My DIY Stealth Shelf

Featured Replies

I've recently just purchased my SkODA, it was abit quiet in there without a radio...

So install the crap mini disc player i've had sitting around since 2002 (the last time I had a car with a stereo!)... hey where are the rear speaker connecters.... .....where are the rear speakers?
ahh crap - no rear speakers (not in the door or even the side bits of the parcel shelf!) forgot I own the poverty spec fabia!
I know i've got some speakers somewhere! yeah yeah they're 6x9 but that'll have to do! I'm skint and I already own em!

How I installed the speaker wire and made my own stealth shelf

Remove the glove box - nice n easy!
Run the speaker cable down behind the kick panel trim with the help of a bent coat hanger...

Pull the bit of trim off that covers the sill, so far so good... poke the cable down to be met by the seat belt mounting bolt (or whatevers under there) in comes the bent coat hanger again and we're in the back, lifted that bit of trim, removed the two bolty screw cover doodahs, run the speaker cable into the rear of the car!

(sorry no pics for this - its pretty easy - use a plastic spatular / turner to pop the trim off and make sure you realign the clips when you put em back in!)

I decided not to cut up the rear parcel shelf, who wants to advertise they have an "uprated" sound system nowadays anyhoo?
So I made my own!
Nice n easy
cut some 6mm mdf to size (ideally 8mm as the screws come thru a tiny bit)

add some inch thick wood to the edges

use a router to finish the edges

cut some holes for the speakers, mount below the 6mm mdf
add some wire mesh over the top to prevent saggy holes -fnar fnar

Buy some acustic carpet (normal carpet is too tough to mould)
and spray glue the **** out of out and press carpet in as you go!

finished thing

Looks good. Great work

Looks very good, deffo a stealth shelf I'd never know

Nice effort,  I made one for my Fabia yeaaaaaaaaaaaaars ago

and I still have it under my spare bed (it is for sale btw).

No good to me now, and I'd quite like the space back.

I might just trash it and get my speakers back out of it

instead. Unless someone is interested then PM me.

It's literally ready to fit and wire in.

It is heavy though and collection would be better than

trying to post and package it.

Only problem I can see is not with the shelf. Those side pods, supports, either side of it are flimsy plastic crap. Though they could be filled with wood/mdf and grip foam or similar, I s'pose.

Ahh yes the supports, forgot to mention I added a few self tapping screws to that as it was hanging off when I purchased the car!

For a moment I thought it was a chest freezer with 6x9's

finished thing

Tada!

Looks like your rear headrests are the wrong way around?

  • Author

yeah the head rests are in back to front, good spot! Guess they'll stay like that until I can be bothered to build some doodahs like the ones that came with the original shelf to hold it down, since no one sits in the back its not a problem and it works very well!

Oh, I didn't realize you were using them to hold the shelf down. Haha
