Dont forget to clean your Green Filters!!

Featured Replies

This is the third time i've done it in 15k and I can only describe the filter as shocking this time. Not one green bit left in sight.

Soot, dead bugs (spiders, flys etc), and just general grime.

Had to use the cleaning application twice on it to get it looking anything like new.

Anyone who hasnt done this in a while I certainly recommend you should!

** Think the Cupra Intake may of made it worse as it's sucking more through **

Where do I get the cleaning fluid? Wont need it for a while mind you. I only fitted it today. Cant really say I've noticed any difference in performance. What difference has it made to you?

Did mine yesterday, noticed the difference straight away. You can get the kits off ebay but the cheapest ive found was at halfrauds for

I got mine from Demontweeks, next day delivery and excellent customer service.

You need the cleaner then the re-applicator.

Brake & clutch cleaning fluid! best (cheapest) cleaning fluid! Mild enough to not to any damage but it does the job - the amount of black "gunk" in the tray I was using to hold the fluid while I was busy with the brush was shocking!

Got myself a brand spanking clean green filter now though. ;) Its something I consider doing every 5000 miles. It'll pay for itself pretty soon - I think I've done around 50k with it on - that would be 2 or 3 new air filters, and without the added performance too. :)

Interesting. I had a K&N panel in my VW Bora which did 40k without needing a clean. I cracked open the airbox to remove spiders and bits of tree every so often but the filter was still pink for 35k+. Maybe the air was just cleaner in Scotland?

Im sure the cleaner fluid was just washing up liquid... which is what i use to clean mine :D

I've used K&N's, Jetex's etc... for many years and have always cleaned them in a fairly strong washing-up liquid solution with warm water. Carefully rinsed in standing water (water flow could damage the fibre structure) and allowed to air dry before re-oiling, has always produced good results for me.

I have the Green cleaning kit but last time I cleaned ours it didn't really do the job so I used some Oxy Clean stuff, that really works well!!

I used the green cleaning kit too, but the cleaning kit doesn't last as long as the oil. :D The oil must still be full (NOT supposed to over spray on each clean as we all should know ;) but the cleaner only lasted 2 cleans! :(

Still, at least I got a nice cheap replacement. Nice to know Fairy does the job too. :D

Yep I forget mine until the RR day down south, it was as dirty as a dirty thing in a dirty place  I dont think I should still be up!

Anyway the cleaning stuff done the job though it took two goes.

Yep the Green's do get very dirty very quickly, which makes me wonder if they're actually any better than the paper filters they replace as the dirt is going to quickly inhibit the air flow.

I'm running a K&N in the Mondeo (cos it was

I have noticed a drop off in performance when the filter is dirty. Around every 5k or so. I live in Bristol and do a fair amount of motorway miles, so I guess the filter gets bunged up fairly frequently.

Always a jump in performance after cleaning.

Promts me to check the fluid levels, tyre pressures, hoover!

I give the filter a few bangs on the floor, then a quick flick with a soft brush, then use fairy and that pink oxy stuff, then rinse.

My Green filter was cleaned as part of my 20k service (been on since almost day one) - it was so filthy! So now it's getting done every 5k, along with the oil and oil filter.

Thats the beauty of K&N - had one on all of my cars, never had to clean one yet

I've noticed an increase in soot and a distinct drop in MPG over the last few weeks, 8k on the clock and the green filter has been in for 7k of this and hasn't been cleaned yet, think that'll be a job to do tomorrow....

Crikey! The damn thing wasn't green anymore! Well, most of it was black and most of the folds were full of dead bugs and leaf matter, no wonder my car was sooting like a chimney! Hopefully that'll be the end of that, but note to self - clean more regularly than every 7k! :D

Saw this thread & then checked the filter.

It was filthy!! Even had a feather in it!

I've done 8K miles since I put it in so I gave it a good clean up.

After the clean, I've noticed the induction noise is a bit louder, more than I remember when I first put it in.

BTW, got my clening kit (cleaning solution & oil) from Halfords (Ripspeed store) for

 at finding a feather.

Maybe we should start a 'what i found in my green filter' thread ;)

I'll be cleaning mine at the weekend.

I'm wondering where the rest of the bird went!!!! :D

Have noticed a bit more responsivness after cleaning filter.

I found about 100 flies, wasps and other blackened creepy crawlies. I also had enough soot and crap in there to use an entire can of carb cleaner getting rid of it!

As for re-oiling, I got a K&N re-oiling kit for

Dirty, dirty thing!

Mine was in a similar state to yours when I cleaned mine today, can't believe how filthy they get!!

And the standard one should only be changed at 40,000 mile service

Mine was like that piccie, but without the feather, and with NO fresh looking green patches either. It was all grey/black

Soon had it looking really nice though.
