  • I always use either a mf drying towel or autogl aqua wax with a few microfibre cloths. Chamois leathers I find are a big no no due to the fact that if there's any fine dirt or grit on the car, you'r

Needless to say...I don't recommend the Metro Vac @ £199 as the Pet Blaster is the identical product rebranded

Sorry to go a little off topic, has anyone seen these at B&Q, got one a bit back from JTF, they seem OK but just wanted all of your professional opinions?

Seem a good option for the detailer on a budget.

I have a number of these that I use. As far as absorption is concerned the wooly mamouth holds far more water, but I find these are good to finish off once you've got most off with the WM and are good for getting into awkward places like door shuts and under the boot/bonnet. I used them before I had the WM, 2 to do the outside, one for the shuts and boot and one under the bonnet. They don't absorb water as well as the thicker WM but are better than wafflecloths. I find its easier to finish off with a dry mf towel rather than wring tne one out your using. On clean you car there's both the wm and a purple one thats similar but loads cheaper. If you look in this section theres a discount for cyc too which makes it even cheaper.

Thanks for that, good to hear you have tried them. The WM must be bloody thick as I thought that one was pretty thick!

Shall add one to my cyc wishlist

It is. I can do the whole of the outside with the wm without wringing it out. Hold it by 2 corners and pull it across the surfaces and the water just gets soaked up It still leaves some behind, but then a wipe round with the kent finishes things off nicely. I don't touch the windows until I've done the rest of the car with the woolly first but using a wooly only takes litterally just a few minutes to get the car outside almost fully dry. Can't wait to try my doggy drier to see how much that speeds up. The times the wm comes in handy is when its hot so you can quickly dry off before the water marks start and again when its cold as you don't have to keep wringing it out. It might not seem important but having good towels really cuts down the cleaning time

Aw you know Chris there's always some people that will look down their noses at other peoples ideas and have to criticize their opinions.! It;s just human nature i suppose.

I used a micro fibre towel for months but could never resist wiping the car with it. (you are supposed to place it on, dab and lift)

consequently the first realy sunny day this year I could see thousands of tiny scratches (swirl marks).

I have now invested in a reverse osmosis water purifier which means I never have to dry the car, it dries leaving no water marks anywhere.

Massive time saver especially in summer when if it has not rained I can just jet wash the car (no shampoo) and go.

Drying towel used correctly and some QD is a lot cheaper than an R.O unit.

But hey if you got the cash why not..

It wont be the drying towel that caused the scratches/swirls

More likely to be the wash technique

Wiping a WM across the paint to dry it does not inflict any damage at all

Those that pat dry using one are totally anal and are wasting their time IMO

....and if you have THAT much cash, move house to an area with a very soft water supply. Exeter way, North Wales, Scottish Highlands...or am I taking this thread too seriously?

No...You just misunderstand how swirls are inflicted...Soft or Hard water areas

Most of the time they are due to poor washing and poor products

With the correct techniques and the right products you will not inflict as much damage

.......you can never be 100% ...but 90% is achievable with care and knowledge

I strongly recommend people try out rain water collected in a water butt - ideally for the entire wash but at least for a final rinse from a watering can etc. Its soft water so doesnt spot and I've even washed black cars in hot midday sun with no issues. Makes drying far far easier than tap water - and done with common sense there is zero risk using that water as long as your water butt isnt deep in crud and you dont use water from the bottom with sediment in it.

I made the mistake of quickly filling a bucket with tap water today for a quick car wash between showers and couldnt believe that even on an overcast miserbale morning like today I got terrible water spotting, even using ONR with softeners in it :(  Wont make that mistake again and the bonus is of course that its free - bonus if you're on a water meter!

Give it a try.

Chris, I hope that answer wasn't meant for me....I am completely clued up about proper washing! My comments about moving house to a soft water area were meant to (jokingly) address the problem of water spotting....after all, if you install a reverse osmosis unit to improve your water quality, moving house to a soft water area could be the next logical step.

It was for you. Yes oxonboxn

Thanks for the clarification of you being clued up...perhaps others will read what I posted and take note

That much cash?? it was only @£100 and having looked into the units that you can attach to a hose and other options it was massively more cost effective.

Plus I have pure drinking water if I want it and I can also clean the house windows with the same ease.

Working out what my time is worth I wouldn't go back.

May be worth pointing out that the water in south Gloucestershire is very hard, in fact on moving here years ago we couldn't understand why soap didn't work anymore and you could even sense resistance getting into a bath. lol
