George. Just do it. As for "front drive scrabbler" pff.

I've also driven both, and there is no way the golf is worth the extra, unless you're into launch control starts and driving in snow. Also, it's not an electronic diff! It's not xds, it's a hydraulically activated mechanical LSD with electronic control as the marketing speak would put it.

The nurbugring option are now available to buyers. Brembo calipers, and grippy tyres. Ultimately, both are stupidly fast, way beyond common sense speed on UK roads, so frankly it's about the badge and which one you prefer the look of.

So i take it you are happy with it.

Pics please in the other 'New car' thread. or are they somewhere else.

How much does the Pack add to the basic price.

Driving both cars on a test drive basis will never give you the real day to day, overtime experience.

So it will always be a subjective judgement,on the day, that suits your pocket and your normal daily use I guess.

George's daily use in Scotland's Autumn and winter ,with snow and ice may lend itself to a requirement for a 4WD.

However, he does have the Suzuki 4wd as a fallback

Icy this morning, Black Ice, and cars sliding off the road,

all kinds of cars slide off the road on black ice including part time AWD's.

None of the cars mentioned here are much different once the Snow Falls and the roads are closed to anything but 4x4's.

They mean 4x4's with clearance to get through deep snow and keep going.

So as good as these cars are with the right tyres in the wet and cold,

and old Fiesta bought for the cost of 1 months lease might be a better option.  JMO.

Winter pack is around nd a grand new, but mine was used and specced into it new. Equivalent golf R spec was other side of £32k

Sorry, you meant the wheels and brembo pack. No idea, haven't looked. Std brakes are fine.

How much does the Pack add to the basic price.

The sub8 pack adds £2025 which gets you the massive 370mm front Brembo 4-pot setup, side skirts and 19" alloys. :)

Thanks for that. So the sticky rubber is excluded then.

Thanks for that. So the sticky rubber is excluded then.

Just checked with tyres is £2485.

So that takes the new price to £29695 in base colour.

Some £500 cheaper than the base Golf R if my calc is correct.

iirc they are something like £460-480 as a separate option.

Not that much of a saving when spec'd up then.

I think the specced up leon is even quicker than the golf, unless driver physics intervene.

It's still a £5k delta whichever way you look at it.

So back in the real world... £26,380 for an 'R' via Drivethedeal for example, against £23,819 for the standard 280 and £25,631 for the sub8 280 from the same broker.

There's no way id not pay the extra £749 to get the 'R'! For 90% of drivers over 90% of the roads in 90% of the different weather conditions you are likely to encounter in this country the 'R' is simply going to be quicker. Add in the fact that the cabin is a nicer place to be and the residuals are stronger and its quite a convincing ownership proposition imo.

And I haven't even touched upon how the two would cope with my likely mods... an IC upgrade, exhaust, intake and stage 1 map... 0-60 in around 3.7secs with real world useable power. For under £29,000. Yes, im quite a fan of the idea. :D

What are these prices, 3 door manuals in Red / Blue Metallic or something.

Lovely thing is you can get a ex Demonstrator Seat Leon Cupra 280 DSG 5 door with leather in a solid colour for £22,000-£23,000 Today.  (Dealer speced Leather etc)

That tells you it all,

Seat Leon Cupra 280 is lovely nice and great,  and like many Seats, not many will buy them, and bargains can be had.

They are always going to be in demand by some, 'i want one of those'.

as a Bargain,  'Much Cheapness'. Much speed,  Much Chavness!

(I am a Chav.)

2014-2015 Golf R will be that same 'I want that car',  but it will always cost more to buy used.

George,

The purpose of the various recent thread entries are simple and relate to the Nurburgring specced Cupra, Now available as "New" compared to the Base Level Golf R .(No discount - Manufactures price).VW and Seat Configurators used.

The rest you have quoted above is perfectly correct  and I for one completely agree about demo cars, spec and retail prices and cheapness to be had.

Basically to point out that the "price delta" mentioned is not £5.0k but in fact less than a £1k for the aforementioned versions.  .

So again it will boil down to what the punter wants for his or her, Cash - PCP or whatever.

However, if you go back to the Autocar test article( on the dry track) and the model /spec used, then the differential on New Prices is as mentioned in my introductory entry(and on video) more like £4k.

Simples!

PS.

Might also add the in the Base Golf spec, that there a few goodies that the Seat doesn't have as standard spec.

The cars are so close on speed that to me it comes down to what you personally want from the vehicle.

They are both capable of being driven so fast that at 80-90% you'll be a liability to other road users or breaking various laws.

The amount of time you can really feel and get close to the limits is minimal.

Personally, I'd buy the golf R every time (assuming this was my only car/daily driver) because I like year round usability.

I can already get my Fiesta ST sideways on a mildly damp road with less power.  Which I love as a bit of fun, more exciting than four wheel drive.

OK, the SEAT has a fancy diff and better set up.  But high power front drive cars just don't do it for me.

I know people tend to get excited discussing if you really need 4WD, but in my opinion it has clear benefits.  And the Golf R is a better, more rounded every day car.

As much as I'd enjoy the SEAT more from time to time.

Others also agree.

I'm not sure how you work out a £750 delta, spec for spec when I sat with two dealers it was about £4600. If, like me you'd prefer a slightly used ex demo with the initial exponential sting taken out of its depreciation, you will have no chance of picking up an R for less than £25k. If when eventually you get one, it's going to attract for more unwanted attention from other road users, and from those that would like to use the road unlawfully.

As Richard said, most of the time you don't "need" 4wd (otherwise an evoq would be better than most cars, right?) so I can live with fwd and winter tyres. The fact it looks only a small step up from a vrs means no one gets p155y when you overtake them, and no one wants to nick it. Bit of a Q car, and for me one of its great attributes.

A Porsche Macan every time before a Evoque, they really are a poor product from Land Rover, a styling exercise to far. A Freelander does it better. Well IMO

Check out the configurator for Leon 280 plus pack against Golf R basic model.

Cheapest Golf R on VW website demo model is £28500. Hence the greater gap appears to be in depreciated sales value(from new) at dealers, hence your generalizes £5k  differential  l believe .

By the way I do have a Golf R mk7 ,purchased in August (Brand New-pre-registered) @ slightly over £5k off, which was cheaper than a Leon 280 PLUS PACK today.

It's also  at a pretty high spec.

I just specced both up to what I wanted. It may be closer of course otherwise.
