Fabia DIY Stealth Shelf

Featured Replies

I managed to pick up some Focal 6x9's for £20 courtesy of Gumtree. Seeing as I already have Focal components in the doors and an extra input spare on my amp it was a no brainer to find somewhere to put them in the Fabia.

I didn't want to just cut holes out of the parcel shelf as I've heard them before and it just ruins the sound as well as showing people what they can nick. I managed to find a light but sturdy bit of wood to mount them to, cut it to size and mounted the speakers in them. I then cut voids out of the parcel shelf for the speakers to fit into then drilled loads of small holes to allow the sound out.

I'm quite pleased with the finished article, the wood needs carpeting to finish it completely but that's a job for another day. They sound a lot better than I originally thought to, no distortion

nice work

How'd you excavate the back of the shelf without ruining the top surface?

This is the best/most pragmatic effort I've seen. Uses all original fixings. You might want to have a look at those side supports. At the least, consider screwing them in.

Is it easily detachable?

I marked it out with an oversized template then used a sharp chisel to remove the bottom layer of plastic (two layers glued together), then smoothed the cut with sand paper.

Thanks, it's relatively light as well. I used foam strips to distribute the weight on the side supports, I didn't want to screw it down as I would like to be able to easily take it out if needs be. All that would involve would be to detach the speaker terminals and lift it out

And here's mine (for sale btw, ready to fit using original fixings)

How much you looking at for it mate?
