2006 VW Jetta 1.9TDI - Limp home mode turbo over boost fault.

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I have a 2006 VW Jetta 1.9TDI PD, Engine code BKC and a few months ago it went into limp mode for the first time, struggled to get over 40mph with foot buried in carpet, a quick scan with generic OBD scanner showed fault code for turbo overboost, I reset the code and car was back to normal again for a few hundred miles. However the issue reoccurred again this week, power loss was not as bad as the first time but certainly noticeable with lack of power uphill and under load, a quick scan confirmed that the fault had returned. So this time I have done a bit of research and seems this is a common issue and is caused by carbon and soot build up in the turbo blocking vanes and stiffening the actuator. I have read on this forum and other across the net that the carbon build up can be cleaned out with Mr Muscle Oven cleaner. I am wondering can this be done on my car and if so how?

All your suggestions and feedback are very much appreciated, thanks for the help!

Regards.

Thanks radders567, So basically I need to take off the erg pipe which is secured with 2 allen bolts, then insert the pipe for mr muscle down into the turbo and spray the cleaner in there?

First thing you can try before invasive cleaning is to exercise the VNT mechanism.

Find it first, get your finger(s) on the end of the VNT actuator and move it up and down, it should move about 1" and will probably be very stiff.

By moving it through it's full operating range quite a few times it should free it up for quite some time.

If it hardly moves or is extreamly hard to move then the only option is internal cleaning.

Also have a check for a leaky/split vacuum pipe going to the actuator while youre at it.
