Wrong Oil

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 2006 Petrol Octavia II vRS.  Just had it serviced and found they used a semi-synthetic oil.  I have been through the forums and know the correct oil to use.

I have no way of getting it changed for a week or so but have a long journey this weekend.  Am I putting my engine at serious risk of damage or would it be ok for a couple of weeks?

Cheers

Sean

It will be fine.

There are thousands of cars serviced using the wrong specification of oil every day.

I'd still be keen to get it changed out as soon as is possible though, if for nothing else to ask the garage why they used the wrong oil and for the satisfaction of knowing their attempt at cost cutting has in fact just wiped out any profit they had on the job.

VW 501.01 is recommended?

What did they use?

Thanks for the reply Silver1011.

I will get back to them as soon as I can and get it changed.

I am on an annual service plan and only cover about 7000 miles a year.  It only gets driven had when I am in and that is not very often :-( so I am not too worried, just a bit annoyed.

Will be fine as long is ity's not 20w-50.  You'll get away with Xw-40.

Should be minimum 502.00 on fixed interval.  504.00 is cheap enough these days to make it the "safe" choice.

Your comments put my mind at ease but I think I will get it changed as soon as I can.  I don't want any unnecessary wear or damage for the sake of a few quid.

I meant you'll be fine until you can get around to changing it.  Say 5000km max.

The main issue is that semi-synth won't be able to handle as much temperature as full synth so it will "go off" quicker.  I'd expect the workshop to change it out for free as well as they've obviously stuffed up.  Pay then for a new filter to make it a win-win as the short oil change period will have given the internals a bit of a clean.

You should be fine with semi synthetic. If you are worried about it, just change to the right stuff for piece of mind. I had the same dilemma with my gear oil recently and changed it for the correct oil after about 20miles. I am happier now knowing its the right stuff in it.
