Just changed my H4 bulbs to Philips Ultra Blue Vision....nice blue/white light.... got some side lights included (free). Has that HID look now.

Want to get some Silver Vision indicator bulbs next....gosh I'm such a tart!;)

Oh not just me then.....also got the Silver Vision bulbs - looks much neater -- even if you are a tart :p

Dave,

haven't got them yet so I must be a wannabe where as you ARE a tart for having them already.:D :p

Oh...Jon has them as well.

We all know my Superb doesnt have the cooking lights, just normal bulbs, but i find them really effective compared to the lights in the old Octy, even with the uprated bulbs I had in them. Is it that they are clear lenses, or is there something else that makes them so effective? and how much of a difference would I notice if I swapped to something like the Phillps jobbies?

Of more importance is how easy is it to get to my bloody headlamps rear, seeing as how you must surely need the hands and arms similar in size to a pair of long nose pliers?

Of course, the other "useful feature" of Xenon is that virtually all cop cars have 'em. (I wonder if the Vrs estates that the Kent constabulary are buying have Xenons).

So, if you're hammering down the outside lane after dark, it's surprising how many people move over.....

Not impersonating anyone, honestly...

Well at last....Audi have finally come up with a solution...sort of.

2004 model A4's with xenon, can no longer be adjusted to continental use.....by the driver - or by us!!!! something to do with risk of injury, incorrect light setting whilst in the UK blah, blah, blah -- so anyway they have had to come up with a solution - so new I had to speak to Audi Technical this morning to organise some for one of my customers who is going to France on Saturday AM -- the new wonder system ?

Stick on reflector's !!!! -- apparently specially designed to cope the riguors of xenon light output -- they are self adhesive plastic that just level the beam off -- so can be fitted and left on for UK use if the driver is likely to go abroad on a regular basis.

I think the Superb's have clear lens's ?? -- if so these reflectors would probably do the trick.

Part Number :8E0998981 available to order from Audi dealers -- for just under

I seem to remember that conversion for continental driving its a dealer job for a hour or so's labour for Superbs fitted with Xeons, this is out of the question really for me as aI am doing a couple of trips this month and another in November.

 Hmm. Not a Pentium IV lit car, but a Xeon one.

Sorry mate, just having a hard day at work and need the laugh! ;)

I thought I have just read somewhere that BMW (OH GOD NO..) have just made their xenons fully continent adjustable by means of a simple driver operated button.

Andy

A lot of cars have an adjustment facility, either from a dash button, or a lever under the bonnet (my Omega has a lever on the back of the headlight).

My Skoda dealer told me that the Octy would have had one, but all the Xenon gubbins under the bonnet didn't leave enough space to get the lever out to the fresh air! Anyone who's got xenons will tell you how little space there is behind 'em.

Are we ever going to have closure on this topic? Is there a solution for Skoda owners other than a trip to the dealers?

There are two solutions:

1. Sticky tape. Worked for me on many occasions, no melting or anything.

2. Get 'em adjusted once (as suggested by Skoda) this gives you vertical dip, rather than left hand dip, Works fine, and is totally legal, but might not suit everyone.

Now, for

If you did attempt to do it yourself -- which I don't advise -- make sure you disconnect the battery before you start, the light's look similar to Audi A6 light's -- A6 lights have to be removed to do the swap, which then involes the beam pattern being reset via the 5051 diagnostic tool.

So you need to have two things done:

1- Change something mechanically with the lights (??)

2- Change the beam pattern with the 5051 thingymejig.

So my questions now are:

1- What phyically needs changing that also requires step 2?

2- the 5051 - what is that? a derivative of the vag-com ?

Considering my dealer didn't really know much about the availability of xenons on the furby and I don't know if the modules and headlight enclosures are identical between the furby and octy, it looks like I'm stuffed on "getting the dealer to sort it out" :(

Right - correct me if I am wrong, as you all know, off to Spain 17th of this month to live, just come back from the dealers with a grubby piece of paper in me hand, explaining how to change the zeons for conty driving, basically you disconnect the connection by the lights, remove headlamps, and change position lever from "A" setting to "B" setting??????? confirmation please.

Yep, that's it.

Getting the lights out is the main problem. I think it's a couple of hour job.

And so do you need to tweak anything electronically with a diagnostic tool like was suggested ???

I'm totally confused now!

Maybe LadiLoki's faxing suggestion was that grubby piece of paper...

If it's not too grubby, any chance of a scan and post ?

I suppose I could ask my dealer and see what he says

Will scan and send soonest

OK, I have now managed to get my hands on the technical manual which describes the steps involved in changing the beam pattern for conti driving.

AFAIK, it does NOT involve the use of reprogramming the ECU or other module.

What is involved is changing the position of a mechanical lever to move over the deflectors or whatever is required for conti driving.

However, this lever is located inside the headlamp unit therefore requiring you to remove the bulb to gain access to it.

So, it is just a matter of flicking over a lever, but in order to get at it, you need to do all the dangerous light bulb removal stuff.

I have a photo of the manual describing the process, and I may post it later on this evening when I get back home.

I also phoned up my dealer enquiring about how to sort out the conti driving issue (without mentioning how it is "officially" meant to be done) and they initially didn't know, so said they would find out. They rang me back 10 mins later confirming it just involved moving a lever, but they would ask to do it themselves because it involves taking out the light bulb or whatever. So, their version matches the info I found out on my own (with the help of some inside people ;) ). My dealer said it just takes 10 mins (??) and he'd be happy to do it FOC, so I guess I'll get him to do it as I don't fancy the responsibility of a) breaking half a grand's worth of light bulb or B) killing myself, regardless of how stylish the manner may be!! ;)

So there, I declare this thread can be closed

Xavier

EDIT: Apologies for all the bold and italic stuff, just wanted to make it really, really REALLY CLEAR ;)

Right chaps.

Here is the adjustment information taken out of the Skoda technical manual and is what the techie guys at Skoda use as reference

Due to the nature of this document and the potential danger of the technology involved , I feel moraly obliged to put in a disclaimer. No matter how eager you are to sort your lights out for conti driving, I will not be help responsible for shattering your half-a-grand-a-pop xenon light bulb ;)

Oh, and I believe the pictures refer to the Octy, but the same should apply across the range of cars fitted with Xenons.

DISCLAIMER: The following link refers to how to change the xenon beam pattern alignment for continental driving. It is highly recommended that this adjustment is done by your local authorised Skoda garage / technician. On NO account should you try this at home. The high voltages and extreme temperatures produced by Xenon light bulb technology can be fatal. You have been warned.

Bla Bla Bla.

Now enjoy :D

Note: file is an adobe acrobat pdf and is just over 1MB.
