Does my Audi have a Skoda engine? - Shock Horror!

Featured Replies

Don't think I have ever heard any Skoda marketing make that claim......most of the hot air marketing comes from the Audi side of the business....."S-Tronic" (DSG) "Quattro" (Haldex 4x4).......Vorsprung Durch Technik indeed.

The sales guys definately did. Heard it when buying 4 of ours lol

  • I ran one of the first mk2 Fab VRS and SWMBO wanted to top it by buying an Audi A1 1.4 TFSi DSG shortly after their launch. So the VRS is parked outside the Audi dealer and we're talking to a suit. W

  • Incorrect. As a new dad, boot space is crucial. I'll wager any new parent or parents in general quantify boot space before a purchase.

  • > Should I be concerned?   Yes.  The car will turn up in 12-14 weeks, but the engine won't be delivered for 6-7 months.

Well, with all this banter going on, I just wish to say, I bought my Superb because I liked it. Couldn't care less where the bits come from.

Best way! Same reason I have the vRS. Liked it better :)

So my 1.2htp engine is skoda built then? Along with the pre revision 2005 1.2 triple thats in my mums polo?

Whats a 1.2 mpi in?

That'll be going in the new Veyron economy version.

That'll be going in the new Veyron economy version.

Dont be silly. Everyone knows the haldex coupling in the veyron couldnt handle the HTP 1.2. Pfft.

Amateur ;).

It's been a fantastic covert marketing plan from the suits in skoda head office, tell them its the same underneath :) well it worked ! , I'm not being disrespectful to skoda wouldn't dream of it , I've had so many from the estelles all the way to superb and fabia and octy and up to 2000 the cars where good value and well built , I'm sure that's around the time vw bought skoda out ( I'm not sure ) however over the years they have become far close in financially / price wise to vw and audi you really need to think twice before purchasing, I agree a hell of a lot of "bits" are shared underneath but and its a big but ! , they are not glued together the same as I said previously the only cars that are identical underneath are the citigo, mii and up , why because aren't they made in the same factory side by side ?, if you have top bosses in vw saying " why would anyone buy a audi instead of a skoda"! Its a marketing ploy to sell more skodas, does that mean they (skoda) are not as good ? I'd say no they are "nearly as good " , as said previous " skoda does not make engines " all skoda do are body panels and a few bits, there is no such thing as skodas anymore nor seat as they are vag cars with different dresses on , if I could choose between , octy ,golf and a3 I would go for the octy ! As its much better looking ! But would have to be a L&K to be up to the quality of golf , however its not up to me "wife is the boss " and after the ******* **** of a dealer in waunfawr that's never going to happen now I think :(

Economies of scale.

The reason the bits we see and touch are different is that they have to be. What allows for the different brands and price points is having different dealers, websites, brochures, bonnet badges, soft touch plastics, body panels, light switches and other bits.

What allows VAG to do it and to still make money is by using common parts across all brands. The bits we can't see or don't care to touch. Why have several different designs and suppliers of common components? Tooling costs a hell of a lot of money, limited production runs off unique tools means each component is more expensive. Better to have one common ABS pump, DPF pressure sensor, fuel filter housing, windscreen wiper motor etc. The list is endless.

The glues, screws, plastics and bonding materials will also be sourced from the same suppliers. The production line processes (robots and other assembly tools) and employee training will also be the same. The VW technicians at my local dealer sit through the exact same training in Milton Keynes as the Skoda technicians. There are different modules for specific elements but the core training is the same.

To say the quality along a Skoda assembly line is any different to any other VAG facility seems a little strange to me.

Well my old VRS has Audi badges on some of the induction piping of the engine along with a Seat and VW badge. The 1.8 20V engine in the Mk1 Octavia VrS first saw light of day in the Audi TT as well. Clearly the question has been written by a badge snob with no knowledge of the modern VAG group. HJs perfunctory answer says it all.

  • 1 year later...

Skoda = Seat = Audi = VW = Bentley = Lamborghini = Porsche

If you look hard you can find lots of parts-bin-bits in your Skoda that feature up and down the the VAG group range - from engines through to seat adjusters, swing arms to luggage bars and glove compartment hinges to air conditioning compressors.

I knew what I was looking for in a large, quick estate car and had narrowed my choice to the Skoda Superb simply because it was rare, cheap by comparison to other brands, quick and had a 3.6 lump in it shared by the Passat R36/CC, Cayenne and Panamera. That latter point tickled me...in a Skoda  :D

I have also found swichgear and other small trim bits on mine that also can be seen in an RS6, Gallardo, R8 and Bentley (oh yes..); and as someone else has mentioned in this thread, a good nose around underneath the car flags up bits stamped with Audi, VW and Porsche (plastic bits in engine bay on V6). Alas there is no 2.7 RS lump in the boot though...

But this is nothing new...car manufacturers having been doing this for years. Back in the day Porsche 924's ran starter motors and alternators from the VW LT van etc., Aston-Martin used Mazda (Ford) 323 rear lights on the DB7 as well as plenty of interior trim bits and so on.

So don't be too disappointed about the engine...  :notme:

I used the towbar on my skoda today, and when plugging in the powercord to the trailer, I found an Audi logo on the 13pin socket. Should I worry? :p

Yeah, take back and insist they swap it out for the better quality Skoda branded one!
