Need Help/Advice- Remove surface scratches from Alloy Wheels

Featured Replies

Greetings All,

I bought some Used Genuine Standard 5 spoke Alloy Wheels for my Octavia over 2 weeks ago as mine came with the steel wheels.

Left them at my parent's as I work in Manchester until I could get them put on, I've come back home to my parent's after 2 weeks in Manchester, to find that my dad's cleaned the Alloys I bought but has cleaned them with the rough side of the sponge used for washing dishes, which has left lots of light surface scratches all over the alloys.

Not mad at my old man as he meant well my washing them for me, so that I could get them put on when I came back home but in doing so has caused the scratches.

Any Ideas on how I can get the scratches removed to bring the smooth finish back to the Alloys?

I have had the Alloys put on at my local tire place and the guy there suggested rubbing them down with T-Cut but I've done some research and there are mixed views on the internet of using T-Cut on Alloys, so say use it while other forbid it as it causes more damage. So thats left me confused.com

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Im in the DONT use T Cut camp. Its terrible stuff.

You need to go at them with some polish thats for sure. There are loads out there. You could use Autoglym SRP which fills the scratches, or something like Gtechniq P1 which removes them completely.

Thanks for the reply and advice BTS,

So is T-Cut generally a terrible product or just terrible for use on Alloys?

In the haste to get my Alloys looking good again, I went and bought a 500ml bottle of the Original T-Cut straight after getting the Alloys Put on.

I haven't used any yet but along with thinking of using it on the Alloys(which I wont be doing now) I was planning on using it for removing the finger nail scratches on the door handle indentations and to buff out the light/moderate scratch marks around the car.

Is it worth keeping the bottle or should I return it and exchange it for one that you have suggested?

Is the Autoglym SRP or Gtechniq P1 only suitable for Alloys or also suitable on all the bodywork?

Also will I need to protect the Alloys with some sort of Wax after getting rid of the scratches?

Apologies for all the questions but as you can tell I don't have any experience with Car Detailing or bodywork/Alloy restoration.

Again all suggestions are appreciated.

P1 is good on paint. Svend sent me a free sample and I must say I was impressed, easy to work with by hand. it shifted a kids hand print from my paint work - think it was some kinda dairy product which had etched itself into the topcoat which I stupidly left for a long while (in ym days prior to frequenting this section).

Removed the mark  without a trace/effort

I never even though about using it on alloys tbh

I used SRP on black gloss neptunes, didnt make a huge difference after two polishing sessions across all the wheels.

Next time would try the P1 its been recommend by other before for alloys.

T-Cut is a VERY harsh abrasive. I would steer clear of it altogether. There are much better and safer products out there, so yes, my advice would be to return it.

Both SRP and P1 can be used on both bodywork and alloys so would be suitable for what you want them for, again SRP will fill in, whilst the P1 will remove the marks totally, depends what you want and the thickness of your paint.

Yes you're correct a good sealant on the wheels after you polish will help protect their finish and make them easy to clean. I personally use FinishKare 1000p on my wheels and it can be used on the bodywork too and is the product I use to protect my car over the winter as it lasts up to 6 months with the proper prep and a decent maintenance wash.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for your advice Thisday, WookieeM and BTS22.

And BTS,

You've not just helped me but with your advice, I feel enlightened.

I should have joined this forum as soon as I got my Skoda, been exactly a year and I've always wanted to become a member of the BriSkoda community but one of those things thats just been sidelined unfortunately until now.

Its my 1st anniversary of being on the road and I couldn't have chosen a better first car than my Octy, hopefully many more years to go until I can upgrade to a newer model maybe even the VRS... only time and the balance In the bank account will tell I guess.

But really appreciate your advice guys.

Due to the unsociable crazy 12/13hrs shifts I work, I wont have time until next week to get around to tackling the scratches on my Alloys.

I have taken a before picture of the Alloys, which I will try to upload to show the scratches I'm trying to get rid of and will upload an after pic once I've got them looking good again. So keep a look out.

Regards,

S.Ali
