XP, and now printer....

Featured Replies

Now on my 7th printer in 10 years. :wall:

Is it just me, or are printers basically just crap?

Best one has been the Kodak. Lasted a whole 14 months before it decided to start throwing up no ink messages when it clearly had ink and thus refused to work.

Took it back last week under the 'swap with no fuss' guarantee that I thankfully took out, and swapped it for a Cannon that only ate paper, not print on it.

Today I have an HP .

Kodak have pulled out of the printer market btw.

My HP is ok.

Canon MP780 9 years old and touch wood going fine.

Lasers last longer.

Inkjets in general are a bit crap.

As I've said plenty of times, get a cheap laser that will cope just fine with intermittent home use and then use a photo printing service if you need colour prints occasionally.

I hate printers

If I want to print some thing of no importance they work just fine, when you need a document asap the ****ting things don't work.

Manufacturers support of drivers is shockingly bad as well.

hp 3520.

24 hours in, and it's STILL working!

I head to Argus, and buy a cheap printer with a replacement cover. Costs less than similar printers elsewhere. But when it goes wrong ( usually within the guarantee period), you get a new one either free or at a lower cost.

Don't believe it!!

This one has started playing up now.

Has become  increasingly difficult to actually turn it on today.

Pressing  the button this evening , and nothing is happening at all.

48 hours! :wall:

Unbelieveable...almost. :@

Stop dicking about and get a laser  ;)

Stop dicking about and get a laser  ;)

Yes yes yes yes yes, I bloody know, but WHY should I have to?

Is there no manufacturer out there that is capable of making a normal printer that can actually PRINT? :wall:

Up until now, I haven't been able to justify the relatively high cost of purchasing and running a laser printer as it wouldn't get used very often, and just how unreliable are they too btw?

Whatever, number 8 in ten years now beckons. :@

inkjet printers are built to a price, unless you buy a business class device then they do not last long.

Years ago my dad bought a Samsung CLP-300 colour laser printer, and today its still going strong. The toner cartridges last eons, and he has only changed the black one twice since he bought it. He has changed the colour ones just once, the toner is more expensive than inkjet but in comparison he has spent a lot less over the years.

Forget inkjet, its technology from the 1990s and buy a modern eco friendly laser.

OK.

I give in! :wall:

There's obviously some evil inkjet spirit up there that's got it in for me.

Here you go - lasers from £30. Google a couple of them and see how much replacement toners will cost.

http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Photo/cat/Printers/subcat/Laser-Printers?limit=30&sort=price%20ascending&page=1

The Dell one immediately caught my eye for just under 50 squiddlies, but it says MONO.

Does this mean it only prints in B & W?

PC World where I got this crock of crap from don't seem to have laser printers this cheap btw

Nearly £200 for the ink?!!!! :o:rofl:  :@

i must have read that wrong, surely?

I'm still on the canon bjc4550. Must be at least 15 years old. It may have to go if I can't find a linux driver for it. Shame, as quality is acceptable for what I need, and I still have some of the canon mega cartridges.

This explains it well - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/07/26/bofh_2013_episode_5/

"Because inkjet manufacturers are in the business of selling ink cartridges, not printers. Some inkjets are magical and will print thousands of pages without a fault while others couldn't get a test page out without jamming four times, streaking across the page and then misfeeding the output," I snap.

Buy the cheapest Laserjet HP sell, spend a tenner on a recycled cartridge after you've used a box of paper, and be happy.

Laser toner can be expensive but it does last a long time typically 1500+ pages.

Mono means black and white.

Colours are dearer to run.

I run an old Samsung mono laser, it's probably 8yr old now. I'm now using compatible toners from Amazon. I got 2 for £25 Vs £70 for one branded Samsung.

The lack of software support will kill this printer before it actually dies itself.

We get colour photo prints from internet services.

Thing with Laser, the toner can be expensive as you found out but it lasts for thousands of pages unlike inkjet which is typically at least 100x less.

Here is a colour one for £100

The toner it comes with will last you ages, and they are reasonable to replace if you buy a full kit and not individual colours.

Tell you. I would SO gladly do without completely apart from the fact that event tickets/ passes (classic car shows, NEC etc) flight boarding passes and car insurance docs. generally have to be printed off at home now . :wall:

Mono laser would do your example docs perfectly well.

Lasers are particularly good at printing text, barcodes, QR codes ect.

My HP is ok.

So is mine. Not windows 7 compatable its so old but an alternate driver sorted that.

The black ink cart is 69ml and the three colours are 28ml each. Proper carts not like the tiny ones nowadays.

Last chance on this 3rd new one in as many weeks.

Same model hp again.

Think they're getting as sick of seeing me as I am of them tbh.

So far....so good.

I've been running my new Epson WP-4535 inkjet for a few weeks now, and it seems like a pretty decent printer - I havent tried photo printing yet, but it is fast, fairly quiet and well featured. The ink costs are advertised as being cheaper than laser - we will see.

I took a bit of a gamble buying it, Epsons I have had in the past 10-15 years have been awful, although I do still own and use a Epson scanner that came with software for Win95!!!!
