How to setup voice control - mine ain't working

Recommended Posts

Car is brand new and I see the "voice" buttons on the Bolero and also on the steering wheel so thought would have a play.

Following the manual, I first press the button on the Bolero. This flashes up an icon which is like a speaker with a red line half through it. Next you're told to press the steering wheel button - this does nothing at all.

Am I doing something wrong or could it be faulty - or set to Gaelic :notme:

I just press the steering wheel button and talk.  The car then says 'dialing so and so' regardless of what I asked for  :D

Isnt it meant to do that? :)

Im yet to use a voice system that works properly, every single time I end up shouting at it "NO! dont do that!"

Once tried "call home" and it starting ringing a colleague who was in Australia at the time!  Can't remember which car it was in

I thought that in Ireland Voice Control was a chargeable option - you could spec BT+ or BT+ with voice control as additional options.

In the UK voice control is standard regardless, you don't need to add BT+. Confusing or what!

Agreed. I tried using it for a few weeks but found it a dumb and hateful system..as are most from what I've seen.

It's a nice idea if they master it and to be fair, coming from the midlands not many people understand me, let alone machines.

all voice control systems are rank waste of time IMHO

The XBox One voice control is decent, as is Google's voice control.

Voice controlled lifts however, are not a great idea:

In OZ voice control is an option, my Elegance with Columbus has it and it's not worth a pinch of salt. My wife's Ambition spec with Bolero doesn't have it, but still has the voice button on the steering wheel. All the button does is mute the system. It's a AU$50 option and i wouldn't waste the money. At that price i would guess it would be able to be activated through VAGCOM, but i still wouldn't waste time finding out.

I've a nexus phone and find Google voice recognition stuff fairly good. It works well for me so long as there is little background noise, but when driving... Ie when in my old Mondeo it would have been really good to just say 'OK Google, call so and so', the background noise was enough to make it struggle much more. It is nearly there though.   However the octy seems to struggle even when in a silent stationary car.  'Station Heart' doesn't retune the radio, it always results in 'dialing so and so'.... More work needed. Or rather, wait until Google/Sony and the information specialists have voice s/w working well, then licence it from them.

For now Skoda should save their money and give us something that works effectively as standard instead.  In fact, take the signs generator off too and save a bit more..... Then fit front assist as standard please and maybe ACC.

  • 2 years later...

My Octavia 2015 version (1.2 TSI) has similar failures with voice control. I have ONCE successfully called the correct number and after around 20 attempts have given up on it. I even managed to call Home with the result that it rang a former colleague in Holland (I haven't lived in Holland for over 30 years). Basically it doesn't work.

I only use it for 2 things:

SHOUTING: "Navigate to Home", every day after work

SHOUTING: "Navigate to Work", every morning.

(home and work setup as favourite places)

Radio station is as hopeless as trying to get it to dial the correct person. You can forget about address capture via voice.

One thing I wish it can do, is to be able to turn pages on the screen. I like to flick between the 3 car fuel usage pages to compare my current drive and since refuelling / all time usage.

You simply dont have voice control activated, all the buttons do is mute the sound as others have written.

It is not simply activated by VCDS, I tried and it does not work.

I am mostly annnoyed by the fact that a rather expensive cars comes with two buttons for a feature that is not installed. I have three buttons for muting sound ☺

But maybe it does not matter much, cause everybody says Skodas voice control works really bad. I had a Hyundai i10 with voice control in Danish, and it worked perfectly. Amazing it can not work in a much more expensive car.

Im glad it's not just me who finds the voice control as useful a chocolate fireguard. My diction may not be perfect, but I'm from the Home Counties and it still won't understand a word I say. Does it work with a Czech dialect?

It's useless.

"Dial mum"

'Dialing office...'

"Cancel cancel, hangup <presses button on wiper stalk to hangup>

Dial mum"

'Dialing Marc'

....

In the end I gave up, pulled over and selected it manually.

Maybe if you speak in South-East England-ish or received pronunciation it might work, but anywhere North or West of Bristol it's probably useless.

WallMeerkat I can confirm that it's totally useless in South-East England too.  Mind you, its randomness makes it good for keeping in contact with people you haven't called for years! :)
