Got my new Yeti Butttt

Featured Replies

Right I now have a Yeti TSI elegence DSG.

Now I have two problems, the first is the speedo dials, i really dont like them, with me having a hint of dyslexia, its kinda hard to judge the speed propperly.

On some Yeti videos, I have seen the screen in the middle of the dials showing a large rolling digital speedo (in mph), a bit like what the new golfs can do.

Why isnt this on mine?

And finally, the 12v sockets, these are always on even when the cars locked and off.

Can this be changed?

I have two dash cams that have prior to me getting this car, come on and off as the engine starts using the 12v sockets on my old golf.

Oh and in regards to the speedo, yes i have a sat nav, but its not ideal for checking the speed.

The speedo thing can be done, but it requires you to find somebody with VCDS which can connect to your car via the OBD connector and make various adjustments (if you search the site you'll discover more). It requires telling your car it is Australian, or Restofworldian.

The cigarette lighter thing.... dunno. I thought they deactivated after 15 minutes but I think I have been proven wrong on that.

I've not done mine yet, but apparently you get the big speedo by persuading the car that it's an Aussie Yeti. A quick search should find it for you

I don't think the sockets are switchable in afraid.

Are these VCDS kits expensive?

I think there are a number of options re the cameras. Search posts by Rockhopper and BossFox. Lots of advice and help contained in their posts.

I agree, or at least did agree, re the speedo markings. I'm now used to the graduations but I do use the kph display sometimes which easily translates 50 KPH to 30 MPH etc.No vcds needed for this.

So if i modify the car to be an aussie one, will that impact on anything, or will it just add to it, does it void the warrenty/service?

I have front and rear cameras plugged into a Maplin 2 x 12volt and 1 x USB switchable extension socket which is then plugged into the Yeti's 'always live' front socket. There have been numerous occasions when I have forgotten to switch them off overnight but fortunately without any ill effects. They have not drained the battery and the diesel engine springs into life even on cold winter mornings.

I rather favour the 12v socket being always live as it means that the cameras can be left on when parked in areas which I would rather not park in.

VCDS is approx £260

You would be better contacting someone in the link in signature to code it for you.

I wouldnt mind buying a VCDS kit if i can get a little return for some favours for some pals.

Which one would i need to buy to make changes to my skoda? Would it void the warrenty?

I must be a bit old fashioned as I have a TomTom GPS and I use the speed readout from it as I too found the analogue speedo too small and poorly graduated for 50/70/90 combined with significant errors. I keep overtaking others at the 'can get away with it' speed :-))

I tend to use the MFD to see how far to empty/instant consumption rate......I've only done 8,000 odd kms so far.

I didn't know euro Yetis weren't programmed to display digital speed, without GPS that'd be a significant negative to me.

It's a smashing car, without a doubt. But these 2 issues are kinds of serious. I don't want to be glued to my speedo.

I've looked at other posts regarding the sockets but can't find a definitive answer, should I just buy a piggy back fuse folder and attach a 12v socket and put it in the fuse box?

What else can I enable with vcds while I'm at it?

I am only going to say one thing, if you have never used VCDS yourself and you are wanting to make changes to settings be VERY careful. With VCDS you can turn a perfectly fine functioning car into one that will not start, make weird things happen etc.. VCDS is a great tool once you understand it, but it has the capability to turn your car into a non running doorstop.

If this is the case then presumingly VCDS would have some form of backup car config and restore defaults option?

The thread below will give you an idea of what features can be activated or changed with VCDS, depending on model and specification.

No. But a golden rule when making changes with VCDS is to carry out an auto-scan first and to save the results so that the original coding is available to reinstate.

You can, it's what I've done and it's simple. (front cam)  If you leave the 12v ciggy plug on it's a little bit of a tight fit.

Rear one can be run off the rear wiper motor as it has an ignition live.

Which fuse? Are there any photos availible? Really eager to go get all this sorted.

Page 236 of your manual will give you a layout of your fuses ( note fuse 1 is bottom left NOT top left as diagram )

If you look here it will give you some tips - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/265346-in-car-cameras/

A pm to any one of the nice people in this thread will hopefully respond to guide you through if it does not make any sense ;)

I will be shortly doing my rear camera & will put a ' How to ' together & see if it can be pinned in the Yeti section to be referred to. ( there are so many scattered posts about this now )

I don't know what they're like on the continent, but in the UK there is a digital kmph reading on the MFD.  Both that and the mph dial speedo are out by varying degrees at different speeds (like every other car on the planet) so I've calibrated mine against a GPS (steady speed, flat, straight stretch of road - on both winter tyres and normal tyres) and keep a small, laminated card with the kmph readings for true speeds in 10mph increments tucked under the strap on the driver's side sun visor.  I quickly come to remember the various kmph numbers after each tyre change.  When driving through ANPR-controlled speed restrictions I use the kmph reading to set my cruise control.

Have a look here.  I used that approach to make the rear 12v socket ignition live, for a device which lived in the boot.  I jumpered the piggyback feed from fuse 6 in to the outlet side of fuse socket 26 (having verified which side of the socket was which with a multimeter first).  The device I was powering from the 12v socket only drew a few milliamps so Great Yeti's idea of using a 2A mini circuit breaker on the piggyback feed was more than adequate.

For a device to be mounted in the rear window, BossFox' suggestion of taking an ignition live feed from the rear wiper motor is obviously a better solution.

Useful to know if I ever decide to fit a rear camera, thanks.

Spookily, I was going to ask if there was an ignition switched live at the rear today, for wiring a rear camera ! Thanks!

From the French Yeti I looked at, the display is exactly the same as the British model.

The dash display unit (speedo, MFD, rev counter) is a common VAG fitment and is certainly the same as in the Tiguan we were loaned whilst my car was being repaired, and was also in our French friends Tiguan.

If I were you I wouldnt dare mess about with the electrics so not to void warranty.

Are you talking about fitting a drive recorder and plugging it into the fusebox?

Really?
