I would still go for the golf r, I've driven both in my job and imo the golf is better all round. i think we all no the quality is better with vw. just my personal opinion 

I did watch it, I like the styling of the golf better, it's real world performance is probably better than the leon too, but 4k is a decent saving.

 

With the S3 starting at 30k if I was in the market for that type of motor I'd probably be looking there too.

After adjusting for spec differences and taking into account discounts, the gap is over £5K and with 4.9% PCP for the Seat and 6.6% PCP for the Golf, the Leon makes a strong case for itself. The Leon also gets the adaptive damping and progressive steering as standard. 

 

In truth tho', if I was looking at the Golf R, I'd almost certainly end up in an Audi S3 and if I was looking a Golf GTi PP I'd be mighty tempted with the Seat Leon Cupra. And even then my spec'd Golf GTi PP is still working out at over £2K more than the Leon Cupra 5dr 280.

 

I've not driven either the Golf R or Leon Cupra, but I have driven a Golf GTD and a Leon FR and whilst the Golf had the edge in terms of interior, the difference wasn't £2K's worth in my opinion. As good as the Golf is, VW do seem to be getting a bit carried away with it's pricing.

I like the look of the Leon and the previous FR was a cracker. Seat would be my choice, no question, and saving £4k makes it sweeter still.

yes, the Golf is awd but if you watch the video, you can't really accuse the Leon as being a scrabbler!

I can see the sense with the Cupra being lighter, more agile and arguably more of a design statement but my gut feeling would take me to the R. More effective on the damp and wet roads we regularly drive on in the UK, the better long distance choice in terms of comfort and it'll handle the stage 1 remap better that I'd be slinging its way. (4.5 secs to 60 where as the Cupra would probably struggle to better its standard time by much) ;)

I agree, when you start modding, i.e. maps the golf is going to be able to put the power down much better. Like said in a previous post being an apr dealer at my place of work I've seen both mapped and i have to say the golf handles the map much better. Just my opinion. 

Missing with almost every Road Test & Review is the person driving the car saying just what Tyres are fitted to the car being driven.

& did they even check or reset the pressures before driving the car and reviewing it..

 

Simply because some VAG cars come on pretty unspecial tyres,

some seem to have more of a bias towards economy than spirited driving 

and have the VAG cars ESP & XDS, XDS + and Haldex doing more than is necessary as they are being tested as to when they have different tyres fitted.

 

Some VAG Brands choices of tyres as fitted as standard are near hopeless in real life on real roads in real weather. Spring/Summer/Autumn. ie Possible Damp and rainy weather.

Well IMO.

Obviously at UK NSL's they do the job,

But then so do the ECO tyres fitted to most cars with 105 ps of power.

My VRS, S3, S4 and S5 all came with Conti's. Sh!t tyre!

My RS had Bridgestone tyres which were better.

Most people I've spoken to recommend Goodyears on their AWD S and RS models.

So I agree with the above comment. VAG dont choose good tyres from factory, especially in their performance models it would seem.

VAG, like most manufacturers, choose the tyres that maximise their profits!

 

Tyre manufacturers trim profits to increase sales.

 

I'd say it's all down to simple economics.

Car Manufacturers could more often offer Tyre Choices as Options.

 

But that requires admitting what comes fitted as standard is just so so.

More profit for them in offering other upgraded components that cost them little more than 

the components they would be fitting anyway.

Or activate some electrics that are already there, fit switches,

or the MAP is different for all of £700-800 on the same mechanicals & ECU.

Some Skodas with faults from the production line are pulling Left as Delivered to UK Customers.

Skoda then Approve changing Dunlops or Continentals to Pirelli tyres.

But fail to say what the issue was with the Dunlops or the Continentals.

 

But more important, they do not say why some cars they build and sell into the UK are Pulling left.

I think it may be the other way round, e.g. tyre company's want manufacturers to fit their tyres as standard as they know most users will simply replace the tyres with the same make once they've worn out. The tyre manufacturers offer seriously big discounts to the car manufacturers to select and fit their tyres in the knowledge that they'll recover much of the discounts when drivers replace like for like.

 

As drivers I don't think we benefit from this deal!

A lot of people (not car people like on here), go on the principle that if the car manufacturer has fitted them as standard then they must be a good tyre.

Just goes to show what four wheel dative can do to a car's handling characteristic in a negative sense as well as the positive. I guess it's the extra weight which has an influence over making the r a lazier drive than the gti pp or the cupra. Additionally, this review shows how good the electronic diff Must be on the gti pp and cupra if these cars are showing up the r.

the e-diff is an exceptional bit of kit IMO but given the fact that for the majority of the year, our UK roads are wet or at least cold/damp then my vote would still be for the 'R'. Stage 1 remap the cars (which is a given with me) and the 'R' will take an even further lead in being able utilise all of its power and torque. Also, my daily drives rarely take place at high speed and on track, which s here the e-diff starts fully coming into play. :)

& the XDS or XDS + if used really hard on the likes of a track gets the brake system too hot and just shuts off (Disables its self)

until the Fluid/discs/calipers/system cools down.

 

& that does not need that very extreme driving to get to that situation.

This can be a common thing with VAG cars that do not really let you switch off/Inhibit all electric aids like ESP/TC/XDS.

 

With UK NSL's and decent tyres on a VW,SEAT, Skoda, Audi you are unlikely to have the EDL/XDS/XDS+

even coming into operation nipping the inside brake, where there is wheel spin being detected, and then put drive to the tyre with traction.

If the road/condition, (cold,damp,wet) are the way that one front tyre is loosing traction and the XDS/EDL is kicking in,

you are as liable to loose traction of both fronts that do the steering, braking, providing drive wheels/tyres and slide off the road anyway.

Just reviving this thread,

because if anyone is looking for a bargain in a Hot Hatch,  there are some real bargains deals to be had with 

slightly used Seat Leon Cupra & Cupra 280 at Seat Dealers around the country.
