Creaking dashboard from new in 3-year-old Yeti

Featured Replies

My Yeti, registered May 2011, has had an annoying noise from new.  Creak, sometimes buzzy, seemingly from behind the steering wheel.  As the warranty ends next month, I've redoubled efforts to get it fixed (earlier tries by two dealers using packing materials fixed it temporarily at best).  Latest try involved replacing entire dash panel on warranty, another fail.  Service manager drove his own Yeti on same perished road surfaces as show it badly on my car and said his did it too but much less than mine.  He says he agrees with me that the noise is unacceptable. He says he'll ask Skoda technical for advice and if nothing comes of that he'll push a bid to Customer Services for a favorable deal on a new car.   I hadn't planned to change as soon as 3 years but am inclined to accept if I can get a good enough deal, and some assurance that it won't be as bad on the next Yeti.   So I'd really like to know from this forum how many Yetis have dashboard noises.  Mine is an intermittent creak, worse when cold, associated with rough tarmac (rather than potholes).  It's OK on smooth roads.  Anyone got relevant experience, please?  If it's commonplace I might not bother to change for another Yeti even at a good price.  Many thanks for any comments/info/suggestions.   BTW, one reason you may not get good service re such faults may be that Skoda only pays for warranty work in accordance with a rigid tariff that specifies well-defined tasks such as "replace faulty part X", whereas open-ended investigations of problems of unknown origin are done at the dealer's expense.

Mine's a year old, had it from new and no creaks or rattles at all. I guess the people you need to hear from are those with the F/L Yeti as your replacement would come from that line. Seems a bit extreme to have to change cars to cure a rattle but I do understand that after three years you must be getting very frustrated.

My first Yeti had an intermittant "buzzy/creak" but only when very cold weather.

My second Yeti was totally silent , as is my new FL Yeti.

Most creaks, rattles and buzzes that have been reported actually come from the door seals. A liberal coating if Gummi Pflege especially on the top of the door flap like seal cures these noises.

Yes my Yeti is a FL and 4 weeks old with a Squeak / Rattle on the dashboard behind the steering wheel. I have temporarily wedged some cardboard between the speedo binacle and the main facia which has stopped the noises so far. I am going to monitor the success of this over the next few days and if it does cure it, wedge some suitable rubber into the gap as a permanent fix.

I'm going to spray some silicon 'dry lube' around the speedo/tacho perimeters which, when you pinch them, have a cheap creak at the mearest pressure on them......a very flimsy feel to them.

It completely undermines the previous impression of solidity

I tried Gummi Pflege having read about it here soon after purchase.  It fixed some squeaks that obviously were the door seals but no effect on noise I still have.   My impressions of the responses so far -- thanks to all -- are that the issue is quite frequent but not universal.  The creak on pinching is familiar to me, but doesn't sound quite the same as the noise that happens by itself. Maybe try some of your wedge/fixes if Skoda tech don't come up with anything else for the dealer to try.   Re the formal pursuit of redress, situation is complicated by fact that the dealer currently working on it isn't the one I bought from. So I'd have to reopen the issue with the original dealer, whose service dept frankly didn't seem as thorough in their approach to the problem.

On my 2013 Elegance the instrument 'cowls' squeak/ rattle/ buzz. Temperature makes a difference - have just found some high density black foam to squeaze between cowls and main facia as packing here does stop the noise. Had entire roof removed to stop the sunroof mechanism clattering - fortunately all covered by warranty. Must admit the unwanted noises do detract a lot from a basically good car - having said that our previous car (11 plate Golf) had hideous buzz from drivers side A pillar/ door

I occasionally have a creak but a thump stops it. I believe it is related to either the chrome rings squeaking or something rubbing underneath.

I'll live with. Better the devil you know, I say

Well I finally got 'round to addressing this issue.

I sprayed silicon 'dry lube' down the tight edge between the tacho shroud and the left side of the instrument cowling and the interface between tacho and speedo shrouds and their glass/Perspex faces.

I can now grab the instrument 'brow' and flex it with no creaks any more.

If all I have to do is reapply, say, annually, I'll be happy with that.

My 2010 company car Yeti has had an intrusivel intermittent suspension noise under sharp accelleration from new, when in first or second gear, eg pulling out of a junction, or accellerating around a right hand curve. Stops once into 3rd and is fine thereafter. When new it used to click like tightening a ratchet, this has changed over the years to a knocking noise now.

The garage has changed shocks at the rear, replaced a suspected juddering clutch, and most recently replaced the front drive shafts, even though the noise comes from the rear offside suspension!

Personally I think it is a semi seized roll bar bush, or incorrect assembly of something.

Still does the noise despite the latest expensive attempts to repair, but I have given up as new FL coming in under 12 weeks.

Sometimes these things just don't seem to get sorted, warranty or not

Update:  Service Dept has tried yet again to resolve this.  Total fail.  The service manager is now of the opinion that this issue is very widespread or possibly near-universal on Yetis.   He would not expect a replacement car to be significantly better. He's abandoned any thought of helping me get a replacement car in order to resolve the issue.  He himself just took delivery of a new one and his wife immediately complained of dashboard noise.  I asked was he raising this with Skoda and he replied that they'll see the pattern of all the attempted repairs he does for customers, which is presumably replicated across the network.

Such noises are are due to characteristics of both the vehicle and the road surface. There's a big programme of road resurfacing underway in my home city at present.   I expect this will bring more improvement than any further attention to my car.

When it comes to time to change the car, I'll just have to factor this in as counting against the Yeti.  Might not be deterred, of course, depending on the opposition at the time, as well as the state of my local roads.  Right now, every time I'm bugged by the noise I tell myself it's saving me the cost of trading in what is otherwise a highly satisfactory car.

My dashboard doesn't squeak, creak or rattle, and never has.

+1 and that goes for the 2 Yetis I've had.

Lucky for some! :envy:  Guess I'll never get to the bottom of this one.

Are you sure it's the dash that's creaking. The door seals are well known for making creaking when traversing rough ground. A liberal coating of Gummi Pfledge on the seals including the top felt seals cures these creaks.

No it's not that, thanks. I did this at the outset, as advised on here, and it reduced some other sounds which doubtless were from door seals

Likewise - no creaks or rattles from my dash - and believe me I WOULD notice if there was one - because rattles & squeaks are my #1 pet hate in any car.

I had a small one at the rear of the car but I figured out what that was and fixed it (was the cup holder on the centre rear seat - needed removing, some padding adding to stop the plastic rattling against the metal frame). It took a few days to hunt that one down with my missus driving and me sitting in various seats in the back - finally found when I noticed the rattle went away when my son fell asleep slouched over the centre seat (being used as an armrest).

And me!

Sunny days the dash expands and squeaks, the

rattle was from a cable tapping against the inside

of the dash. This is no different to any other car

I have owned.

Mines had an intermittent buzz emanating from the dash for a while. I had the Dealer look at it but to no avail. After weeks of searching and various temporary fixes I finally traced it to the central air vents. I suspect as previously mentioned heat plays a part and the two different plastic surfaces 'react' against one another.

I'll get round to a 'fix' soon and if managed will post results.

I own yeti 1.2 TSI 2012 since new and I have never heared any rattle from the dashboard (and croatian roads aren't so perfect). No rattle, no strange noise in that area, ever.

But...everything else IS rattling, creaking and grinding almost from the first day I bouhgt this car. At first each "strange sound" in my brand new car was like a knife stabbing straight to my brain. As time was passing by and I became aware that the dealer is useless, I remembered one good thing about this car -it's multimedia performance! With loud music on there is no rattle at all.

My brother has a brand new suzuki jimny and it has some rattle and creaks too. Drives him crazy!

A friend of mine has nissan qashqai - it rattles!

Seams we have to reconcile with the fact that with this new generation of cars we may have more comfort, electronics and aesthetics than we could have with their predecessors, but for our money we get less and less quality. (Sorry about my croatian english, but hope you'll understand).
