 in regards to fitting a tuning box.

 

You may want to fit it, however you need to give the engine a chance to bed in and make sure that all is well with the car as a whole, because as these two guys have said SUK will very likely refuse to honour any warranty should they find out that a tuning box was involved,

 

Patience is a virtue & it will ultimately reward you.

1) Personally I would wait to see if the car meets your expectations/needs in standard trim.

2) Run it in, explore its performance, then make your decision

3) depends to some extent how you then drive it. As a general rule up to a point where the car has 'too much' power e.g. over 300ps then an increase in power and particularly torque can lead to an increase in mpg because cars are at their least efficient when accelerating. More go then allows you to accelerate to the target speed quicker so the time its at its most inefficient is reduced. It also allows you to pull a higher gear for a given speed compared to before a tuning box or a remap was fitted, so lowering the revs needed and fuel used to do that given speed. This of course means to get the best mpg you have to be a good boy and not use all that extra grin factor.....or you just say sod it and have the extra power and fun, or abit of both......... Your choice.....

Personally I wouldn't, I'd enjoy it as it is, they're good cars.  

 

I have to agree with neiln, for me, it's important to buy a car that meets your needs rather than one that you'd need to shape to be content with. I'm happy with my VRS, it meets my needs and is exactly what it was sold as being, a fairly sizable family car with decent pace when needed.  Still, people on here seem to be happy with their cars once they've approached audi, BMW and merc money by adding tuning boxes, pedal boxes, lowered springs, upgraded air filters, spacers and tints and heaps of other stuff so who am I to argue?

Just spoken to a vw dealer and a skoda dealer this week who are looking to stock our products won have both said "off the record" that they cannot tell that a box has been fitted.

Most of the guys on forums that say they can tell or either anti box, or have never actually had any experience of a box.. On the flip side how many members on here have had their warranties voided as their dealer have been able to see the residue data left behind after removing a box......

So as long as you remove the kit before heading to your dealer then you won't have any issues, and our advice is to wait until you have 1.000 miles on the clock

As above, that comment makes it sound like they're encouraging their customers to commit warranty fraud.

What's wrong with people wanting more power than the car offers out of the box? All DTUK are saying is that they haven't experienced any problems with people having warranty refused. And let's not forget SUK will do anything to void a warranty if they can.

Yes tuners do advise customers ro remove their box, or reflash their cars back to standard via their bluefin or various hand held devices before heading back to their dealers...

Why so you think super chips promote their bluefin, Revo their Sps etc?

Anyway getting back to the subject matter, as I said earlier if you're looking to tune your car via any means. My advice is to leave it until you have 1.000 miles on the clock .

Of cause you will inform your insurance company, I suspect that not only SUK would run away from any claim but so would your insurance company.

I had a box fitted to my mkii vrs with no issues, and no problems when removed prior to service at the dealership.

The box is now fitted to my mkiii, with no adverse affects. One of the technical team at work used to work for VW and he says that the amount of tolerances that are built into the cars means there should be no issues with one of these boxes fitted.

Yes, the fuel economy is affected slightly, but that could just be down to me pressing the pedal harder! Did manage 48mpg on a 500 mile trip with the box fitted for 200 miles of it. Got another long run this weekend with box fitted for it all - will compare mpg.

I like the car without the box fitted, I love the car with it fitted - but I respect anyone who doesn't want to fit one

OP, get one, fit it then, enjoy it

My mark 2 feels flat as a fart when i take the dtuk box off it now, I had it off yesterday for its first service and for them to look at a minor grinding noise. I only took the box out and not the wiring loom and it wasn't mentioned at all when i picked the car up.

Mine was fitted with less than 1000 miles on the clock. Town driving returns around 38 mpg, motorway returns 48mpg, tank top up method not on board computer. Both of which is better than I got with my mkii either with our without the box fitted.

Now just to disable the sound generator

Is that really a company stance? Hardly top of the league in ethics is it.

If you want one, get one. Personally, if the car wasn't quick enough, I wouldn't have bought it.

 

Whatever you think of tuning boxes though, this irresponsible statement absolves DTUK of any liability, encourages paying customers to commit warranty fraud and puts the onus back on Skoda if anything goes pop as a result of fitting their box.  Of course, it is then future Skoda buyers that will then foot the bill.

 

A responsible company would simply say yes, your warranty will be invalidated by fitting the box but we think the benefit will be worth it and that no problems will arise.  This statement speaks volumes about the ethics of this company and for me, was reason enough not to buy one.

I try and avoid these type of threads but this statement is just outrageous.

 

Skoda warranty is quite clear about this. Part of their terms and conditions is explicit, and states (talking about claims they will void):

 

> Damage resulting from the use of non-original replacement parts. Items which are excluded from warranty cover include, but are not limited to:

- Components, equipment or software (including any unapproved modifications to engine management software) which are not part of the vehicle at the

point of original manufacture.

 

I think what you are proposing is fraudulent.

Get it, it will transform the car. I have had 2 now and then new one on my 184ps is awesome. 230bhp and it retuned 59mpg on a run the weekend (and that's VCDS corrected mpg not standard dash mpg)

You just can't ask for more - and if anything does go wrong which I doubt it would any more than having the box off then just removed it.

Just think - how long to you actually "give it some"? For me it's every now and then and I enjoy the extra power when I do.

Performance enhancements work well when you have respect for the tuning and don't drive it like you stole it :-)
