1.4 tsi Octavia (2014) strange engine sound or not ?

Featured Replies

Hi to all. I have Octavia 1.4 tsi (two week old). After just 200km strange noise become out from engine at cold start and i contacted my dealer which said that is normal. Then I contacted costumer care and they said that they have compared with the car with same engine and that the noise is even bigger. I would like to hear somebody who know or have the same engine is that normal sound. I have posted link on youtube with sound of my engine (at the end of post). Please help if anybody know better. I am from Bosnia and here is very little number tsi engines (i don't know anybody with tsi engine).

Youtube link :

Have you checked the oil? Sounds like its dry! Definitely not a normal sound.

EDIT: could be some sort of metal clip has come loose, and is vibrating on the engine/exhaust. That's a horrible metal vibration sound. A TSI engine normally does not sound like that.

Yes I have checked oil and i have been to the dealer and they checked too. This sound is from cold start but when engine warms up it disapeares (alomst all. I still hear a a little vibrations) so it must be something with engine or turbine.

I'd be taking it to a different dealer....it sounds like a sewing machine :(

tbh it sounds like the top end isnt getting any oil

I don't want to be controversial but that noise is fairly typical of most 1.4TSI's I have ever heard (including mine) when cold. It becomes quieter after a few minutes.

I think it sounds worse than it is on the You Tube clip as the noise echoes off the underside of the bonnet (which has no sound deadening) when recording the video.

This is a recording of a brand new off the forecourt Skoda 1.4 TSI for comparison.

If you think you have a problem why don't you go back to the dealer and ask them to start up a 1.4 TSI so you can compare?

Thank you for reply a lot. You make my day little better. Your engine sounds little different but it is similar noise. Now I am confused because my dealer said all is ok and they copared wit some other engine sound. I have send this video to my sister in Slovenia and there they said that my sound is not ok, She went to two dealers and both said that it isn't ok. I will go to that dealer (500 km) just to make sure. I am mad this days. I think Škoda should warn potencial buyers on that soud. Otherwise engine is great good consumption and it is elastic.

So if its not "normal" what does the dealer say is actually wrong with the engine?

Let us know how you get on. I would ask the dealer if you could to listen to another Tsi yourself when you visit. That way you dont have to rely on what the dealer says second hand.

Check the clip on the turbo's actuator.

That dealers form Slovenia said the timing belt is wrong but he was just watching my video and I haven't speak with them (my sister was). My dealer in Bosnia played me sound of another engine and it sounds just like yours. My have little higher sound and especialy when I am throtling it at the end of my clip and in Slovenia they made attention on that part. I will get to the Slovenia next week and I will inform you how  was this finished

And this might sound like a silly question but semi related to noise, but on the Mk2 octavia, you could buy the under bonnet sound deadner as a spare and install it which made some difference to engine noise. Any idea if that is available for the occy 3?

The answer is yes as I believe its standard on diesel models. Theres a thread on this subject elsewhere on this forum if you do a search on sound deadening.

I wouldn't be happy with an engine which sounds like a sewing machine at idle and would want the source of that sound investigating for peace of mind.

The part number for the 'sound absorber for engine lid' mentioned immediately above is 5E0 863 831.

Hi! The sound is typical and it comes actually from the direct injection. Don't worry, be happy!

Champions! Thanks for that, will make sure I order one for the new car when it turns up. Every little bit to make it as quiet as possible.

EDIT: and I think the above poster has it right - it's the direct injection making the noise.....(after much googling!)

Direct injection test:

Direct injection

Thanks for that link cris. What a racket!

Pgornrs - have you visited the dealer yet?

Injectors can be really noisy. I remember even getting worried about my last bike which was a triumph and my first fuel injected bike. Made a bit of a racket at idle but when I was at the dealers they all did lol.

Yes I have. They din't find anything wrong too. They said that there is little difference with normal sound but nothing significant. They wanted to investigate to the end but that would take much time. I am more relaxed now and if there is something wrong it would shown after this 1000 km of highway. The engine behavior is realy great. Consuption is 6.2 l at 140km/h with air condition on. Thanks again to all for posts. I think that Škoda should warn potencial customers on that sound.

Glad you got the answer you wanted and that nothing major seems wrong. Happy Skodaring!!

I'd know that noise anywhere.  That sounds just like a 1930's Morris 8.  I'm glad my 2.0 TSI doesn't sound like that......
