Number plates

Featured Replies

Dealers are prone to putting plates on with their dealership advertisement.

Has anyone ever asked if they can provide their own i.e custom, legal and minimalistic.

No I do not "have a big chip " on my shoulder, and I don't see where you get that idea from.  I just cannot see what all the fuss is about having less than a total of 2 square inches of advertising o

The idea of advertisement on the plates does not worry me. It is small. What I don't like is the stickers slapped onto rear screens. First job on getting home has been to remove these.   Colin

Err...........why?

I agree, the dealer ones with advertisement are vulgar. Legal eu with a coloured rim look much better. I use a chap on eBay £10 a plate, free delivery any legal and non legal design you want!

I don't much mind but generally if someone wishes to make me a commercial proposal to carry their adverts I will consider it :notme:

i.e. without the dealers name on it.

The answer to your problem is on eBay item #191106989786, if that's what floats yer boat.

I just cannot see what all the fuss is about having less than a total of 2 square inches of advertising on the front and rear of a car, especially as part of that is a requirement in Law, namely the plate manufacturers name and postcode.

No, I mean plain, 340mm long, plates with nothing but the reg number and the legal details (bottom right).

There is no dealer or makers name on my Audi plates. There is though the legal wording bottom right. Been running with these plates on my Audi since 1998 which has passed all MOT's with no comments. I therefore suspect while it might be THE law, THE law do not seem bothered.

Hmmm...I appear to be getting a lot of Like This messages.

It maybe that your old Audi pre dates the rule that the plate should show the maker and their postcode-you used to be able to get plates made at will but as part of the rather feeble anti cloning measures you now do. As a suzuki Vitara owner -assuming that is more recent than Your Audi- do the plates show the maker-often but not always the selling dealer?

There are legal plates, then there are plates created by the dealers with extra advertisement. There is a difference.

You could have some legal plates made up, with the minimum required additions, once you know what reg is being assigned, and take them into the dealer for fitment during PDI. No issue with that I can see, if you have a reasonable dealer.

In 1980 I got my local accessory shop to make up reg. plates for my new Fiesta and the dealership fitted them without any issue. In those days that particular company had really ugly advertising plates.

Nowadays the legal requirements with regard to plate maker, post code and legal coding is different and totally plain plates are not allowed on new cars. My Yeti plates are standard dealer plates, minor advertising which is fine by me.

On selling dealer plates may indicate the car has not been pranged and therefore the dealer plates could be seen as positive.

The idea of advertisement on the plates does not worry me. It is small. What I don't like is the stickers slapped onto rear screens. First job on getting home has been to remove these.

I would not think removing a dealers details is a prisionable offence. They are too busy with speed trap vans.

I recall watching one of those real life cop series where they stopped a young chap for a motoring offence (more than one young person in a car, you know what I mean) but also picked up his illegal reg plates, with a fancy font. They said this is the second time we have told you to remove them so now go and remove them. Yes officer but you could see the guy was not going to do it.

I had plates made up before, for my Ibiza, as I'd imported it and it didn't have any :) Ordered them online, with the GB/EU symbol on.

The required legal bits were in very small lettering at the bottom, very little contrast with the plate colour. You could hardly see them unless close and specifically looking for them.

I stuck them on with adhesive pads too, rather than drilling holes through the plate and having screws & caps. I expect some will question the point of that, but I liked the "cleaner" look :)

One point to note - if the bumper is slightly curved, and you're using pads - clean & dry everything scrupulously first, and use plenty of pads...

I do prefer the clean look of pads but I have had them fall off in very hot weather ....these days I just accept the dealers choice...bigger thinks to worry about

These are the plates the dealer fitted:

I binned their plastic mounts and replaced them with these from ebay - as you can see they also cover up the dealer's logo on the actual plate itself:

That would irritate the hell out of me, having 2 different colours for the number plate bolts...

^ ^  3yrs time might be an MOT fail

Picky I realise, but had a verbal comment about plates on a 57 plate car!

Although not  a requirement, you should try and avoid a black bolt on the yellow background or a yellow bolt in the middle of a letter as they confuse ANPR cameras and could lead to you being stopped. This is why the rear plate on my Audi is held on by sticky pads, the front is drilled but the placing of the holes is such that the colours are the same.

Another irritation is the number of dealers who do not use the factory fitted threaded holes (if you have them on the F/L)  but just drill through then use a self tapper, surely in this day and age its not expecting too much for dealers to have a template for the job.

I assume the name below the reg should be the manufacturer of the plate and not the vehicle. Who after 5 years or more is going to ask a dealer to make up a damaged plate.

I tend to agree I don't like number plates with with decoration boarders and big logo along the bottom, the dealer sticker in the rear window comes off mainly because it's stuck over the heat elements and top centre of the rear screen can be seen in the rear view mirror. My dealers number plate are quite plain with just their website along the bottom.umesaveh.jpg

That's exactly why I had my dealer affix my plates with pads, instead of screws. Those will be coming off shortly anyway, when my private plate gets transferred.

Correct.
