Retrofitting Variable Boot Floor in Estate

Featured Replies

Hello,

Last weekend I became the proud owner of a nearly new Octavia Estate SE. I would really like to retro fit the Variable Floor and was told by the salesman that it was possible and would cost approximately £250. I have today contacted the parts department of both the dealer where I purchased the car and another local main dealer who have both advised that it is only possible to fit the floor to the Mk2 version. Has anyone been able to purchase the floor for the Mk3 and if so can you provide the parts numbers? Also, is it possible to purchase a fitted mat for the upper floor?

Many thanks.

Pretty sure you can't in the mkiii as all the side panels are different. It was easy to fit in the mkii as you say.

My dealer spent quite a while trying to do just this for me.

They drew a blank as there is a welded in stud missing on each side unless is a factory order.

I did suggest to them they could drill a hole and put a rivnut in it to accept a bolt each side but they were getting excited about invalidating the warrantee.

To be fair now I don't have it I'm not sure it is an issue.

I'm not sure it can be done but having considering having it factory fitted on mine I changed my mind as it seemed to take off too much height and could only support a very light weight reducing the load lugging capacity far too much. It also looked and felt cheap in my opinion.

If you haven't already, I'd take a look and see if you need it. If you do, good luck with it.

It will be easier and cheaper to make your own. Two sheets of 18mm MDF, some cheap grey carpet, a jigsaw, and few kitchen unit supports should do the job. I mean to do this myself but can never find the time.

I have it and I regret getting it, don't bother...

I purchased a demo car here in Germany, the one I looked at which was supposed to be identical to the one I got (except colour) had a variable floor and this was written into the contract, when we went to pick it up there was no variable floor, this one one of many issues with the dealer. They let slip that to retro fit would cost abut Euro 800, We used this as leverage to get some extras out of them such as a ski box and bars. When we looked again the variable floor did very little apart from bring up to the same level as the boot entrance and was pretty flimsy. I think we came out a winner in this case.

I don't get the idea of buying an estate and then paying to make the boot smaller....

I get the idea of buying an estate with a flat loading platform and hidden compartments in the floor.

I've been told the VBF can't be factory fitted alongside the Canton sub-woofer.

I quite fancy the idea of making my own though - has anyone done it or have an idea how it could be done. Asking because I haven't seen a VBF in the flesh.

That's incorrect, I've got both fitted in my VRS estate.

Interesting - I've been over this multiple times with the dealer. I'm in Ireland and he says with the Irish spec the VBF cant live alongside the sub-woofer.

Not having seen one in the flesh I can't really contradict him but I'll be very interested when the car comes in a couple of weeks.

Having said that some posts above are saying the VBF isn't that great - maybe I'll go down the home-made route if it turns out not to be possible on mine.

The standard boot floor is so cheap, weak and nasty that it prevents carrying of medium to heavy loads. My floor sags, and split within the first week of ownership when my 12 year old daughter kneeled on it whilst helping to unpack shopping bags. I cannot imagine the VBF being worse, but I will make my own SOLID floor out of 18mm MDF or ply. Then I will be able to use my Estate as intended.

Ii already have the dealer supplied rubber boot mat which will help with the cutting template and cover the new floor nicely if I cannot find similar coloured carpet. I am think of making a two level floor with hinged/folding top section. It needs to be strong enough to hold 10 bags or so of ballast. With the standard floor I am afraid to insert more than 2 or 3 bags.

It is shocking that Skoda have such a crap boot floor when they sell so many Octavia's due to space and practicality.

Can't argue with this at all. The boot floor is complete rubbish. I think its 6mm particle board and will not last. Adding your own is the only way to go if you want to use your load lugger to lug loads.

I've ordered a vbf... Just wondering if it's possible to remove it when necessary?

As soo as I got mine I just dropped it to the floor and its stayed like that ever since. I suppose its pretty good to carry something heavy with as it does reenforce the regular floor well; the only downside is that you end up with a ruddy great triangular fold down at the bottom end of the boot that takes up a bit of space.

i do suspect the whole floor can just be taken out though, havent tried it though.

Just make your own like I did...

There's no way they'd have different bodies (with and without studs) just for a variable boot floor. Mine doesn't have a variable boot floor but it has the studs welded to the floor on each side:

Looks interesting - is it hinged 2/3 of the way back? How did you go about making it?

Was wondering about this too - so you can't just remove the whole thing for going on holiday etc - and if you fold it down it takes up a lot of space?

Doesn't sound too great

It doesn't take up a lot of space when folded down - the thickness of the floor (13mm?) and the rearmost 2 inches or so against the seats is sloped.

Can you share some blueprints on how to do this?

Anyone used the vbf with a dog cage?

The reason I need the vbf is to present a flat floor to mount the double cage on....if it's not level with the loading edge, the cage doors can't open you see.

Mine didn't come with one and there is little point with a cage so made a spacer from polystyrene works well and light weight.
